I got ESO last year on a Steam sale for $10 and haven't installed it yet. Right now, I'm getting a little tired of my current MMO and thought I'd fire this up and see how it is. I played a little bit of Skyrim a few years ago but didn't have much of an idea what I was doing. I played some of STO, NW, WildStar, and I'll include WoW for the sake of being complete but it wasn't long and it was years ago. My current MMO is City of Heroes Homecoming but I've done the content often enough that it's feeling stale. If I play ESO I'm pretty much going in a total newbie. Until I determine if I'll keep playing, I don't want to spend more money on it. So I'm wondering:

Which ESO server is RP and PVE? How newbie-friendly is it?
Which race/class is best for a beginner who will likely be soloing for a while?
What can I expect when I play (yes, this is an open-ended question, sorry)?
Any suggestions for someone starting out?

I'm willing to leave my comfort zone a bit so don't take my past games as a deciding factor in whether or not I'd like ESO. I stopped playing those games for a reason. Thank you in advance.

To start I don't want to bash the game, this an honest question.. This post is a little long

OK so here goes. I've been out of mmo gaming a few years. Recently I decided to.give it a go again. As a point of reference last time i played an MMO was guild wars 2 and stopped due to other real life matters right around the time heart of thorns launched. But at that time I was casual at best.

Anyway, a few weeks back I started looking to play an MMO again (note I have been following pantheon as I like Brad's vision for MMOs ie...(bEing true multi player and social). The three games I've narrowed it down to have been ESO, NEVERWINTER, and GW2.

I have friends playing ESO, and GW2, both kind of want me there, and I've always wanted to try Neverwinter as I wanted to explore dnd lore and the gameplay has always looked fun.

So out of those three I have played some Neverwinter, and some ESO (first timer for ESO). Neverwinter is proving fun but very linear, more so than I typically like. But the community is both friendly and helpful. And the combat is proving to be really well done. The story is decent, and the community says it gets even better later..

I've Held off on going back to GW2 for now.

Which leaves me with ESO.. So I picked up a box for this about 9 months ago. (Pre expansion). But didn't start playing, very casually for now, until a few weeks ago. Now while I have spent about 5 or 6 hours in game I've only reached level 12 as I've been exploring the new areas and being pulled around by the starting island quests.

So last night as I was running around I began wondering, when does the game become fun? I mean the world seems well developed, the story arcs are decent.. I did like the beginning part where I had to escape the afterlife.. But nothing so far after that has grabbed me, or hooked me enough to say, wow I want to play this game long term. I do see the potential of a lot of depth within the game. The openness of character development is nice, as is the big world, but while the world is big it seems rather lifeless, and static, and while the stories and quests seem well written, they seem slow and drawn out. Lastly is the combat. Out of the titles I've listed. The combat in ESO seems rather bland, and clunky.

So I'm here asking when does the game pick up speed and become fun? I still plan to stick around for a bit to keep trying it some more. But it's lacking the oompff of the other titles mentioned above.. One of my friends told me last night I need to leave the starter islands for it to get fun. I asked him shouldn't that be when the game really needs to grab your attention.. He agreed with me on that..that it is slow. And then wanted me to come to an area where he is out which apparently locked behind a paid content download. That's another matter entirely. Anyway unlogged out shortly afterwards. I did make it to the red guard capital.

So ESO players.. When does this game become fun? Im sorry if this seems critical of the game, but its an honest question. Thank you for honest answers you may give.

I was sitting in the iron weilds little dungeon base thing, and I was looking at the settings tried to use their calibration for the gamma. It looks redcilious, like some one put electric lights through out the dungeon haha. Then add in if you dont mod the game and remove the cursor target thing it shows you where every one is. I dono how people play like that, it is way to easy. You can see everything like its a bright day, and the cursor shows u where everything is. There is literally no suspense at all. Thats not even getting into the fact that the traps are way to easy to see if you put it on their setting, it makes it look like the person who set the trap was retarded. Try finding them in the dark with the cheat cursor off and see what happens.

With the gamma all the way down, 7.2 surround sound, and the cursor garbage off, it scared the shit out of me when i missed one of the npc hiding in the corner hahaha.

The Remnants of Hope - "Light from a few can be a beacon to many"

Ebonheart Pact – NA PC
http://www.remnantsofhope.com/

About Us
Remnants of Hope (RoH) was founded June 7, 2009, as a Star Wars Galaxies guild. It has since evolved into an active community supporting divisions in ESO, SWTOR, GW2, and WoW. We have over 500 active members in a positive gaming environment.

We are more than your average gaming guild. Our ESO division has over 150 active members with 35 to 50 online at peak times. While we’re an Ebonheart Pact guild for PVP purposes, there is no alliance restriction for our guild activities. Come one, come all!

We offer members every aspect of game-play from PVE, PVP, RP to Crafting. Our website forums are expansive with members actively posting and building friendships. We host a Discord server, where our members meet socially and participate in events.

Because we’re community orientated, you will never feel lost in the crowd, or like a cog in a machine.

Do you enjoy…

Crafting
We assist with leveling crafting, helping members acquire items and providing crafting tutorial events. We’re kicking off auctions and support other departments with prizes. While we’re not a trade guild, we encourage members to provide invites into successful trade guilds, giving our members the best of both worlds within our multi-faceted community.

PvE
RoH covers the full range of PvE, with events scheduled four nights a week. Activities range from super-casual Leveling with Friends groups to Trials. Additionally, we run multiple pledges and random dungeons a night, including slow-paced Intro to Dungeon runs for people new to group play. Finally, we spice up our PvE with special events like a no-pants zerg, costume contest, dungeon races and more.

PvP
We encourage fun and friendly competitive gaming to both fans of PvP and those curious about it. We are always willing to lend a hand with builds, classes, and how it all comes together to make a character effective in PvP. We enjoy all aspects of PvP and offer groups for Cyrodiil questing, small-scale skirmishes, the opportunity to join larger groups to attack keeps, Sky Shard Hunting groups, Imperial City content, Battlegrounds matches, and Delve clears. Our alliance for PVP is Ebonheart Pact. Our home campaign is Sotha Sil.

RP
Enjoy collaborative storytelling? Join us for guild-hosted stories that will appeal to both new and seasoned role-players. We are interested in character-driven stories where choices matter to the overall story arc. We provide assistance with characters stories along with introductions into current guild stories. Our forums are robust and provide an interactive writing experience for all.

Housing & Fashion

The Housing and Fashion Department is dedicated to bringing all that ESO has for those aspects of the game to our members. Housing workshops, guides on how to look your best, and of course costume contests are just some of the offerings from this department. RoH loves to look it's best while going on adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as knowing how to decorate a great place to relax, party with friends, or admire trophies of our conquests.

ESO Gameplay
We offer a play-your-own-way environment where members are encouraged but not required to attend guild events. We understand that some will enjoy end-game content where others might like to level slowly, working through ESO story content, partaking in roleplay, crafting or joining in on random adventures.

What we offer:

1. Active, engaged forums, allowing members to meet people across divisions.
2. Discord Voice and Text Chat Server.
3. Freedom to play the game any way you want.
4. Scheduled events on the calendar as well as “random” activities through guild chat.
5. Friendly community and environment.
6. Structured leadership, with officers for each department: PvE, PvP, RP, Crafting, and Recruitment.
7. Freedom to play other divisions and casual games.

What we value in members:

Positive Attitude

Maturity

Friendly Nature

Respectful

Team Player

"This is the guild I've been searching for.” ~ New RoH member, Saelhinne, said recently.

Visit us at remnantsofhope.com to apply!

Because our community is so awesome, we have an application and trial membership process that allows you to get to know us, and members to meet you. Consider the application a handshake, we take it and the process very seriously. With that in mind, be thorough when you fill it out. We look forward to meeting a potential new member.

Yes, I'm back. After approximately 18 months away I've started playing ESO again recently. I've been mostly leveling Necros while getting re-acquainted.

I just learned yesterday that the upcoming final major patch for the year has one base game change (and a related 5-fold increase to the transmutation stone bank limit - currently 100/200 for no-sub and ESO+ going to 500/1000) that is huge in its implication.

That change is a new tab being added to "collections" for item sets. Doesn't sound like much does it?

Well, not only does it add a searchable database of the more than 500 unique item sets in the game with a description of where to get it, what it does, etc. but "collecting" those sets will have a huge impact on inventory management since most of our inventory is usually taken up by set pieces we may want to use at some point or on some future alt.

The way it will work is that if you equip an item from a set, that adds it to your account-wide collection and you will then be able to "craft" it at the transmutation forge using transmute stones + mats, tempers and trait stones. This applies to every kind of non-crafted set whether it comes from overland zones, trials, arenas, dungeons, PvP, monster shoulders and helms, etc.

If you play a lot of alts that you often want to equip with sets that another of your character is also equipping this means there's no need to grind again - you can just duplicate it at the transmute forge instead provided you have the mats to do it. The transmute stone cost for doing this will be either 50 or 25 if you have collected all the items for the set. Additionally, when you "re-construct" an item at the forge you can give it whatever trait your crafter knows so you can equip a dungeon drop from the set you want that came with a crappy trait and re-con it with the trait you actually want on it.

I know that I'm not alone in having roughly 3/4 of my storage space taken up by duplicates and sets I may or may not use in the future. Sets in ESO are constantly tweaked and rebalanced so I even think twice about deconstructing the crappier ones. No need to worry about that any longer. Just equip it to collect it and then decon knowing you can craft it again in the future if they buff it and you want to use it.

So not exactly a change to storage itself but a way to remove the greatest pressure on the need for space. It'll help everyone but probably even more for the non subscribers who want to craft since this should create lots of room to store mats in the bank without as much of a need for the ESO+ crafting bag as is currently the case.

Once it goes live you'll have to log in each character (also not 100% sure but likely no "historical" adding to the collection of set pieces you once used but deleted before this goes live) and whatever they have equipped will be added to the collections. You can then just quickly equip anything you haven't equipped yet before you deconstruct it to make room. You'll also obviously want to think twice about deconstructing anything that is purple or better depending on your upgrade temper situation.

This patch goes on the PTS tomorrow and will be live sometime in November.

Totally unexpected and awesome change.

Hello everyone,

(please move if needed)

Edit: Did not expect this to blow up a little, thanks for reading!

I have been playing Elder Scrolls Online since August 2013, I hopped into every beta, every test, and have been a loyal subscriber since.

Here is my review as a player who loves the game.

I give the game a solid 7/10, however, with the lag and issues the game currently has (been for a while) its in my book falling down to a 3/10 despite how much I love the game, I cannot play it.

Firstly, lets talk about world building, story, and PVE content

World Building

World building is fantastic in Elder Scrolls Online, you really feel immersed and feel like you can seemingly get lost in the story, the quest, and just how beautiful the world is overall. The world building is one of the main factors of selling for this game in my own opinion

Story

Story is the number 1 selling point for ESO, its a narrative driven game. The game is very well done, some Chapters stories are shorter than DLC (Graymoor for example, which is sad) But, none the less every story is very well done. Even just the small quest in the zone. They're so amazing, no matter what you always want to continue. I think I found myself lost in them more than once.

PVE Content

For an MMORPG it feels lacking in this department, yes they have Trials, yes they have dungeons. But almost everything takes no thought or skill. If you're a WoW veteran you wont find a real challenge in this game. Yes, you can say "Vet HM!" Well, that just adds one or two mechanics to the entire thing and increases damage. The mechanics are already lacking. For example, they got "Tank Swapping" about a year ago and to the playerbase this was "revolutionary".

For PVE I never found myself truly challenge, even doing quest or story I would just plow through everything, decimating everything like I was a god.
For Dungeons, often if not Vet you can solo them, while in Vet you can just take 2-3 DPS friends and run through it quickly..... DLC Is a little different some require group play, but its still pretty thoughtless going through it.

I'm a tank main on every game I play, for this game I found tanking to be a joke I would just AFK block, move around and debuff the boss. I didn't have to worry about my group so much because healing is so powerful in this game, I rarely also had to worry about positioning.

Champion System

They have a Champion System which grants additional passives. It is not hard to gain points in this, but getting rank 1 to 50 is a false ending and you have 810 more levels to go. It feels awful for a new player. However, you can get to 810 pretty quick (5 months maybe). These passives are very strong and the 810 levels are account wide, while 1-50 is character wide. The Champion System is also one of the main concerns with the players and development and has been put on hold and hasn't increased for nearly 2 years.

From the PTS patch notes:

Crown Store Gifting
Beginning with Update 18, many Crown Store products (with the exception of Houses and Instant Unlocks such as Vampire bites) will be available to gift to other players!

It uses the mail system and not a secure trading interface. When you buy something in the Crown Store you now have two options: buy for yourself or gift for someone. If you chose gift mail is sent to the recipient with a link to claim the gift.

This is not all that unusual in MMOs these days and many let you just put cash shops items for sale in auction houses. It would be extremely naive to think that this won't be used for crown item for gold exchanges in addition to it's titular purpose, gifting.

But they're doing it in a way that is risky as hell since someone needs to go first: you give them the gold first or they gift you the item first. Scams galore will happen not unlike what used to be fairly common with gold for vampire or WW bite exchanges, but IMO this will be much more common since it's an obvious way to buy gold with a couple of intermediary steps... or maybe the high risk won't make it all that common?

What do you guys think?

With the expansion called the "Greymoor Chapter" set to release next week, Tuesday May 26th, 2020 I wanted to create this post as a buyer beware.

First, ask yourself this question. Do you enjoy and/or want to PvP in Elder Scrolls Online?

If you answered "No", to this question then this warning has no applicability to you, please feel free to buy and play the expansion, you will probably enjoy it quite a bit.

Now if you answered "Yes", to this question then please see the warning below.

PvP in Elder Scrolls Online has become terribly affected by huge latency/lag issues combined with recent changes that literally prevent players from queuing up to play PvP together. That's right, this is the first MMORPG i've run into that will not allow you to queue for a battlegrounds with a friend, guild member, or anyone for that matter, they completely removed the ability to queue with other players in any fashion for PvP. Next, the server that hosts their massive "open world" PvP environment called Cyrodiil has become literally unplayable for months now. The latency is so bad that players on average experience a 2-5 second delay after activating an ability during peak times, and no it has nothing to do with how many players are on your screen. When you do find a group of players to PvP with/against that delay increases from 2-5 seconds to anywhere of 5-10 seconds and occasionally doesn't even read your key input at all.

So you may be asking yourself, is this guy just disgruntle, maybe he just lacks skill, or maybe he has no idea what he is talking about. I employ you to do your own research, go check out the ESO forums, you will literally see hundreds of these complaints.

So finally after reading some encourtaging news about bugfixes and better content I decided to give this game a chance.

I got some ESO keys installed the game and have now been playing for some hours to lvl5.

I do encounter some difficulties though:

1. Storage. My backpack (if here is such a thing) becomes full extremely quickly. Is there a way to get bags and stuff? And where? or is it better to discard everything as you can buy all the ingredients and food later on, for almost nothing?

2. Official forum. I didn't get an invite to join the official forum, which apparently you need. How do I get one?

3. Imperial character. I noticed you can only create one of you own the imperial pack, which costs 2100 crowns and the only way to get that is to pay RL money for crowns, either by subscription or a one time investment of 21 euros for a pack of crowns. Or did I miss something?

For the rest it's an OK game. I am not particularly impressed by the character creation and my Skyrim with some mods looks a bit better than ESO. The fighting tutorial was good, I missed that in Skyrim, and I like the block and interrupt mechanics.

Generally it makes me wonder though if paying without subscribing is worth it. Without stuff like a crafting bag and crowns apparently being the main way to unlock a lot of not only cosmetic but also lots of very useful stuff, doesn't the game get quite tiresome after a while?
