Have you or would you ever play an X-Rated MMO?

I've come across them while touring the internet but never signed up to play one, except I once discovered Second Life has or had a massive underground role play for that sort of thing hidden away on some sort of island.  I've also come across the occasional adult mod designed for regular MMO's.

Apologies in advance if this violates a forum rule.  Just delete.  Thanks.

Have seen adverts for them too, never understood the appeal to be honest.

My needs are met IRL, but I don't begrudge anyone who enjoys this kind of stuff - unless it's like anime lolli girls, I mean, you might not be a pedo, but you also might be. So that's creepy.

Well, all X means is that it's unsuitable for children and is meant for adults of a certain age and up.

So it could mean explicit language (a lot of it) a lot of graphic violence or sexual content.

So would I? Well, if it was x for language or violence and that violence made sense to the IP.

I have absolutely no issues with sexual content but if a game's focus was sexual content I wouldn't be interested as for me that's something I relegate to my personal relationships. I don't need/want a video game for that.

One of my main reasons for playing MMOs is to be part of a virtual world with a vibrant community. The best communities are the ones that are most diverse - gender, ages, sexuality, home country etc - but I would imagine that an X-Rated MMO would have quite a narrow community, so wouldn't appeal.

However, if the X rating was just from the violence, I'd consider it - I would like more blood and gore in my games (and films) to bring them up to something a bit more realistic.

I think Second Life's "hidden away massive underground scene" is not an MMO

Was Scarlet Blade such a game? I don't remember its rating. It sure was laughable and goofy though.

I'll be in the boat with some others here and say I wasn't even aware that was a "thing". Is there an XMMORPG.com site I'm unaware of?

Interesting post. Honestly, though, I've never heard of anything like that, nor am I interested. If we can't "get it right" in mainstream, then I just don't see how a subculture could.

No offense to you but the idea of "getting off" never even crossed my mind to the topic on hand, You sound a bit uptight about sexuality though. I think to most playing a xrated MMO or game is more about the laughs than anything else. Its like saying someone who enjoys Grand Theft auto wants to go out into RL and go on a shooting spree.

There used to be hundreds of these in the early 2000s.

This is when virtual chat rooms were popping up. Naturally, people were exploring just how far this can go - having avatars do X-rated things with each other was one avenue. Most of the purely X-rated "sex" games were very shallow in content, so I did not find them appealing at all. Chat room games in general had little content to begin with, so the main appeal was to meet people and make friends. The downside of an X-rated chat room is that the other party only really uses one hand to chat, hence it's more difficult to actually get to know the person.

I was really interested in teen-rated chatroom spaces instead. I was in my teens back then and these games often had other features complementing the chatting - racing, exploration, property, paintball, music, etc. The idea was to make friends and have fun activities to do with them. I think this made much more sense. You could build stable communities and the game would have longevity.

That's probably why SecondLife was the one successful social game with a strong X-Rated community. It has a lot of additional features besides the adult stuff, which has the potential of retaining players over time. The open source nature of the game also ensures there is virtually no cap on the amount of content - anyone can add their own stuff.

No, not really because it is against my moral but because I believe that games like Scarlett Blade are terrible and try to hide that with sex.

Now, if there was an adult game that actually were good things might be different but nudity and sex does not make a game "adult". Put in some fun, high difficulty and a pinch of grit and we can discuss it again.

My general rule is that the more a computer game focus on X-rated combat the worse it is because a good game will sell anyways, and in fact sell to far more people. Something terrible on the other hand need a gimmick like that to survive, there are of course other gimmicks bad games try as well but I doubt it helps that much, Scarlett blade is dead after all and the only online adult game I can think off that really earned money is Second Life and that just ain't my kind of game but I assume it does what it does far better then most others.

    So do I, so do I.  :p

OT, nothing wrong with violence, sex or coarse language as long as it fits the story/setting. Every other form of entertainment uses it, with great succes sometimes.

They'd be too grindy and most players could only grind them in 90 second spurts.

Awesome thread - "No! Because i have lots of sexual intercourse with totally real women... i swear!"  :D

On a serious note - no i haven't tried any, but i've ran across some on the interwebs and they always looked shit so i didn't bother. If a AAA studio can't make a proper MMO to keep my attention, i doubt whoever is making these can.

Nudity, Gore, Sex, Blood... all fine and I'd applaud some more adult themes in games (and movies with that PG13 nonsense these days).

One of those clunky porn MMO's that have nothing to offer other than roleplay and sex acts: No, I wouldn't enjoy them. Good that they exist for the people that do though.

I must admit I used nude mods for L2, the original Dragon's Age, and Skyrim.  Entertaining for a short while but lost interest and ended up uninstalling.  It seems nowadays I just want to adventure, quest, and kill stuff.

I'm with @Loke666 here, a good game will always sell whether it has sex/explicit language or not, and i would certainly play one whenever possible.

What we have seen lately is mediocre games (at best) using nudity as a selling point to get some attention. On the other hand, more serious developers don't want to limit their potential customer base by making an x-rated title and shutting youngsters and players with more conservative mind sets out of their product.

There's still a huge market for these kind of games, tho, especially when VR gets a bit more advanced and more common and gets within a reach of ordinary people. Internet pr0n is watched everyday by how many people again?

I don't even know of any of these, so I can't quote any for reference, but I'd imagine the general premise of adventure, quest and kill are still there, they just have different meaning in the context :)

I could see this working where the genre was right -- For example I could see a vampires MMO being X-Rated.

The problem comes where it is gratuitous and not natural.
