Has mmorpg.com been hacked?

Or did they sell their e-mail database?
Today I received an e-mail spam on an e-mail address that I only use for this site. But, of course, when I am the only one that received e-mail spam at an address exclusively used for this site, the answer to both questions must be: no.

It takes one to know one.

I just checked the email address I use for this site and I haven't gotten anything unusual so far.

I've got a feevah, and the only prescription... is more cowbell.

Sometime spammers send out a ton of email addresses that appear to be automatically generated.  I've gotten some that were sent to me because they were close to my email address but not the exact same.

Wow, Members: 3,443,873 = $27,550,984 not bad for a days work.  Or was that $8 for all of them?

We never sell our users email addresses.  We have been hacked in the past but that was over 6 years ago at this point.  I am looking into this now.

For a site like this with no money on the line, I'd assume that they've been hacked and whatever you entered is in the hands of cyber criminals just on general principle.  That's partly because sites that don't have money on the line don't have strong incentives to secure their site, so some of them don't.

If this site were to be hacked, the hackers likely wouldn't do anything that made it obvious that they hacked this site.  Rather, they'd take your username and password (if it isn't secured well) and see if you happened to use the same one on Paypal or Amazon or some other site where they can do some real harm if they have control of your account.

The solution is, don't enter sensitive data on this site.  Apart from forum moderators or site administrators, there's no reason to.  It's okay to use the same password on this site that you do on other sites like forums where a hacker can't really do much to you if he gets access to your account.  But don't use the same password here that you do on sites where it would be big trouble if you get hacked, such as your bank or anywhere that you enter a credit card.

Now, they might do a decent job of securing their site.  But there's no way for end users to know that, as even if they do get hacked, we'll probably never find out.  It's not like how if your credit card gets stolen, you get fraudulent charges pretty quickly and then know that something is wrong.

I'd be mindful of those ad recover "retarget" ads. They might be doing a little more than retargeting.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/  If you don't want to put in your email address there's an option to view their database of compromised sites at the bottom.

Had the same thing happen with me last year. Registered with a highstreet bank for a credit card and used an email address i specifically made just for this aplication. Few weeks later im getting spam email about re-filling my viagra prescription. Obviously banks cant be trusted but in this case i highly doubt they sold my info to a third party.

All it takes is one rogue employee with access who wants to make some extra money.  Or clicked on something they shouldn't have, or found a flash drive in the parking lot and plugged it into their work computer...
