Should I buy this game?

Should I buy this game? I have been playing DAOC for 2 years. I recently played the Lineage 2 beta, which sucked. I didn't like EQ. I also didn't like Earth and Beyond.

I voted no, but that is a long-term consideration.

That game will provide you with at least a few months enjoyment, depending on how "hardcore" you play, as they say.

Long term, this game just doesn't have what it takes. But if you've got your eye on a game in development, I might actually change my vote in that case. This game will give you a GREAT couple/few months. The game is still unbalanced, and there isn't talk of that getting fixed in the near future, and there are still plenty of bugs (but not many game-breakers). But its pretty much a given that the average person (even the average person who ends up hating this game) enjoyed it for a good while.

WIth the expansion coming up, you might hit that before you decide to leave, and who knows how many more months of fun that might bring.

Basically, if you are looking for another mmorpg to get into for the next few years, SKIP SWG. They lack the vision to take it the distance.

But if you're lookin for a placeholder to get you to your next "gonna play this one for years" game, I say go for it.

    Someone's gotta do it!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

I think I might have been lucky enough to pick a good server, but galaxies has been good for the long time I've played it (since it started). I've made a ton of friends, love the crafting system, have fun in PvE and PvP (unless fighting against templated characters), and have fun roleplaying too.

The community is great, and more than likely will be very helpful. If you do decide to buy it, come to Mos Eisley on Valcyn. I'm usually around there (though not many others are).

The game isn't perfect, but the bugs aren't too bad, and the greifers and exploiters don't last very long, and the community is friendly (except for a few bad seeds).

    I voted no as well

There are way too many explanations why already in these forums and on the Games List rating section.

Its not worth the money both for the box and monthly fee.

To be honest, I wouldnt even play it for free

I would say it depends on a few factors

1...Do you have a profession in mind and want to hold onto it? If the answer is yes don't buy. I'm a mbh and now left with nothing to do ingame besides sight seeing. Group play is almost non-existant. If you fancy not sticking to one chosen profession and trying different roles you may get some enjoyment from it.

2....Do you like pvp? If yes again do not buy. Pvp within swg is a messy affair.

3...Do you prefer to be a hard line socialiser or hard core gamer? If you like to socialise in mmorpgs don't try swg. groupage is next to non-existant (please don't write back saying always groups at dant mining station....solo group forming anyone?) If you like to just solo the majority of your time you may like it.

4... Are you a casual gamer? If the answer is yes swg is for you. It doesnt take long to master some professions and 12 hour stint at the keyboard.

Depending on your finances and a free months play the only way to tell is to try it in the end. Lineage is poor apart from the cool graphics, COH may be a shallow with not much content to hold attention for long and the greatest game of them all (daoc) is just playable by the hard core population now :(

Not just no but HELL NO.

Sony does not deserve your money. There are SO many better games out there. Give them a try. If it's a Star Wars fix you need, just watch the movies again. Much more satisfying and a lot less expensive...

Yes you should.  However, if I were you I'd take all message board posts (including this one) regarding MMOs should be taken with a grain of salt.

There are a lot of different MMOs out there and there's one for everyone.  People just have to find what they like and stick with it.

SWG was released during a MMO dry spell and as such saw a vast number of people rush out and try it (plus having Star Wars in the title helped) and as such there were a large number of people who don't like the game.

However, the games subscription numbers continue to rise, despite what many would tell you on various boards.  SWG is a solid game provided you're not going to try and grind through all 30+ professions.  If you do that SWG won't fun for long if at all.

The biggest problem facing MMOs, including SWG, when it comes to word of mouth is power gamers.  Power gamers, generally the most vocal group of gamers, are the players who will rip through the game and be done with it in a matter of a couple months, if not less and then complain there's nothing to do and/or the game is broken yada yada yada.  The reason this is a problem is because there are alot of people out there who read message boards, much like these, to determine if a game is worth buying or not and all those people get is a biased opinion.  Hopefully, some of those people take the posts with a grain of salt and so some more research on the game before deciding that it's not worth purchasing.

Personally I love the game, I have two account and don't see any reason to cancel one of them or stop playing all together.  The game is not perfect, but since launch is has become a much better game.  That's another thing to keep in mind...when was the last time anyone knocking an MMO played that one?  With MMOs you see lots of changes over the course of a few months and sometimes those changes completely alter how the good the game is.  SWG has only gotten better since launch and the space expansion, Jump To Lightspeed, will most likely make the game seem like it's two games instead of one seeing as you'll have both the ground and space aspects.

Anyway, I'm rambling.  I suggest you play try the game and if you like it, great, if you don't, you can always get your money back from LucasArts.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Read this by gamespy and then consider that gamespy most never has a bad reveiw of a game.

lol that review was taken almost 14 months ago. Do you understand that mmorpgs tend to change from time to time?  lol, you took a review that was written 3 weeks after release.

Come on...I'm not in love with SWG, but if you are trying to convince people that this game sucks, you HAVE to try better than that.

Also, half of Gamespys reviews have become crap anyways.  The best way to see if a game sucks or not, is to try it for yourself and make your own decisions.

If you are a starwars fan and not a power gamer then you will like this game.

If you like the treadmill gameing style, where you camp and kill for a thousand years to level then you will not like this game.

If you are a crafter you will love this game. You do not have to fight to get money for crafting. you can just harvest the material you need.

I did't like the game that much. It had good character customization and graphics and okay good gameplay. But I wouldn't buy it if I was youimage

The point I was making has less to do with the current state of the game and more to do with the dishonesty, poor business model and poor development strategies by Sony and SWG's development team. The problems with SWG has little to do with it’s design, but mostly to there incompetence and willingness to accept money for products they know are unfinished.

I unsderstand what you mean about the reveiw being dated, but you have to take it's content in context. These people running SWG were willing to realse the game and do the things (or not do) discribed in that article. That says alot abou the company/developers Integrity and their values.

i started on UO - went to EQ then to SWG.

    id rate them

    1. UO
    2. SWG
    3. EQ <-- overated pap (became big due to OMG UO IN LIKE 3D!!!!! MUST HAVE!!!!)

If you like star wars ull love it. You can spend endless amounts of time doing star wars type things that dont even involve you leveling or crafting or whatever.

Its a good game. end of really.

While i have not even played SWG since january(apart for a brief return to check the stae of the game out-have a review somewhere) I have to say i can count mmorpg in one hand that came out in an acceptable state.

Most mmorpg come out in a bad state.UO,AO,EQ all had a horrible launch. In short worse then SWG.

Now this is no excuse for a company doing  so but fact remains games do get better with time in most cases.

Now honestly SoE do listen to their players.A lot of the changes in SWG have come from player demand most notable is of course the numerous jedis running around the game now.

Now is the game worth it.After a return for a couple of weeks about 2 months ago i have to say a sad no.

Mind you it has improved.Less bugs, more stability, player cities, vechiles. But really all this is such a side note now because only one thing is on the remaining players mind-jedi.

So really while they did add a lot of stuff no one seems too intrested(or are intrested very short term). And one thing you should never kill in a mmorpg is variety but thats totally gone in SWG with everyone having one aim only.

Aren't they still offering a 14-day free trial? If that is true, then you don't have to spend anything to try it out.

As for me, I tested it in Beta and played from launch to this past February. Now, I'm a die-hard Star Wars fan who wanted other options as far as "making a name for myself" and exploring little known area in a Star Wars setting. Well, that wasn't allowed for in this particular game. All the worthwhile content is centered on either of the two factions: Imperial and Rebel. There is a Neutral faction, however, in regards to things to do, "quests", etc., there wasn't much. Truth be told, the game is a PvP game, anything that is worth the time involves you being in a faction, and that in turn makes you pvp+ if overt and pvp"better watch your step" if covert.

The game looks beautiful, mind you. I agree with both of the sentiments above. There is a game out there for everyone. The arguments about which game is "better" are always funny as those involved are wrong. I may like game X more than game Y. Is game X better? For my personal tastes it is. For the next guy it may not be. I also think SWG is a good "in-between" game. If you're looking for something to do while waiting on another MMORPG it's a good pick-up.

The lack of attention to things to do that are not GCW (Galatic Civil War) based is what drove this Star Wars Fan away. I'm not so sure the use of big name liceneses (like SW, Middle Earth,) are a good idea for MMORPGs. The set storyline doesn't allow for much creativity and deviation from that line, which in turn creates a focused, narrow game, IMO.

"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

I found the following when playing swg a month ago:

    1. Lack of community - alot of servers rated meduim lack a decent community so u need to choose server wisely.

    2. crafting etc - swg is good if u like crafting or missions, although most of the missons are repetitive.

    3. Graphics etc- really good graphics and customization ability.

    4. PVP - swg not ideal for pvp , since jedi is the only best class unlike other mmorgs where different classes are balanced.

    5. Pve - pretty good but not extensive areas to hunt for hard core players who wana lvl.

I guess it all depends on what ur looking for in a mmporg. Not everyone will want the same things in a mmorpg. Best to try out the trial period and make up[ ur mind.

personally i feel the company could have done alot better with swg.Maybe spend alot more time in developing it before releasing it to get rid of bugs , balance out the proffesions and introduce better quests/missions etc.I guess they thought with the star wars name they would get away with it,which they have if u look at the numbers subcribed.

swg seems like a" jack of all trades and master of non".A game u like playing but feel something is missing which u cant pinpoint. Thats why ive stopped playing.

I wouldn't recommend SWG.  I have been a member for over a year and it keeps going downhill.  At this point I think I am going to go back to Anarchy Online, AO,  (simply because it's fun for me).  I thought SWG would be "the one" but SOE just keeps ruining it.  If you can read their forums I highly suggest it.

All MMORPGs have their "issues" and it depends on your style of play.  Personally, AO has it all besides a few points.  One of the few "downsides" that people have with AO is the steep learning curve.  But I like a good challenge.  AO is almost 4 years old but has finally started to "mature".  MMORPGs seem to have a rather long maturing cycle.

    Kindly and Good Luck,

Ok, which servers dont lack community?

    Just questioning, ill try SWG

You can try Valcyn. We have our problems now and again, but the whole server joins together to get rid of problems. Overall, its a great server to be on, and has everything: a stable economy, active PvP, active roleplaying, and just a great all around community.

No offense, but the SWG economies across the board are nearly out of control with hyper-inflation and the credit and item dupe(s).  Also, I have yet to see an SWG server with any realistic PvPing going on since a good number of the professions are not well balanced and that doesn't matter what server anyone is on (especially when a Jedi gets involved).  Although, I do agree that SWG has a fairly nice community.

I voted yes because if you are prepared to pay its one of the greatest mmorpg.

The worlds keep expanding the job list is getting bigger and the entire system is improving every day. It already is a great game and you can make a lot of friend. But every day they add somehing new so you can keep exploring new options. The worlds are enormous and there are loads of secrets. And if your done playing on the ground you can also buy jump to lightspeed to get even more options.

The game is a must for starwars fans who can afford it. And its a great choise even when your not a starwars fan.

If you can buy it then buy it.imageimage
