Except that one.  I use free versions of every other piece of software on my machine here at work and home, but Gimp vs Photoshop is no contest.  Mind you compaired to PS versions of many years past it's just fine, but doesn't even come close to holding it's own by current versions.  I would equate current Gimp to Photoshop 3 or 4, with the current version being 10.

A few more for the list, two I use daily.

worth while links. based on the first link, i gave comodo firewall another look (i had an earlier version that was a resource hog) and i'm quite happy with it, and thank god i have officially been able to remove zonealarm from every aspect of my life now . they also recommended spyware terminator which seems to be a very good free spyware program so far. most other free ones don't run in an active mode to intercept, but only remove if scanned. there is a small resource hit running it but it's not near as bad as i thought it would be.

    anyway thanks for the linkage

I added the file transfers and email programs along with another antivirus

I know gimp isnt that good but its free so just in case someone cant afford to buy or doesnt want to buy the complete version of photoshop gimp is always there .   I also found another free image editiing program that might be better then gimp if you want to try it out, pretty good and looks almost the same as photoshop as far as tool placement goes, i like it ... but imo no one will ever beat  photoshop its just too good

VideoLAN is one of the best players I've seen.

Anyone have any recommended alternatives to Microsoft Visual C++?

I've downloaded it and I am working on getting it set up, but I think that combined with MinGW might fit the bill. It looks like Code::Blocks is a general IDE for many different compilers which is pretty cool.

    Thanks!

    3D Modeling-

GMAX-a free Lite version of 3ds studio max. Has the same basic functions as max but doesn't do the high-level functions. Good learner tool.

Blender-www.blender.org is an open source 3d modeling software that has the same functions as max or maya but has an extreme learning curve if you have never modeled before. For importing models to games this also has a built in collada exporter tool.
