There are way too many MMOs these days. No, scratch that. There are way too many terrible, no-good, self-playing, web-based clones of clones MMOs these days.

    Good article Bill. I agree with you, these web based MMO's and such have really stagnated and set back the genre.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV

    Isnt this just another if I dont like it you can't either post? Dont get me wrong I think all those games suck but how is this any different than when we see someone say gw2 for example sucks and is bad for the genre.

    Retired people like them.  They just sit there and watch them do the work for them... not much different than sitting in a park and watching the pigeons eat.  I know this is true because my Dad spends 18 hours a day doing just that... watching his 3D toon do stuff for him.  He couldn't handle WoW... got lost trying to find his corpse all the time... I don't think he managed to get past level 5... yeah, I know, how hard is that?  Exactly.  Games like this are made for him.  With the ever growing population of retired folks, there's a mint to be had... it's either this or the casinos.

    I agree with Bill on the quizzical thinking of, "who's playing these?" and how are they seeing enough money that others continue to spring up everyday?

    It's a little ironic that you would rant about this while the site actively supports R2 games with key promotions. I get that the editorial opinions of the writing staff differ from that of the main site itself, but still there is a guild by association going on.

    It's kind of like the ArsTechnica rant I read earlier this week. The auther complains about text only buttons and all caps menus amongst other things. He even goes so far as to say people at Apple and Microsoft should be fired over those decisions. What does Ars have? All caps menus and text only buttons. I get that the author isn't the site designer, but the parable of the plank and the splinter applies here.

    I've tried some R2 games before and they are horrid. They do nearly play themselves. On the other hand I play Aura Kingdom which has an auto-destination feature and the game is really fun. I'm sure when Destiny pops we'll be able to find some horrible design decisions and some nefarious monetization ploys there as well. Fun is in the eye of the beholder.

    Well I haven't heard of Therian Saga before, but from what I'm seeing about Archeage the past few weeks, that wouldn't be very hard to do. I have a feeling unless huge changes are made to Archeage and it's monetization platform, Trion will be in for a wild ride.

     

    I'll reserve judgement till I get my hands on Archeage though after release. I'm just interested enough to pick it up and try it, but if ganking is rampant it's going to have the same problems every other open world PvP game has had in NA. It will be interesting to see what happens with Archeages as it likely will shape future releases in NA across the genre based on it's success.

    I think there is more than just browser MMO's putting the stranglehold on the industry. It's nice to see a marketing site like mmorpg.com recognize that undercutting no matter how it's done is leaving the industry in poor health.

    Yet isn't it amazing how TESO got such rave reviews on this site?

    A bland dull boring MMO with no innovation, and thus a copy of every other MMO, that's filled with BOTs which is as self playing as you can get!

    I guess I've never played such a game since I've never experienced this self playing mechanic that is being mentioned.

    Doesn't sound terribly entertaining, but there must be a market for these games somewhere.

    I resent the implication that they are designed for "seniors", maybe its really lots of younger gamers who are too busy on their Facebook or Smart Phones  to actually divert enough attention to actually play a game.

    This is absolutely amazing, and voices the things Ive been saying and feeling for years as well. What would be awsome to see though, since I dont think this will sway any sites (even this one) from advertising and promoting these games and publishers like R2Games, is to have a new identifier on them. Instead of just listing them all as MMO and possibly confusing those who dont know any better, call them Auto-play, or Auto-path, or Self-playing MMO, or something to recognize at first glance that its not worth taking the time to download or install. 

     

    I mean, already as soon as I see R2 anywhere in the description I immediately ignore it, but something to identify all games as such, not just the one publisher.

    Disagree.

    In many of the MMOs  and RPGs today that I suspect you consider good, are not a lot of players just taking the extra step of looking up the quest/mob/location and manually going from point to point.

    I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that U/I development was finding ways to say 'Yes' as often as possible to whatever the user tries to do.  I would argue, if there are auto-playing games surviving, then there are players asking for this functionality.

    Regardless, I do share the hope some developer out there transforms our current mass-clone generation of cash generating games into something fresh.

    I'm actually surprised to hear this kind of thing coming from MMORPG.  I've felt for a while that they were getting a little soft on the industry and giving just about everything that comes out a "thumbs up".  But I'm happy to see that they (at least Bill) aren't just giving a free pass to every so-called "MMO" project that rears its ugly head these days.

    The genre is overdone, and mostly overfilled with filler, clones, and garbage that completely lacks any sort of innovation.  We need better and more interesting games to play, and not just more of the same.  And if more industry media professionals can stand up for players in this subject, maybe we can turn the direction of things around.

    One of the main problems is that the market is over saturated with crappy games. New age now, with players demanding more realistic , social involving type of games.  Maybe a game where you can have a futuristic house, social relations with other people around you without been forced to do stuff together unless you desire and the other persons do as well, like in real life, you do stuff alone and stuff with your partner and stuff with your friends.

    Games need to break the WoW mentality and develop as a global social game,  have space action and land action on an even balance, have social activities that help develop the sense of community, etc etc

    Before that this genre needs better and more interesting devs.Epic devs.

    Many devs for example  have tried to build new Masters of Orions,no chance.

    Can every company build cool MMO,no chance.

    I think Bill is just trying to get a little street cred back by pandering to the cynics out there. Still the false gw2 sales numbers stands without an asterisk added or retraction. This site desperately needs a managing editor.

    You had me till you said New age now, with players demanding more realistic , social involving type of games.

    Social is one of the things they don't want...must be new to this site.
