Any game that claims to be a sandbox game that forces players to participate in an aspect of the game that requires them to perform an act against their will is not a true sandbox game.
I'm  not aware of this game forcing players to do anything against their will, can you provide specific example?

I'm gong to guess she means that players, in order to get certain resources, have to go into pvp zones? I think I read something like that.

It's amazing how people have different idea about what makes a "sandbox" game.
Why? Let me ask this, was Star Wars Galaxies a Sandbox game?

I think it was, many think it was. Yet it had Consensual PvP.

The point is that you are right, it is amazing how people think that a game is Sandbox just because it features FFA Full Loot PvP...it is but a feature..it is not what defines a Sandbox Game.

The problem with Albion is that it follows upon EVE's setup (actually it copies it quite faithfully). However it forgot to take under account that EVE is not a prime example of how a Sandbox game should be setup. EVE is setup in such a way as to cater to its own Background Dystopian setting of Dog eats Dog between a Corporate world swimming in greed and opportunism where Murder is just a means to an end, and it is not punished and many times rewarded.

In a non Dystopian, normal society, Murder is not rewarded.

And the problem is that I do not think that any of the Albion Designers actually asked themselves if such a Dystopian setup would work for a Game set in Fantasy.

It worked for EVE because it is in a far off place in Space... and futuristic. It is a Sci-Fi setting and it attracts specific people who like that sort of thing. Such as original ELITE, or Trade Wars players.

Albion is set in High Fantasy, the mentality of players is not the same. The majority join with Romanticized Noble Knights and Powerful Mages in mind or Humble Gatherers and Traders and Farmers. Not many go to a game such as Albion with the idea to become a great Criminal and Murderer ganking people left and with...unless... you are a disillusioned EVE player who thinks this is actually fun... (watch YouTube how EVE players make videos such as "Beginners Guide to Ganking" and laugh about it thinking it is all cool..it is within EVE maybe.but not the rest of the world).

In Fantasy MMORPG's (and most probably anywhere outside EVE) things are different there is history here that has established a base of comparison. When people hear "Sandbox" in the context of a Fantasy game the first  thought is..Ultima Online.

Recently heralded as the Premium Sandbox Game in MMORPG.com even given the 3rd place among the 10 Best MMORPG's of all time!

So compared to UO..how does Albion compare really?

I will tell you, it is Dystopian, it is shallow, it is empty of meaning and purpose and very bland. Yes it does not even have a proper Criminality Punishment system as a result. Actually Ganking is encouraged and heralded..like EVE..hence Dystopian. And it does try to funnel everyone in to territory where they will get ganked to provide "fun" for the ganker community it tries to cater at.

Did I mention that it is not a Sandbox? The game is a simply a Guild vs Guild competition MMO. Which is supposed to have Territorial Conquest but on latest news no one is able to conquer any of the Beta Guilds claimed territory because they would quit if they lose it. (you get the picture of synergy between players and Devs here don't you?)...

To be fair, it is a very stable client and server (now that 4/5 of people left and they addressed some DDOS issues), It is playable smoothly on a 10 year old PC on 4 Gigs or Ram..., it has a very smooth execution of combat (reminiscent of WoW but isometric view), skills effects are nice (again remineschent of WoW), Trinity type gameplay in PvP and PVE. And I personally like the Art Style.

However, eventually, any veteran player of MMORPG's will recognize the fact that... Gameplay > Graphics.

And Albion does not have a good Long term Gameplay, it is actually a Huge filter that eliminates players form the first day on, and only a niche remains to compete for the end game. (not unlike EVE).

And its community wants it like that and so...Let the dogs of Albion eat eachother I say. And move on.

I am looking at Legends of Aria, now that is a Sandbox game in the fine Tradition of UO. And yes people will be able to gather and raise their skills and interact with other players and run their shops and taverns and enjoy their creations from the ample sand in it without having to PvP if that is not their choice.

Anyways the conclusion is that Albion, is not a Sandbox MMORPG. To be able to choose whether you go in to gankland or not, whether you sell your wares in the Auction House or whether you try to fight in GvG...or whether to build or not yoru instanced house, are not player choices which define a game as Sandbox or not.

These types of choices are the same as in lets say WoW, to choose to go in a Battleground or not. To attack an opposite Faction player or not. To Build your instanced House or not. To craft and sell your items in the Action house or not. And we all know WoW is not a Sandbox game. The only difference really is that Albion was designed with PvP in mind and WoW with PVE in mind.

    My two cents.

Yea well it is a small game and map. So right now apparently (numbers reported ion Albion Forums) it runs with about 50k players. But it is down from the 250k that started at launch. And ..were actually overloading the server as the game is small and could not handle that many players.

So I think now it runs at its optimum population. Which is fine. A niche that may enjoy this type of setup of a game and compete, and buy gold to out compete one another etc etc as well as pays for premium every month (game really not playable without it). And works for the business model and the niche.

Here a nice video showing GvG combat. Reminiscent of WoW battleground top down. And EVE too because it all happens in Albion's 0.0 Ganklands (Outlands).

    https://youtu.be/wezp23Kpia0

But this is what the game is all about. We are very far from Sandbox..there is no role here the player can define, it is defined by the design of the game. You do not have Tools in the world. You cannot decide to open a Tavern and Socially interact with others. You will not be forming musical bands here to give performances from town to town. In fact most people will ignore you in chat even. You go to Ganklands you get attacked KoS, kill on sight for your "loot"..and since there is not consequences for killing someone else..it is FFA, and full of Gankbears.

The gameplay is linear quite directed.

Now, if you like this. By all means go and fave your fun. No problem there!

But lets call a spade a spade here. Albion is not a Sandbox game and this is the answer to the OP question.

I just read the article on Legends of Aria and it mentioned having PVP zones and non PVP zones.

It might not be a whole lot different than Albion in terms of players being "encouraged" to visit the PVP zones.

Trying to define what makes a sandbox style game is nigh impossible, almost no one will agree.

I feel EVE is a great example of one,  others call it a theme park, many like you compare games to UO or SWG and say if a MMO doesn't contain most of their designs, its not a sandbox.

The deeper I got into the game the more shallow it felt.  Game is just as linear as WoW just focuses around pvp.

Because this is one of the worst games you can play, I was reading a forum post yesterday on their forums, and some comments on their news sections, Sandbox Interactive is a German based company, and they censor everything that negatively points back to their game in a negative way.

They refuse to answer the questions that have been posted but instead remove them.

a.) Why did Sandbox Interactive know about gold sellers who do fraud during beta, they banned some peoples accounts for it, but instead they launched the game 2 months later after knowing it was going to be an issue and allowed the frauds to take place rather than putting in protections such as removing direct gold trade, and incidents like "The Iron Bank" drama and other guilds took advantage of this cheating, they could have prevented it and they knew about it.

    > The developers refuse to answer this especially Korn, the administrator, who gives the orders to all the staff to remove posts for pointing this out rather than locking, and addressing the issue, its like they don't want people to know.

b.) Why this game company threatend on a in game welcome screen message to ban anyone who accepted in game items if they came from illegitimate sources for example if I do fraud myself and gave the items to others making myself look like I was just a kind person helping a newbie I can get that person banned or could have this is just unacceptable of a game company.

I do not recommend Albion Online to anyone for these reasons of censorship, developers kicking people from the game without full evidence, and even threatening its playerbase, and this isn't even addressing the in game issues of unbalance, and cheating with zoom-hacks etc, a game with no anti-cheat.

Black Desert Online, for starters is a halfway decent game if you got a 1070+ or 1080ti card and can run in max graphics it looks awesome, and there are other games too like Ashes, or Crow Fall which are being developed by the same developers from Star Wars Galaxies yep they will for sure be better sandbox based games.

sorry for my rant, I wish this game was great I don't really like to say negative things but given a friend tried to drag me into Albion and I saw this stuff for myself...
