I hate LOTRO - FAQ

RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599
This one is for all the LOTRO haters , because we LOTRO fans love you - and belive you are hundred percent entitled to your oppinion!!!

If you hate LOTRO but are not sure how much you hate it, you are welcome to free for all open beta test ...

And just because i know how much you have to express your feelings - here is a short FAQ to LOTRO flaws

  1. LOTRO uses the same engine as DDO

      - Shame Turbine for recycling perfectly functional 3d rendering engine

  2. LOTRO leveling is to slow

    - Oh what a shame ! You need to jump at least 100 exp levels for single kill !

  3. LOTRO quests are boring

    - Just as boring as quests in any other MMO ever. You are right, it is time for a change. And i advice you not to play any

MMO until the one with interesting quests comes out ! See you in 20 years..
  4. LOTRO combat is boring

    - Again you are right. To bad it could not be more like CSS or God of War. Again , i advice you to wait for MMO with interesting

    combat...see you in 25 years
  5. LOTRO has to less character customisation

-Righto , almost as less as every other MMO
  6. LOTRO has boring classes

    -Yup ... very borin indeed

Seriously now. I had to edit the original post because people were understanding it all wrong. I was bit ironical , but what i want to say is simple:

If you are looking for the MMO to kill all  MMO's , you are looking at the wrong place.

And if you are hating LOTRO for not being that perfect MMO you are wasting your time. Just move on to anticipating WAR or AOC.

Not every game should reinvent the weel , and LOTRO is not trying to do that. Turbine made attempt on making very polished , fun game ( leaning toward casual ) - and they succeded at that. It is not a passion fruit , it is a simple apple. But tasty apple.

I made this FAQ to show that all (well most) criticism haters have toward this game are valid. But it doesnt change the fact LOTRO is very fun and enjoyable game.

At least for me that is a valid reason for playing it

I actually like LOTRO.  However, I really hate it when people say it's okay for one game to suck because that's how all the other games are.  That line of logic somehow makes it okay for developers to not be creative and think outside the box.  The guys over in the Vanguard forums are famous for this.  You try to discuss Vanguard and within the next 5 posts, the conversation moves to WoW.

They could have done a better job with customization, and I hope they do before release.  There are MMOs out today that blow the socks off of LOTRO in this department (CoH for example).  I like most of the animations as they are, but I wish they'd revisit the running animation.  It seems as if the characters are kicking the backs of their thighs when they run.

Anywho, it is a nice game.  Still, there's nothing wrong with pointing out its flaws.  In fact, I hope the devs read the critical posts, and then make changes that will make the game even better.

I see the release as page 1 in a book that has several chapters beeing handed to us in time.

    Not perfect yet,but very playable.

In time with updates and expansions it could become a bright star on the sky.

Can't wait for the Update/Expansion where they release Moria.

The game looks great...but there are two things that I noticed that really bug me:

    1. Eriador ONLY!!! What happened to Middle-Earth dude, like c'mon you said you are gonna give us LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE!!! that revolves around the movie trilogy which in fact for those who haven't seen it (sad...if you haven't) about a fellowship travelling from The Shire to Mt. Doom in Mordor. But what Turbine gave is barely a fraction of Middle-Earth, I understand there might be expansions but its just too slack.

    2. Ummm...who are the allies fighting against? Don't tell me its just NPC Uruk-kai, Goblins, Trolls, Orcs!!! Also I was hoping that players can ACTUALLY become the baddies and thus we would have the good guys vs. the bad guys.

The game is very interesting to explore and emerge yourself into, but if we had just these two things we would have the real LOTRO! With Epic battles, City Sieges, Territorial Controls and more!

Sorry for my rant, but I would honestly like these things in LOTRO. Other then these problems LOTRO is definitely a great game!

    Hmmmm.....bear with my mood here......

This one is for all the BROCCOLI haters, because we BROCCOLI lovers hate  to love you- and  you are one hundred percent entitled to your opinion!!!

If you hate BROCCOLI but are not sure how much you hate it, you are welcome to free for all open taste test...

And just because i know how much you have to express your feelings - here is a short FAQ to BROCCOLI flaws

    1.  Broccoli is Green

-Well thats sort of speaks for itself.  I personally don't care for green chit.  Lettuce is "ok"....green beans....eh.  Typically though if it's green, keep it off my pizza, keep it out of my casserol, don't even put it in the fridge.

    2.  BROCCOLI has those nasty little pieces that get in between your teeth and stick out like a whore in church.

-That also speaks for itself.  Nothing a good brushing wouldn't take care of, but, I'm just not in the habit of carrying around a toothbrush and toothpaste.  Perhaps, if someone integrated a toothbush into a cellphone, I always seem to have that with me.

    3.  BROCCOLI tastes nasty

-BROCCOLI tastes nasty......... it seems you can mix it with other things, like cheese or quikrete but that nasty broccoli taste will always dominate the other ingredients.

    4.  see #3

And as this FAQ plainly shows, BROCCOLI sucks.  It almost sucks as bad as other green vegtables in existence.

Or should i say - BROCCOLI is just a bit better than other vegtables in the marketplace.

For some this will not be enough to eat it.  Fair enough

    and others

My appolagies for hijacking your post Rattrap, just something i had to get off my chest.  The selfish me does feel better.

    Carry on......

    LOL - right on mate

Except for being compared to nasty Broccoli - LOTRO has many flaws , and being not very original or bringing any innovation is

    i belive most dominant.

So what i am not so ironically saying is : the haters have the point to their claims.

They want a better MMO. And we all want better MMOs...

LOTRO is simply another MMO that accidentaly happens to be more polished , better looking

and  more interesting than the lot we seen in last 3 years. This alone is enough for me to buy it, and play it.

    Well thats it

I do have to admit it is a mighty purdy package.....

Can I just copy your post and change it for WAR?

I try MMOs and if I like them I play them, if I don't like them I say why without comparing it to X or Y.

I think people picked up the preorder of LOTRO just to bash it and say how much better WoW or Vangaurd or EQ2 or CoX is.

Hmmm, no originality........let's ponder this for a minute.

Has anyone noticed the music system ingame yet, I have never seen a game so detailed as to be able to actually play music instruments ingame and actually play songs. Check out Dust in the Wind videos and others made by players if you don't know what I speak of.  Albeit, many people don't know how to play a single note of music, but that is one thing of note.  Something else original is the use of questing xp overshadowing mob xp as a means to stop powerleveling to a degree.  Turbine is working to curb exploits and powerlevelling in the game and it's one of the first I have ever seen actually try this in the industry from the beginning (others just go through the motions but not actually do anything about it).

The professions system is fairly uncommon in the way they handle it,  giving you 3 professions for each vocation.  Also, the way classes are handled is not quite the industry standard and brings a refreshing choice as what class to play. Who would have thought the mage type class to be the pet class, or that the warrior type Champion class to be an aoe class.  They may not be original or unique ideas, but Turbine has updated and changed many of the standard ideas enough to make them refreshing and new to the MMO scene.  Also, Turbine has the best record in the business of putting out new updated content.  They set the standard of monthly content back in AC1 and now most people expect new content at regular intervals due to their diligence in this regard.

All the haters say LOTRO is nothing new, but fail to see what the game is really about and what it does to the genre.  It may not bring some brand new technology or idea out, but it sure does make alot of the tired old ideas shine in a whole new light. And NO, I am not a fanboi because I had my doubts, but after playing in beta now I see the game in a new light and what it does overall.  The World Tour Open Beta will open alot of people's eyes to the fact that LOTRO is a good game and not just a WOW/EQ/DAoC copy.

    7. Scripted and linear gameplay, no sense of freedom, e.g. beginning quests, instanced pubs????

    10. Small world size

    11. Bad animations

    7. Scripted yes, but by the time you get out of the newb area you know how to play the game, unlike EVERY other tutorial I have played since online gaming going back to MUDs.  Also, just because alot of it is instanced don't mean thats bad. Instancing while you may not like it is necessary in alot of ways to help alleviate server stress.

    8. It's LORD OF THE RINGS, what did you want, to be able to be an elf and kill your allies.  Also, try out monster play you will like it very much......

    9. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, not every game has housing and boats, infact very few do today. And without items to display in your house what do you need with one.

    10. All I have to say is LOL, if you think its a small world your absolutely crazy.  Just because they give us just a part of the whole world at launch don't mean thats all we get.  Turbine already has the first major update in the works and I bet it adds more land areas for us to explore and all for FREE as they usually do with new content.  Also, if you can explore ALL the area that we have so far and find everything out there then you have been playing nonstop and need to get out of the game.

    11. & 12. Uhmm, what system do you have to say that the animations and graphics are boring and bad.  The graphics are inline with ALL depections of Tolkien's world and I think they look great.

All in all, haters need to play the game and STFU, or go back to your Vanguard since its already released and not even 50% as ready as LOTRO is while still in beta.

I don't get worked up much, but I am tired of the anti-LOTRO people who want to bash it just because they have to bash and down any new game coming out.

#7. After level 6 you can pretty much go anywhere you want and do anything you want. Don't like bree land hop a horse for 1 sp to Thurins hall, the shire, or the elven lands and start any of the quests there. Nothing Linear there at least not anymore so then any other MMORPG.

#8 No real PVP? What do you consider Real PVP? To me the monster system is just as much real PVP as there is in WOW or DAoC. Played a Warg the other day the monster lands are pretty cool and you have plenty of quests to wipe out hobbits etc. True at this time there aren't any level 50 good characters running around but in a few months it will rock, in the mean time one can level ones monster's powers. Since there are alot of rare resources in the monster lands there is alot of reasons for good players to journey there. The best thing about monster play is everyone will be pretty much the same level so it will be easier to balance no being ganked by a player 20 or 30 levels higher (sorry to those that find that a fun and interesting challenge :) )

#9 No house or boats. Ok you got that but who really plays a MMORPG to sail a boat , or stand around in their house? Yes they are kinda nice eye candy but basically Fluff to me as I don't care if the fighter I'm grouped with has a 15 plat house or a yatch, I'm kinda silly and just care if he can fight well in a group.

#10 Small world size? The world has room to grow. Better a well made small world to start that expands then a buggy large content lacking (empty) world IMO.

#11 Bad animation? Hehe try VG were the NPC's walk around backward. Seriously I haven't seen any animations worse then most of the MMORPG's currently out (DAoC, EQ2 etc) I'd have to say bad animations compared to what?

#12 Diving? Well kinda like boats I don't really want to spend most of my playing time underwater. WoW, DDO, and EQ let you dive underwater but other then to kill such and such mob, or see how long you can hold your breath I don't see it as a big selling point. Basically once again I'd have to ask bad graphics compared to what. Seems better then VG's which really can't be played at high settings anyway unless you have a cutting edge computer, Better then WOW, DDO's, EQ2 in EoF may have it beat but alot depends on ones taste.

      Cheers

nice trash talkin, crap startin topic.  if all you gonna do is complain your just better off not even sayin anything.  otherwise people are gonna get pissed off.  some people like this game some dont.  everyones different get over it.
  • Count me as a hater. It seemed lifeless, like enemies where hanging around just so you could go kill them instead of feeling like they belong in the world. Animations are boring for combat. Character creation is lacking, especially for Elves. The world feels small. I guess playing elder scrolls where the world feels massive an alive playing something like this after will always make it feel less.

I want to know of an MMO where the MOBs actually go about their daily lives and react logically to an invader.

I imagine there is a MMO where MOBs sound an alarm and get a response from the whole community/pack.

I also imagine a MMO where mobs become extinct due to players killing them so often.

I also imagine a MMO where once you kill a head Evil Person, that he stays dead an the quest giver knows this and never

    gives out the quest again.

I imagine a MMO that is like a single player RPG, where only one person gets to do quests and no one else ever will.

I wonder how long some of these people (not MMORPG.com posters) have been playing multiplayer games?

I've been playing MUDS since the early 90s. You had repops back then, even if it was ever 12 hours.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would ever come to MMORPG.com to try and get a honest picture of any game. Fanboys and trolls . however it is good cheap entertainment while I wait on a DL to finish up.

    I miss DAoC

No housing, no boats, linear quests, no bad guys play, no whole Middle Earth?

GOD ALMIGHTY: WHAT DID YOU EXPECT???? Ever read the FAQ about this game. There are plenty of reasons why this game is how it is and if you expected the war of the ring 5000 players lay siege at helms deep. Congrats, you just qualified for a free slot in your next best psychiatric clinic... It's an MMO after all, not more, and not less... Go wait for Warhammer or Age of Conan or "mighty battles online"... they will still be MMOS...

    cheers

p.s. Oh dude, I just realized you downloaded a friggin beta without knowing ANYTHING about the actual game, that is so stupid it makes me dizzy ^^

I'd hate to see the review Gamespot is going to give, they like to get that fat guy to review games that copy Grand Theft Auto so he could give them bad ratings even though they're actually pretty good and have new features. They'll just get the guy who reviewed WoW to say, "Omg this is totally a WoW copy, lets give it a 7 though."

I find it amusing that the LotRO fanboys get themselves into a frothing frenzy when it's their game in the gun sights, but I didn't see any of them in the VG forums, telling Jackdog, or any of the other LotRO fans to just leave VG people alone. What with all the "Vanguard will go out of business once LotRO comes out", and "Vanguard is shit, LotRO's graphics blow it away", etc, etc, posts in the last month or so, you can't really act surprised that some of the VG fans might just come over here now that it's in open beta for some payback?

And as I recall, the rallying cry of the VG fanboy was "haters need to play the game and STFU, or go back to WoW", or words to that effect. To which the token responce was "Free Speech", or words to that effect.

  • RazperilRazperil Member Posts: 289
People are always going to say bad things about a game. I've come to realise that a lot of the times they do this because the game they bash has things that the game they love does not. I think people get so mad because someone has something nice to say about a game and of course, they don't feel the same way. If we were made to be barbarians, we'd be clubbing one another over these random things. Respect for what another person thinks or feels shows how adult and mature you truly are. No, this isn't preaching or therapy session.. just some common knowledge. Sometimes we forget that even words on here can do damage. We're all human after all.. Why not act the part?

MMO until the one with interesting quests comes out ! See you in 20 years..
    LOTRO combat is boring

    - Again you are right. To bad it could not be more like CSS or God of War. Again , i advice you to wait for MMO with interesting

    combat...see you in 25 years
LOTRO has to less character customisation

-Righto , almost as less as every other MMO
    LOTRO has boring classes

    -Yup ... very borin indeed

And as this FAQ shows plainly LOTRO sucks. It sucks almost as badly as other MMOs in existance.

Or should i say - LOTRO is just a bit better than other MMOs on the market.

For some this will not be enough to play it. Fair enough

    And others

See you in the game mates

    You forgot:

    7. Scripted and linear gameplay, no sense of freedom, e.g. beginning quests, instanced pubs????

    8. No real pvp

    9. No housing, no boats

    10. Small world size

    11. Bad animations

    12. Graphics are boring and bloomy (And everybody who is saying "but the water rocks" then try to dive...I mean seriously....)

7 - I agree. The nazism of shuttling your character along a set line of quests, with mediocre rewards for killing mobs outside of quests, is annoying. Also, the fact that you HAVE to play as a hero of light (Unless you use Monster Play).

8 - I disagree. The Monster Play feature is this - You get level 10. You make a Level 50 Orc/Uruk/Warg/Spider. You massacre heroes with that character. You get to name it, you get to purchase skills with (realm points) destiny points, you get to make money by selling loot, and you get Deeds (Virtues and Titles. I cant recall what they call Virtues when you play as the bad guys)

The PvP in monster play is no different than in DAoC or WoW. You have a character, you kill the other side. The biggest problem is that you cannot leave the Ettinmoors. You have one zone to party in, and that just sucks. (Another is that from what I understand, the PvP is imbalanced in favor of the good guys. Its similar to Everquest being imbalanced towards mobs.)

9 - Housing will most likely be implemented sometime, and if it isnt, that sucks. Boats arent needed. They would be nice, but if you wont see houses, you wont see boats.

10 - The world is as large as Middle Earth is. I cant explain it any more simply than that. The scale has been cut down for whatever god awful reason, but you cant expect them to add 2398743 "underground dungeons" just to expand the scale of the game.

11 - I agree. The animations arent that great.

12 - I agree, the graphics could have been improved. Rumor has it there is a high res pack floating around on the internet, which improved the graphics a bit.

As we all know the only right opinion is your opinion.

I've noticed alot of LOTRO fans can trash talk all they want about other games but refuse to hear criticism about their own. The fact of the matter is LOTRO has been developed as a niche game and isn't meant to appeal to a wide audience. They took a few basic features found in most MMORPGs and extended upon them, while leaving out completely many other features. While some may enjoy it others are just left with a sour taste in their mouth.

While it's a good time killer, for me it lacks immersion. The classes and animations are dull to play and look at, the armor and weapons are not aesthetically pleasing, and the world feels small, linear and lifeless. It's even hard for me to get into the roleplaying aspect because the world isn't open-ended because the plot is fixed and I feel more like I'm just observing a set of events instead of participating. While pvp is not necessary, the lack of it makes the other problem that much bigger because I don't even have a good PvP system to get into.

Again this is my opinion and you can disagree.

Though what I find funny is that people criticize Vanguard for coming out incomplete but defend LOTRO to the death for doing the same thing.

I don't care what anyone says, to me LOTRO is not anymore polished then every other MMORPG at release.

and the clipping issues are worse then WoW and that is saying something.
