Rumors Suggest Crytek in Troubled State

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-23-crysis-developer-crytek-claims-bankrupt-report-is-false

Crysis developer Crytek has denied claims it is on the verge of bankruptcy.

A recent report from German magazine GameStar claimed Crytek, which has its headquarters in Frankfurt, was in financial trouble and that the development of Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome had been a "disaster".

Our colleagues at Eurogamer Germany looked into the report, and gave me the following translation:

"'The vultures are circling already,' so says a leading employee of one of the large publishers. Companies like this have already started making offers to the most talented people at Crytek, to hire them away. Such a brain drain can become dangerous for any studio, even a financially stable one.

"A takeover of Crytek would be interesting for a company, that could use the development-experience of the Crytek and doesn't want to build up such experience itself. That is why the Belarus F2P-giant Wargaming is rumoured to be a potential buyer.

"When you are reading this, there is hope that Crytek has managed to avoid disaster. A new source of money, said Avni Yerli [one of the managing directors], is in sight. When we called him in early June, the contract had not yet been signed, but will be in a short while. 'Not all is good. Our transition to become a F2P-studio had been painful. But all that is now behind us.'"

You can stop being excited now.

Perhaps this can serve as a cautionary tale for future video game developers.

Only push the tech envelope as far as the market will allow.

I think they will be ok, other companies like Square Enix and Capcom have been in far worse situations and multiple times through out their history and now they are some of the richest game companies.  Plus that article only tells me that they are still developing Homefront 2 with the team from Ryse 2 and the fact that they recently showed a walkthrough at E3.  Every game company goes through these things.

I really hope they get through their problems because regardless of how people feel about them I am a huge fan of Crytek.

Hunted: Horrors Of The Gilded Age is the game I am looking foward to.

Crytek was missing payroll 3 months ago, and employees were already applying for other jobs at that time.   Crytek is probably done.

Their problem isn't that they pushed the tech envelope. Just the opposite is true. They founded their company on the principal that they would push the tech envelope and then they let console tech limit them horribly. If they had of continued what they started with Far Cry 1 and Crysis 1 they probably wouldn't be in trouble now. They let console tech hold them back from showing what their engine could really do. The cautionary tale here is if you're going to claim you're going to push the boundaries of what new tech can do you better do it and not just push out console trash like everyone else.

What the heck are you talking about?

The only Crytek game that has had some kind of success in the past several years is Ryse, a console exclusive.

If Crysis 2 and 3 had been PC exclusive and pushed tech even further the sales would have been much lower.

Pushing expensive tech to chase a miniscule segment of PC gamers finally caught up to Crytek and this is the price of their hubris.

And now Homefront is even being developed at all

All the Crysis Games had better reviews than Ryse and Crysis 1 and 2 had more sales than Ryse, Crysis 3 almost the same amount in sales and thats only counting the sales on the 360 version not all plarforms put together.

    Eurogamer:

    Crysis 3: 7/10 Crysis 1: 9/10 Ryse: 5/10

    Metacritic:

    Crysis 3: 76 Crysis 1: 91 Ryse: 60

    IGN:

    Crysis 3: 8.4 Ryse: 7.6

    Gamespot:

    Crysis 3: 7.5 Ryse: 4

    Gametrailers

    Crysis 3: 9 Ryse: 7

    Sales Figures: Crysis 2 (Xbox 360) Global 1.27 million // Crysis 3 (Xbox 360) Global 0.80 million

    Ryse : 0.91 million

it says that the Ryse was a disaster and I'm not surprised they didn't sell well since it's only limited to Xbox One which already is in much lower unit numbers than PS4 because they decided to just limit the number of countries they'll launch Xbox One :D

Not sure if they'll recover so easily especially after people are already leaving the company since they have no money to pay them.

Uh, no one no where said Ryse was a disaster.

    From the article you linked:

"Despite the staff departures, our source said that following the cancellation of Ryse 2, many developers from the Frankfurt office – where the sequel to the Xbox One launch title was to be made – are now working with Crytek UK on Homefront."

If Ryse was not such a disaster they would not have cancelled Ryse 2 and send its entire team to make Homefront 2,  and the first homefront was not that successful either but apparently more successful than Ryse which kind of tells you something.

"Not only that, but Gamestar claims that the development of Ryse was "catastrophic" for the studio. Just mere months before its release, the game was severely behind and Crytek was able to complete it with additional manpower. And from what we’ve seen thus far, Ryse did not sell as well as Crytek hoped (especially for a console exclusive)."

Other than all this, it only takes common sense to see the obvious.  Bad Reviews from every reviewer + Low Sales + Company in financial crisis right after their latest games release =

Man some of you are just obsessed with trying to put down the xbox one anytime you can, kinda silly to tell you the truth.    You go so far to turn words around.  They said the development was  "catastrophic" not the game.  The development was a "disaster" not the game. In six months according to your vgcharts they sold almost a million copies.   Almost as much as C2 and already beat C3.  So to try and put the blame on Ryse and turning around the quotes is pretty ignorant.

Please try and do some research...here is the real reason Ryse 2 was cancelled.

"Ryse 2 was cancelled because of a conflict between Crytek and Microsoft over who would own the rights to the franchise. In exchange for funding Ryse 2's development, Microsoft wanted to take over theRyse intellectual property, something Crytek couldn't agree to, so both parties decided not to continue.[6]"

    Bad reviews from every reviewer?

    A solid? is bad

    Good is bad?

    http://www.gamezone.com/games/ryse-son-of-rome

Average user rating on gamestop is a 8.3 is that bad?

Now feel free to turn your light bulb on and try to understand all that.  And also turn off the glowing, bright, blinking xb1 hater light its showing like crazy on your threads, it really hurts your credibility.

You realize your only comparing crysis 3 and 2 sales from only one system right?

    PS3 0.73 mill, 360 0.80 mill, PC 0.45 mill  Total Crysis 3 Sales: 1,980,000 Copies Sold  550,684 sold in 4 Days from Release date February 19th 2013

    Crysis 2: PS3 1.20 mil, 360 1.27 mill, PC 0.70 mill Total Crysis 2 Sales: 3,170,000 About a million sold in 2 weeks from release date March 11th 2011

Crysis 3 sold 297,825 on the 360 within 4 days from release

If it took Ryse that long only to sell a little less than a million than thats bad

Ryse sold badly compared to other Xbox One Exclusives like Dead Rising 3 which was 1 million in less than a month from release.  Pretty much compared to majority of AAA titles Ryse sold poorly.

Do I have to link all the bad reviews that Ryse got again?

Ryse was just a pretty game and that was the only good thing about it.  The first time I played it I ran into a bug within 10 minutes at the place where I was fighting beside his father that made me restart the game because the Father froze in place.

And  no one is attacking xbox, only a fanboy like you see it that way.  We are talking about Ryse in comparison to Crysis series here so I dont know where you got "Man some of you are just obsessed with trying to put down the xbox one anytime you can" from.

No you don't need to link ALL the reviews,  you said EVERY REVIEWER GAVE BAD REVIEWERS.  Now the only reason anyone would lie about that claim would mean they have an agenda.

You make a claim Ryse  2 was canceled because Ryse was a "disaster" .  I posted the real reason.    The only reason someone would post uninformed accusation is because they have an agenda.

No you are accusing Ryse as the reason a company is failing.  You are using quotes out of context, you are coming up with inaccurate assumptions as to why Ryse 2 got canceled.  You claim ALL reviews were bad.     I was just  correcting all your inaccuracies.   Based on your inaccuracies I came to the conclusion you are just a xb hater.  My apologies if all your inaccuracies were purely accidental and or from lack of knowledge on the subject.

    Eurogamer:

    Crysis 3: 7/10 Crysis 1: 9/10 Ryse: 5/10

    Metacritic:

    Crysis 3: 76 Crysis 1: 91 Ryse: 60

    IGN:

    Crysis 3: 8.4 Ryse: 7.6

    Gamespot:

    Crysis 3: 7.5 Ryse: 4

    Gametrailers

    Crysis 3: 9 Ryse: 7

You can go to all those sites and see for your self, and I already posted that above too

Im not saying it is failing because of Ryse alone, im saying is it just a coincidence? Im saying it is more than likely the primary factor out of whatever other factors thats also causing them financial troubles, if you just connect the dots from all the information gathered so far.  This whole debate started from this comment:

"The only Crytek game that has had some kind of success in the past several years is Ryse, a console exclusive. " From Xiaoki.

By the way I bought a Xbox One on release day.  I got a Wii U and PS4 as well.  Back in the day I had SNES and Genesis, I have had every single xbox console too.

Yeah that's not ALL reviewed ever on Ryse that's what you said.  Yep I've owned them all.  Currently have a ps3, xb360 and a PC.

But the problem as I've stated twice and if you need I can state again...Your dots were inaccurate.  So connecting inaccurate dots will not get you to an accurate conclusion.  That's all I'm saying.

    A NEW source of money?

That sounds like they need outside help in managing it's financial ,also tells me they are done if this is the case.

If the products cannot support this company why even bother except to keep leeching the funds to fill the big shots pocket books and to keep leeching the banks until finally they shut them down or force a sale.

IMO the rumor is true and the potential buyer is leaked information that was probably bought information.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

All those sales data I linked pretty much says it all.  910,000 in 6 months is terrible compared to each crysis game and for a single player AAA game especially for a next gen release title.  A triple A single player title usually makes that much in less than a month like Dead Rising 3.  Killzone Shadowfall released in November 15th and made about 2.1 million by January 15th

Forza 5 passed 1 million in about 2 and a half months from release and racing genre isnt as popular as action genre

So you use vg charts for Ryse but not for your ps4 games?  Is that correct?  Everyone knows vg charts is flawed and about as inaccurate as you.  According to vg charts killzone has sold 1.76 million units as of Jun '14 worldwide.  In order to have a credible discussion please try to use credible sources and or use the same flawed inaccurate source during the entire conversation, and not change sources to enhance your already questionable views.

It's obvious you are just trying to hide all the inaccuracies I've pointed out that you have made.  And there really is no point in continuing a conversation with you, as you just change your sources to help your agenda.

I just clicked on joystick cuz that was the first thing that popped in google, i wasnt thinking about any agenda and all that, your putting too much thought into it.

    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=killzone+shadow+fall+sales+figures

vgcharts didnt even show up in the search

By the way Sony them selves announced that number

Here are two different websites that are credible also

    http://www.vg247.com/2014/01/29/killzone-shadow-fall-sales-exceeded-2-1-million-units-as-of-january-15/

"Sony has announced global sales of PlayStation 4 exclusive Killzone Shadow Fall exceeded 2.1 million units as of January 15"

    http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/29/killzone-shadow-fall-global-sales-top-2-1-million/

"That figure accounts for physical Blu-ray discs and downloads sold through the PlayStation Store."

I dont think vgcharts counts playstation store downloads

By the way I didnt link Dead Rising 3 from vgcharts either and thats a xbox one game, in the comments above.  I used this link http://www.polygon.com/2014/1/22/5333686/dead-rising-3-hits-1m-sales-milestone-within-a-month you saying polygon not credible either? Link straight from capcom: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e140122.html

You dont have to believe me, but all these sources are known to be credible, vgcharts, polygon, eurogamer.  I used so many different links from different sources to prove my point through out this entire thread.  You havent shown me anything to prove your point about ryse which has always been the main topic.  All youve done is try to discredit me and telling me im the one with the agenda.  I put the time in to get numbers and data as accurately as I could from different websites.  Have you even at least played Ryse like I did?

Instead of attacking my credibility, try supporting your own argument of the topic.

One last thing this is from the same article Xiaoki linked

"And from what we’ve seen thus far, Ryse did not sell as well as Crytek hoped (especially for a console exclusive)."

Why is it so hard for you to believe that when a company makes a big budget triple A game and doesnt make profit out of it, they sometimes go into a financial crisis.  You see this all the time happen to mmos in the same situation right here in this website

You even tried to argue against me in the oculus rift thread.  And that had nothing to do with Xbox or anything.  Its clear you got something against me, and your telling me im the one with the agenda?  Please go through my comment history and find something where I bashed on xbox with bias opinions.

I doubt Crytek is going anywhere. A few of their studios might close, but the company will remain.

I think the reason they started to go into Consoles was because of their Game Engine business. A lot of the developers they would be working with would want console compatibility. Us on the PC side of things would scoff at the console, but to some there are a lot of sales there. Another avenue is mobile which is the main reason why Unity has been successful. So for a developer like Crytek that already has the capability to release on console, why not?

However, as a developer you always have to question releasing for the console because there really isn't a lot of money in it unless you are a big publisher like EA who can skirt around console fees. My assumption is Microsoft paid them a lot of money to develop for the Xbox in the magnitude where they would not lose money.

I didnt use the vgcharts for Dead Rising 3 either, but you didnt say anything about that. Yet you chose throw accusations the second I mentioned a PS4 game.  hmmmm
