getting the last word

PlanoMMPlanoMM Member Posts: 1,267

i think it is so funny, that on every forum you have some people that just HAVE to have the last word.  no matter what.  such is the sign of an underdeveloped mind.  just like not being able to have a discussion without being right and everyone else wrong.  now i realize that we have some younger individuals in this forum, but id say that some of the younger folk have proven themselves much more mature in these matters than some adults.  sad, if you ask me.

feel free to flame me and/or this thread.  i just think that its funny as hell when you tell someone that youre done with a convo and not even going to check back on it, they still feel like they HAVE to post again to save face.  who are they typing it for?  the intended individual isnt even going to read it, so why bother?  lol, yes i know the answer, but thats me point.  were on the internet, why would you care what someone that you cant see and prolly will never meet thinks about you or your views.  you can have the most well thought out posts and airtight avatars and sigs, and someone will still think your a retard or dumbass.  no matter what, its going to happen.

unless you realize this, you will always run into problems on forums.  you gotta learn to let some things go.  the great thing about forums and such is that there is such a diverse group of ideals and beliefs that its unbelievable what some people think.  and when you can respect others as much as you do yourself, it can be quite insightful and enjoyable to read about them.  i have a blast on these forums.  i hope that i dont offend anyone, and me apologies if i do.  just pointing out something that i thought was funny when reading what some people think.

discuss.

    Hey PlanoMM.

I am reading through the drizzt series again. I thought i saw somewhere where you said if a person wanted to start the series, they should start reading at The icewind dale series and I disagree.

They should start with the Dark Elf Trilogy (the one starts in the underdark) then read the icewind dale series, then read the other one i forget the name actually, it has 4 books though . . .

    SPOILER ALERT

You can start wtih the dark elf trilogy as long as you don't read the italicized prologues to the parts in the book. That would be the best in my opinion. Also, perhaps before reading the icewind dale trilogy, reading the canticle (5 books).

Then after that, read the tale of swords or whatever its called, then the series with jarlaxle and entreri. I haven't read the 3rd book yet, so no spoilers (I R too cheap to buy hardcover).

I like Drizzt a lot, but I think jarlaxle is my favorite character in that whole series. Drizzt is more brute force in a nice pretty way to accomplish his goal, occasionally having some people save his butt at times, Jarlaxle is more creative and mysterious. Entreri is akin to Drizzt. Bruenor is boring, Regis is a terrible character, Wulfgar was always entertaining and Catti-Brie I was neutral to. She's kind of boring too, silver flash = someone is dead. I also hate crenshinbon's character with an undying passion.

Also, the old illustrations on the books were absolutely terrible, like your avatar picture is so terrible it's amazing it was even published. The newer illustrations are much better.

    On to your topic.

There are people that love to argue to argue, and i get tired of it, most arguments ensue because people cannot read properly and cannot convey their own thoughts properly. If both parties read and conveyed their thoughts properly then they would quickly identify where they disagree and they would go on discussing the reasons for why they disagree and it would all be civilized. I am saying this first to myself before anyone else.

But yeah, there are certain people in real life i do not argue with just on the way in which they argue. They do not do it respectfully and seem to be condescending when arguing, therefore, I do not argue with them.

    I like your signature :).

I love debate and the more passionate people are in their views, the more fun it becomes.  That said, I think it is best when the threads start out combative and end up with people finding the ground where they agree just to disagree.  Granted it doesnt happen much here, but sometimes it does.

ANd I agree wit Cryo that some people just aren't debatable material.  WHen they get so attached to their view point that they decide to quit the forums or start with really nasty name calling then its time to back up and find another thread to argue on.

One excellent way to get the last word in arguement is to point out when people are breaking the rules of the forum they are posting in...

Hey PlanoMM... no referral links, they are against the ROC.

Just a heads up for your own protection :)

    hi cryomatrix,

yeah, im starting over with the series again too.  one of the best kept secrets in the book world i believe.  i think that they should make a movie based on the books.  but only if done perfectly though.  id hate to see them screw it up.  i understand why you think they should start with the Dark elf trilogy.  the reason that i said start with Icewind Dale trilogy instead is because when you fnally get to the end of Dark elf trilogy, you get this awesome sense of......i dont know what to call it.  kinda like the feeling you get when you watched all of the StarWars in order like IV, V, VI, then I, II, then finally III.  i dont know if it was the same for the rest of you.  but it was like putting that last piece of the puzzle in.  that feeling.  but it doesnt mean that youre wrong, like i said i can definitely understand why you think they should start with Dark Elf.

i love the character of Jaxlaxle.  hes so freagin smooth.  Drizzt is still me hero, but yeah, Jaxlaxle is way cool.  Regis is nothing but comic relief really, sometimes bordering on lame.  but hey.  and Cattie-bree is freagin hot.  Wulfgar is a teddy bear (a 7 foot teddy bear, lol).

i agree about some of the illustrations.  and thank you about the sig.  and thank you for your insight.  thats what i was hoping for.  a civil discussion about it.

When we talk about politics and religion, and other touchy matters, so much on these forums, the tendency to become very adamant in what you are arguing is inevitable. If you tell a hardcore theist there is no God, he's going to want to get a retort, even if the atheist says he's not going to read it. Same goes with any other "last word" you speak of.

I agree with what you're saying in terms of the pieces falling together, because now you are like, this is how Drizzt is. But truthfully, from reading icewind dale trilogy first, you knew how Drizzt was. I hate knowing things in advance in terms of story. I hate movie previews, the most fun i've had watching a movie is going into a movie without seeing one preview.

Anyway, i prefer to not know what happens.

The thing about Jarlaxle is, it is such a creative character because you know he has like 3432432432 magical items and i always want to know what everyone does, so i love the parts that talk about his magical items.

I'd have to say a movie down with menzoberranzen in the background may do very well if properly done. Movies usually like LOTR don't do very well. The reason I think LOTR did well was partially because of its legend status.

It was done very well, but it would be tough to duplicate.

To make a movie of lets say, the dark elf trilogy would be very tough. It has appealing elements. Sexy dark elves, scary spiders, sex, lies, deciet, mysetery, death, violence, thoughtfullness, but it would have had to be done very very carefully.

Another problem with a movie like that, is it will be very expensive to pull it off right. I don't think Hollywood producing companies (the real powerhosues in the movie industry). (the actors are mere pawns).

The thing is, i think historically, Sci-Fi doesn't do well, plus a movie like that has to have amazing sound effects nad would cost a crap load to make. If it sucks, then you're finished.

I think hollywood l ikes to make stupid and simple comedies that cost almost nothing to make except for the salaries of the cast. Like, "Guess who" or when ashton kutcher marries that black chick. A nice story, comedy, but in reality, the cost is miniscule and you know just by the cast and the type of movie it is, will bring in a nice profit. It may not be 300m , but 40m on a movie that costs 25m is damn good profit don't you think, and you know the risk is low for that. Even that piece of shit gigli movie probably wasn't such a huge loss.

But if you go out on a limb like Final Fantasy and it sucks, you get fucked, i think that movie lost 114m or it cost 114m or something like that. So it would be tough to do. The movie coming out after Halo was trashed.

Probalby because the risk was greater than the potential reward. Movies like that, starship troopers and stuff, do not do well either.

SO yeah i'd love to see a movie made of that. I think it may work. Then again, Harry Potter worked, but the fan base is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> R.A. Salvatore's fan base.

If they were to make a movie though.

They could have a female character be played by let's say, scarlet johannsen or kiera knightley or halle berry. Drizzt would be played by Jet Li perhaps or keanu reeves or decaprio. But the problem is, i bet you the dialogue will be so stupid. I can see them screwing up the dialogue. Making the matron mothers make lame comments like arnold in batman 3 or whatever it was.

The stage set for Menzoberranzen would have to be well put, like LOTR quality and scary as fuck. They'd need a scary spider scene. Also Drizzt's fighting matches should have nice camera angles and be somewhat matrix-like but definitely appealing and on the edge of your seat. Guen should be a great work of CPG.

I guess the closest movie in terms of it woudl be underdark and I didn't think it was a bad movie, but i'm easy to please, i doubt the public would like it. Perhaps, the LOTR director would do it well.

I liked King Kong but i'm not sure other people liked it, oh well, my rambling thoughts.

    Book 1 = 1 movie.
    Book 2 = 2nd movie
Book 3 = never gets put into picture because the 2nd movie sucked so bad ^^ that woudl be hard to do.

    Cryomatrix

P.S. Did you read war of the spider queen a six book set, i kind of enjoyed that, there's a character that is quite well done and amusing, i place him more appealing than Jarlaxle.

I only do my last wording's in a comical manner, usually to expedite the threads death by hijacking it, that's always fun to do with a dying topic.

I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.

Sometimes, when I get into a heated debate, I need the last word.  Then I realize I was posting like a dick and take off of the forums for a couple days to cool off and let wounds mend, hopefully.

Also, If I know I'm right on a fact and someone else is wrong, then I need the last word as well.  A fact is a fact, not an opinion; nor something that can be preceived in different ways.

ok, cryo, i see what youre saying and that does make sense.  me favorite character trait of Jaraxle is his patented smoothness.  no matter what the odds look like, hes always in control.  like you said, hes always got something (usually magical) up his sleeve.

the movie idea would have to be executed perfectly for it to work.  the music and sound effects would be of upmost importance, IMO.  even more so than the action sequences (and im not saying that the action sequences arent important).  the music could really set the movie apart when you think about where all this is taking place, menzoberranzen, home to the most feared badasses in the world.  me favorite book of the series is Exile of the Dark Elf Trilogy.  it really shows how badass Drizzt can be.  i can even imagine some tunes by Disturbed as the fight scene between him and his siblings starts to take shape.  have you ever heard the song, "Down with the Sickness" by Disturbed?  that song fits in to the scheme perfectly.  anyway, i would rather the movie never be made than to be made badly.  scarlet johannsen or kiera knightley or halle berry, ironic that you would mention these women, cause ive given extensive thought to who should play in it, and ive thought of each one of these women.  i like Jet Li, but i think that hed be a bit too short and stocky for the part, IMO.  if there was someone taller and smaller build, that could move like him, theyd be perfect.  Reeves, possibly, but idk.  his martial arts always looked too forced to me.  didnt flow quite right.  what about Orlando Bloom?  he makes a purty elf, but dont know what his martial arts or quickness looks like (dont want it to look like in LOTR, too unnatural).

When we talk about politics and religion, and other touchy matters, so much on these forums, the tendency to become very adamant in what you are arguing is inevitable. If you tell a hardcore theist there is no God, he's going to want to get a retort, even if the atheist says he's not going to read it. Same goes with any other "last word" you speak of.

youre right, modjoe.  however, me point was simply that you can share your opinion, or what you think about a subject without getting offensive.  or should be able to.  im not arguing with you, cause youre right, some people dont know how to state their opinion and be done with it.  they got to be right.  thats what im talking about.  i realize that sometimes we ALL get adamant and touchy when we discuss these nono issues.  i think that the difference is that while i dont agree with someones opinion, i can still be their friend and respect them and their own viewpoint, realizing that we all are so diverse in our beliefs and thats what makes us interesting.  i didnt live your life, had i, i might feel very much the way you do.  and the same goes for you.  what pisses me off is when some one insists that im just stupid and incapable of inteligent thought, when they dont have a clue because they havent lived me life.

I can understand that, but im talking about things that are subject to interpretation.  on those issues, fact isnt always a fact, so someone has to compromise, and if thats not a possibility, agree to disagree.  theres nothing at all wrong with admitting that youre not going to reach an agreement on the issue, especially when youre talking about religion.  ive said it before, but some of me friends are people that dont believe like me.  we discussed it, and realized that were never gonna completely agree on the matter, so why not let the other have his beliefs and opinions.  still in contact with alot of me evolutionist friends.  i used to be an evolutionist.

anyway, just me 2 gps worth.
