LoA: A Song of Ice and Fire? Really?

Jean-Luc_PicardJean-Luc_Picard La BarreMember Posts: 5,744 Epic

It's one of the actual "skins" for this site's forums.

Do the Asians really lack that much imagination to sell their games now that they have to copy the G.R.R. Martin book series title? And you guys on this website accept this? And don't tell me it's a coincidence, when we are right into the fourth season of the TV series. Exactly the same title, they didn't even bother to just invert the two elements.

Yep that's a bit of a rant, but this is just pathetic. I guess money is good no matter where it comes from.

Or maybe George will just think that imitation is the highest form of flattery... who knows.

I'm pretty sure this site has absolutely no standards or restrictions on advertisers, as long as the check clears.  Kind of sad, really.

The background images for League of Angels on this site actually look good but all the girls look straight out of all the popular mobas out there. And its not the fist time R2Games do this stuff. They copy a lot of stuff from all over the place and then release a bagillion pay to win browser games one after the other. They are desperate for money.

Well, at least they aren't using screen captures from other games like they used to do (though I think they still do that elsewhere. Not sure).  Never saw the reason for that when the game's own artworks are good enough already.  ....not that I recommend the game (in fact, I really REALLY warn you to stay far far far far away from it)

I'm not sure the site has any real say over the content of the ads, just whether they'll accept the advertising dollars or not.  That said, I had a bit of a facepalm myself when I saw the tagline on that LoA ad.  At least go with "A Saga of Flame and Snow" or something.  As to the titillation in the background, it doesn't really bother me.  I'm far more scandalized by the irredeemably nonsensical posts that seem to flourish here; OP's not included, of course.

ETA: It literally reads "A Song of Ice and Fire" which is far different than just using those two words in concert.  It's an unflinching copy-paste from something that has enormous popularity and, IMO, shows a huge lack of creativity.

Confused me personally. I almost clicked on it thinking it had something to do with the books.

Then I saw it said League of Angels and was like "nope."

Whatever though, I'm not surprised. I mean they did advertise scarlet blade pretty heavily and imo, that's about as low as you can go. At least these skins look pretty cool, really nice and high quality art for most of them. The one with the fire lady and ice one on the sides looks like crap though.

Whether the name was intentionally misleading or not I don't really care. Fire and ice are put together in way too many things as it is and everyone seems to love the concept of opposites so there's really no way you can say they specifically did it to copy the books.

What's with the dig against Asians? One company copies a book title (who even knows whether it was an "asian" who created said add mind you)..., so now no asian has an imagination?

Maybe they decided that copy and paste was their best hope of avoiding broken English (their previous ads have sometimes used "You Landwalkers!" as a complete sentence.), and can't read English well enough to know whether it's copyrighted.

The problem isn't Asians in general so much as that the company hired someone (of unknown nationality, but presumably not an English-speaking country) to write English language ads without being fluent in English.

Gotta be honest, the first time I heard that the books that the Game of Thrones series were taken from were called "The Song of Fire and Ice" I thought of this...

Which was actually a pretty good movie even though even it stole its bad guys look from Elric of Melnibone.

Although I do have to agree with Foo, you should have said GTArcade and not Asians.

It was a good movie . The rotoscoping was subpar though, well except for the part where she was bathing in the pond.

I still remember the towards the end when he shoots the arrow at the guy and he does a quick dodge and wags his finger and says something like "I dont think so".

(Heavy Metal and Tarna is still the best by far)

The above examples are completely irrelevant to the argument.

The OP wasn't questioning the fact that both the words "Ice" and "Fire" appear in the game tag. What's being questioned is that the exact phrase "A Song of Ice and Fire" is being used. That exact phrase just happens to be associated with a widely known and very popular TV series based on a series of books associated with the same name.

It may be complete coincidence that their copywriters came up with this exact phrase. It is possible (although highly unlikely) that the copywriter has no idea of which TV series are currently major worldwide hits.

Hopefully, some fan of the GoT series will send an email to HBO and/or Martin's publishers to lodge a complaint about this blatant copyright breach.

You forgot to mention that the blue icy girl in that add is a direct rip off from the character Elsa in the disney movie Frozen.

    Super classy.

That and Wizards are two of my favorite movies ever, so many big names in fantasy art behind that production.

Aside from the fact that 'Fire and Ice' has been used a thousand times before Martin ever did, you cannot copyright a title or phrase. In some cases you can trademark them, but that is unlikely here.

Except that the phrase was "A Song of Ice and Fire" which is very different from the generic "fire and ice."  The order is important since most uses would put fire before ice, just as you did.  More importantly, the fact that it includes the word "song" leaves very little doubt as to the source.

There's just no way that was an accident.

I know right. The mods come and edit some of the posts, but they leave the OP's post that is demeaning to an entire race.

    Precisely.

They didn't just use "Ice and Fire" like those other titles listed here, they used the precise, exact same sentence.

    http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire

The inclusing of the word "song" makes it obvious that it is definitely not a coincidence.

And there was absolutely no racist intention in my post, I actually work with China daily and don't have a problem with Asian people. I love their food too. Thanks to the mods for understanding that.

But there seems to be a lot of plagiarism in those countries, not only for games (they also tried to copy WoW, among others), but also for clothing and other stuff. Want a fake Rolex watch? You can bet it comes from Asia 99% of the times. And gold farming... The fault doesn't come from 99% of the Asians, but from the 1% of greedy rich company managers who exploit those poor people to produce cheap imitated stuff.

Hope the precision will make those outraged people feel better now.
