Why do people consider Wildstar a childish game?

The real question is, how many people who like WS have called someone a WoW kiddie?

This is true in some cases, if you have a group of friends playing MMO's you will feel embarrassed to admit you like a game that the others don't like but in most cases I think people that see this game as childish look at it like watching children cartoons, its ok for about 5 minutes but there is no long term entertainment value for an adult there.

I would say WS is childish because its on par with Saturday morning cartoons, in all the videos I have seen it really does seem like they built it for teens and playing it would feel like its insulting my intelligence. The humor, the animations, the architecture all seem designed for a younger audience.

    I need "adult" targeted entertainment.

There is nothing wrong with designing a game this way, I am not bashing it at all, I bet WS will be a big money maker but to me it seems obvious that they designed it for teens. Which is actually a good idea if you think about it :) teens sitting in their basement playing all day because they don't have jobs and their parents willingly paying for the subscription to keep them out of trouble.

I m 39, i like the game and i will play it. If anyone feels the game is not his cup of tea can stay away. That simple.

Btw at least Carbine is not afraid of giving 7 day trial on launch. You can play it and decide if you like it or not. They will not grab your money (as others do) with a half finished game.

Eh... honestly my first impression of the game was that it felt like I was playing a potty-mouthed Pixar movie. Ive never been one to say "omg its too cartoony" but I dont really want to play  Pixar game either. WoW does have a ...brighter color palette but at least its animations and characters dont really act like theyre straight out of a Disney flick. Sound didnt help either, I just turned it off after a while and literally felt relieved (most BG music is fine though). Not to mention the really bad overall design they made with the tutorial levels which were kinda boring at times.

Luckily I gave it more of a chance and now love the game but it took 8-10 levels at least. The first impressions of the game arent really going to help sell it IMO.

I'll play it, but I was used to WOW's derpy graphics, so it's not a big change one way or another.

If I hadn't been accustomed to the style via WoW? No I'd never even looked at this past the second screenshot.

Obviously any thing that is cartoonish is for kids.  I mean look at Archer, Heavy Metal, Futurama, and South Park.

Obviously we are all entitled to our tastes and opinions, but I would say that anyone who dismisses something out of hand as "childish" based on how it is stylised is broadly quite ignorant, narrow minded, probably suffers from a low IQ, and almost certainly has limited prospects on their chosen career path. They'll probably die early, 40 - 50 ish, because they were doing one of the many bad "adult" things this world has to offer (probably from some form of VD).

  • EvelknievelEvelknievel Member UncommonPosts: 2,964

Cartoons are not just for kids, however when you got graphics looking like this, you're clearly looking for a certain majority of the bunch that love this type of graphic choice in their mmo.

  • IkifalesIkifales Member UncommonPosts: 305

I love the graphics and I am in my 40's, covered in tats, ride a Harley that is almost as old as me, play and listen almost exclusively to deathmetal/grindcore, a devout Christian, and I am geek! I still love Nintendo games and I watch cartoons with my kids.....so what, it's fun. Cartoony graphics are an awesome break from the real world.

Don't get me wrong - I love gritty, dark, realistic games as well...I love it all.

You can't put people in box, and you shouldn't put games in a box.

My only complaint about Wildstar is that while the overall world seems busy and noisy, the individual NPCs are very static like they are in SWTOR. That's one of the reasons I love ESO and even WoW, the NPC/player interaction.

    Why is that exactly?

    Excellent post Phertias,

Being a veteran MMO player, I cant wait for WS. I have played through beta and i am perfectly fine with the game in this state. 30-60 FPS constantly with everything maxed out  ( except for shadows which is on medium) and BETA so far has been really polished.

As for ESO, i played in the beta. IMO, its boring, dull and full of bugs. Its an EPIC FAIL by all means.

Again, it comes down to the graphics reminding us that it COULD be a great childish game. But it is not a great childish game. Children would only get to the easy-part of the end game and then quit.

Why does it bother me? Because people who have only tried WS for 10 minutes are accusing it for being childish in a negative manner even though it isnt. When I first tried WS I was impressed with everything (and as a tough MMORPG critic who have pratically tried every game, it was close to a first time), but when I looked at reviews on various websites, it was the ONLY reason that people didnt want to play it.

It was the only major reason I could find. Now when you look at other games, it is mostly something valid that is being the major flaud: TSW = Poor combat animations, Rift = Soulless combat and character, Guild Wars 2 = Poor PvE system, Vanguard = Poor game support and I could name many more with reasons that make sense. But a game being childish as its major flaud?

People accuse WoW of having cartoony graphics.

People accuse EvE of being a spreadsheet game.

such accusations seem to follow the strongest MMOs too. I wouldn't pay much attention to them, young one.

But Eve is a spreadsheet game.

The most profitable aspects of Eve involve spreadsheets. The reason why alliances go to war is to improve their profits when they use their spreadsheets.

I like how calling it childish makes you "insecure".  I don't remember who posted that in here, but ... wow.  This whole THREAD... wow.

Anyway, the game is not designed specifically FOR adults and frankly a lot of it reminds me of cartoons from the 80's I grew up on.  So if I was going to pick a side, I'd say much, much more childish than mature.  Does it really matter?

However, I would say the most mature thing about it is the ancient quest system.  That feature's growing fur at this point.

Wildstar is childish due to the graphics and humor it tries to enforce. That should be pretty clear to everyone.

Is childish a bad thing? Not if that is what you are going for. For me, it just doesn't look good enough for me to play.

  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332

I don't think i ever said it was childish but  being silly can go too far if done too often. What i said was the game is just really cheap and those cartoony graphics are done really cheap. This game is no better than a VERY small indie developer's effort with a very small budget.

There  was an occasion i said to myself, wow this sort of reminds me of RFO a very old free to play game.WS has that FREE look to it,all of it's assets are really low poly. There is  a way to do a low budget game with or without making cheap models/assets look at FFXI as an example.

If you have ever followed Blizzard and i know MANY have, they are famous for doing things cheap but somehow have a knack or a following to keep gamer's supporting them.Well this team is former Blizzard and it shows as real obvious. They have tried to use humor and solid marketing to bring in that support and imo it worked.I am too old school and been around too long to have marketing or silly ideas hook me in,i want a SOLID game that looks like it has EFFORT written into it.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Exactly.  Not everyone who calls the game childish is using it as an insult.  Should I call the game "mature"?  I don't know what disgruntled fans want from everyone else.  The game has a childish or maybe adolescent (if that makes you feel better) slant to its humor and gameplay, I swear I could watch something similar on Cartoon Network.  Even for a "cartoony" game it's hardly Adult Swim in there.

As for not being good enough, to me it has nothing to do with the aesthetics, it has more to do with the fact that the game doesn't even try to do anything new, and some people find that simply unforgivable.  It's good enough for me to play, but not to pay.  If it pops up in my email a year from now for 20 bucks or goes B2P, I'll think about it.

    Gonna go watch some Spongebob....

Oh and FYI, it is NOT clear to everyone.

And still graphics are one of the most important thing in video games.

But they are not the most important part of a game. A video game can have the best graphics in the world but if it lacks in storyline or ease of play then players will ignore the game. The video game's Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2010 & Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012 are proof of this. The games have stunning graphics but the storyline for single player is extremely dull. Also for PC game play forboth of the controls are possibly the worst when it comes to racing games.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Wow that is an amazing condemnation and bundle of assumptions. I will join your group of the Damned: I won't so much as download that game ever due to the style they chose. It's not the end of the world, and no one will suffer because I won't play it. Now I guess I will go back to my low IQ, bad career choice and sexually transmitted diseases. lmao

Because quests are done for 3 years old?
  • ArchlyteArchlyte Member RarePosts: 1,405

I enjoyed the OPs outrage over people refusing to play the game because it looks like a cartoon. Especially good is the part where he declares my objections to playing not "relevant." I'm just glad that there are enough people not playing for the OP to post a rage about it. I personally hope this trend of cartoon or "stylized' graphics is over soon. If you would have told me ten years ago that all future MMOs would look like something Fisher Price or Duplo would by advertising space in, I would have thought you a kook. Maybe someday technology will catch up with my perception, oh wait it did

It's like stepping into a comic strip.  You can have fun with it but I don't see the staying power.  Visuals mean a hell of a lot to people, we are visual beings and there is nothing wrong with that.

Sorry, comparing an MMO to Angrybirds, in any context, completely erodes any argument/statement you come up with.

its not because it looks like something off nickjr.. its not because wizard101 has more violence .. its def not because one of the chars is off lilo and stitch..

its because there is no badass in this game. ;)

The arrows that lead you to your quest objectives . I was hoping for something like Vanilla WOW but it seems like an even more dumbed down version of WOW  .  I didn't think that was possible .

1- It reminds them of WoW, yes yes, WoW is still on top of the MMORPG world.

2- They are mad that TESO sucks.

3- Like me, don't really like NCSoft.

4- Have nothing better to do then to complain on something with no meaning what so ever.

It's funny how every game with "crappy" graphics, for those MMO "experts" that say graphics is everything, that we see games like Maple Story, MineCraft, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Open Theme Hospital, Final Fantasy 7, etc, each have millions of players world wide on a daily basis. Yet those new MMORPG's with "amazing" graphics are getting no where near the numbers of these "awful" looking games that I just mentioned. And the best part out of all this, most of these "amazing" graphic MMOs are F2P, yet no one gives a donkey's rear end about them.

Must be depressing for those graphic lovers when they see a game like SWToR having put half a billion on the project, yet are no where near the numbers on the guy who put a 100$ on creating Angry Birds to then sale the rights of it for a few billion. Best part about it is that SWToR has under 5% the current player base of Angry Birds

Old school MMORPGs were successful back then because casual players and communities were the top priority. For the last 6-7 years, we're in the phase where big boobs, cash shops, and real life graphics are the most important features on a MMO.  Honestly and let's use logic, which I  understand can be hard for most of you, but if I wanted big boobs, I'd go watch some porn. I bet Devs are putting a few weeks at least on making boobs wiggle left and right, up and down instead of game play.

Anyways, ya'll keep up the good work at complaining for nothing. It's always a good laugh! :D   o/

I don't get the rude and unnecessary method of getting your point across, but I do agree with the portion I highlighted in yellow.  Nowadays, not only do more computers run games with lower poly counts than those with super realistic graphics (something that MMO's don't need to have in order to be fun IMO), but they reach a wider audience due to their casual appearance.  The same goes for "Angry Birds" or Candy Crush, etc.  Anyone can play them, and now that games are judged on their specific "hook" instead of how detailed they are, they're very popular.

The only thing I didn't get about your post was the correlation between people who love graphics and those who were SWTOR fans.  Honestly, I think the graphics in Wildstar are BETTER than SWTOR's.  It's not exactly a realistic looking game.  I think the most disappointed people were simply Star Wars fans.

"2- They are mad that TESO sucks."

Nice try. Seriously. TESO is awesome. It is by far the best MMORPG I have played since WoW =)

    My personal opinion ofc
