Any Game Like ... ?

comitroncomitron Member UncommonPosts: 37
Are there any games out there like Overwatch, but high fantasy (less gun/technology)?

If not, why not? I think the platform would be great.. boil down the MMORPG to a few main components. 1) Unique Characters... take this element from MMO Character creation so there are infinite number of character looks. 2) character development.. as you progress and earn points, you level your character, unlocking armor, weapons, skills, spells, maps. 3) Maps... the maps could be both PVP or PVE, dungeons or castle sieges etc. 4) Lobby would be where you can queue for a new game, hit the auction house, or buy from the publishers cash shop. 5) No need to spend development time and money to create overland connecting environmental maps or quest hubs, the quests would basically be daily challenges of things like beat a certain score in a certain map, collect a certain number of items, complete x number of pvp battles successfully etc.

The features you list sound similar to Guild Wars 1 PvP.

I have not played it for years, so I don't know if it still applies.

It had character creation with a central PvP hub. You then had access to PvP and PvE arenas, with daily challenges. This was all completely separate to the "Questing" game, where you could literally specify you are interested in creating a PvP character only.
You spent points unlocking new spells and types of armour.

There are many arena games out these - the challenge is finding one with the roleplaying aspects you are interested in. You may be better off finding a MMORPG with a strong PvP element, not participating in the PvE content. Most games will offer PvP gear progression, which means you can literally stay in the PvP world, never interacting with the PvE counterpart. Depending on the focus of the developers, these PvP worlds may offer more content than an arena-only game.

I am suggesting this based on your interest in "castle sieges", "a central hub" and "dungeons". This is more frequent in MMORPG PvP zones, rather than arena games. Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2 come to mind, both having dedicated PvP progression and PvP hubs. Both arguably deliver these points fairly well.

If you are more interested in arena gameplay, there was a breed of arena games in late 2000's and early 2010's. Most people probably don't remember. This is before DOTA2 and League of Legends. All of these arena games were rightfully labelled MOBAs back then - as the label MOBA was used to label arena PvP games, DOTA being in the minority of the genre. The top-down strategy view of DOTA was one of many possibilities. The majority has third person action views. You had tens, if not hundreds of "Overwatch-like" games with fantasy settings. Vindictus comes to mind, still being relevant today. There were many more though, some of which might still be around.

I played Mirage, pretty interesting.. game play was cool, but lacked that "something" that gets you attached to your character.. same as all the MOBAs out there.. you are just jacking into a throw away avatar. And yes i know Overwatch is the same, that's one of the things i want to exchange, as i like character development and games like Overwatch don't have that.

"For honor" looks pretty cool! if it had magic, fantasy races, and better maps this would be pretty close to what i am thinking.

Edit.. well, I did a little more research into  For Honor, and although it does have good melee combat and good graphics, and a lobby type mechanism, there isn't really much there.

I'll say then that this would be a good start...lol, add actual character creation and advancement, fantasy races, magic, and more pve options, maybe a built in type of Discord to manage guild functionality... then... it would be what I am thinking would be a great type of game.

eh.. maybe i just need to make it myself

Forge, Chivalry. Have no idea if any of those games are still alive but that is the answer.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
