So... Are Melee Builds Kinda Useless In PVP

FlyByKnightFlyByKnight Member EpicPosts: 3,967

I'm pretty new, and been really liking what I've seen from Arcehage.

I've been noticing melee builds are pretty bad when you wish to defend yourself or even get the drop on people (in the know).  I've seen only 1 leash skill, and 2 skills (across 2 decks) that cover any type of ground in the melee decks.

I understand Archeage isn't about 1v1 in general, but it very much is when you're out doing things like gathering, mining or questing.  What does one do when they encounter a ranged attacker?  They just stun/sleep you and kite you to death while all your gap closing skills are on some long ass cool down.

So... are melee builds kinda useless in PVP?  Would appreciate some insight from more experienced players.

"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"

If you are melee it is up to you how you plan your melee.

You have 3 trees with which to plan how you want to go about things.

The smart player has a tree for stun breaks and stuns, a tree for heals and heal over times, and a melee tree with a few more stuns along with damage build up and major damage.

So basically you come upon an enemy and start up some dps.

When you seen damage being done to you simply stun, sleep, bubble them and heal/heal over time.

    Then re-engage.

If you get stunned then use one of your stun breaks.

There are several fun skills in melee that allow you to crank out amazing damage if you know what you are doing and how to combo.

No some of them are pretty good.  I am playing a 2H Combat with burst and stealth that recks in solo PvP.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

LOL.... Sounds like Rift PvP builds all over again. Large majority opting for range builds.

I am very interested in this thread as I only play melee toons.

    All feedback appreciated.

    Thanks

I've only made it to level 10, but I was thinking about a shadow/archery/occult build. Would that work well? I haven't really worked into the skills deeply yet and certainly haven't tried them out.

In short, Yes they are useless. I've been playing since KR open beta. After 1-2 months of the game being released in the endgame really does just turn into ranged vs ranged small or large groups of people if you want any chance of winning, Whoever stuns first wins in almost every instance. Anyone that wishes to tell you different probably play tank ezreal in league of legends. Enjoy the game though, it's fun regardless.

I am sort of old and can't twitch, but enjoy these types of games.

If I want to just gather, craft and have some type of defense, you are saying that I would need to go ranged?

I did spend the $50.00 in support of the game, so I can't play until beta.

I wish they would allow me to download the client seeing that I paid them almost 2 weeks ago.

I don't expect to be able to play, but it would be nice to be able to download the client prior to beta.

This game doesn't use the new style of active combat. It is still rooted in the non-twitch gameplay of the hotbar.

As far as your defense goes there will be plenty depending on your chosen style.

There is a fun class combo called Predictor

    It uses Devotion/Finesse/Will

Devotion for heals, heal over times, some damage.

Finesse for stealth, dps, being able to outmaneuver your target.

Will for breaking stuns and making immune to stuns for a time.

As far as the client goes, it may be updated before Beta starts. The more people that have the client now, the more will need to patch. There are going to be more servers opening for Beta since many more people will be able to join at that price point. Having the client on your system would do nothing at this time except take up hard disk space and waist internet capacity for nothing. It will come soon enough. Also you can support the game once it's released by subscribing and paying monthly for it as well and get some extra labor points per day as a benefit.

Thank you for your response concerning play styles.

Your response as to why the client is unavailable makes no sense.

How am I wasting internet capacity  by downloading the game that I paid for  and waiting for the date that I am allowed to play?

Please don't be concerned about my hard disk space. I am quite capable of managing my space.

As stated in my original post, I paid $50.00 almost 2 weeks ago. I would like to download the client as soon as possible.

    My internet may be slow.

Who are you? Why would you respond to me in such a manner?

If you are affiliated with this game in anyway , then maybe I should request a refund.

The beta client doesn't exist yet. When it does is when beta will start.
  • GdemamiGdemami Member EpicPosts: 12,342

If you mean melee as based on close range weapon instead of magic, there are no "melee builds" per say.

There is only 1 melee skill tree
There is only 1 stealth/ranged/melee skill tree
There is only 1 shield skill tree

So as you can see, there are no options for any sort of "building up" your skill deck.

The problem of the game is that there is way too much damage overall and absolutely no drawbacks. If you then go melee, you give up for an advantage of range but get nothing in return.

It is just very dull skill/combat system.

all builds right now revolve around burst. if a mage gets the opener on you , you will most likely die. if 2h melee stun locks you, you will most likely die and archers destroy if they get the jump on you aswell. most my 1 v 1s last 5-20 seconds.

    Level 50 archer.

every class in AA has its anti class.

There r plenty of good melee combinations.

around 10  for me is plenty, and melee - close range combat.

Ah, if melee is close range magic for you, then ok but I wouldn't say that is what most people consider melee.

  • StarIStarI Member UncommonPosts: 987

As people have pointed out there are planty of combinations you can play as melee. You will want to have Battlerage at all time because that is what makes you melee dps if you wish to play as one.

But than there's still 2 other schools you can pick and round up yourself in different directions depending of how you want to play.

You can choose between having more CC, stealth, CC immunity, mobility, extra damage, some range dmg, be more biffy, support your group, ...

    Now back to OP question;

No, you are not useless as melee, however the bigger the group fight the harder it is  to survive the engagement.

People need NOT forget this is an mmorpg with:

    a) open world pvp (you can't script it, there will always be n-amount of options no matter how much you want your build to cover it all you won't)

    b) gear taht matters more than your build (for the most part)

    c) an  everchanging world - balancing and changing skills may always swing it's favour from one school to another

My advice is forget the refund if you plan to play this game. The pack you bought gives you 4 days headstart, a month of patron status and a few credits. Even if you dont know if you like the game or not i advice you to try out in full features and for that patron is need it.

Your Money your call, just give me my advice   :)

First off we have no official date for Beta start.
You may have been impulsive in your pre-purchase of the beta client since there is a shortage of this type of game made with this quality level.

I was talking about the company bandwidth not yours.

The hard drive space thing is obviously a personal choice. I know I have been involved in other game roll-outs as a tester and there were several versions over the course between alpha, beta, and release. I had to sometimes completely scrub the game from my pc to allow the new version to start. You may have had different experiences.

If you followed this game for a while, like I have you will know there is no beta client, servers, or anything else yet. Only 1 alpha server. They are probably hard at work getting the servers ready since June is coming soon and that is a projected time table, but not written in stone.

I am a long term gamer and do not work for the company in any capacity. I saw you throwing around the word garbage about my reply and it is not kind. Who are you to judge me? Are you one of them? They are everywhere...EVERYWHERE! Must go put more tin foil on my windows and walls now to block them out!

    lol :P

Archeage has a place for melee, but know that this mmo depends on guild / friends to get the most out of it.

I have seen builds that totaly molest range and i have seen casters 3 shotting melee.
If you have a healer at you side things get realy interesting and fun for melee.
sword and board can dish out good damage and block plenty of it.

In patch 1.0 hitpoints go up ! so big crits gets a chanse to be healed up instead of being insta gibbed.
This will make the game feel much more balanced.
But we do not know what Trion is going to implement from that patch so untill we see some more info on that its hard to gues what comes and what doesnt.

I will be making a sword and board tank, or a paladin kind of class as i love to heal and or switch to a diffent style if it suits our group.

Also you only realy need 1 character as time progress and you level up the other builds you can unlock any class and skill combination !

This mmo is prolly the 1st one i go play for a looong time.
All stuff i see and read about just makes me hungry for more :P
