Other than there being different monsters how does this not compare to SWG?

my god... How short sighted can people be. "but it does not haz my spaceships" .....

Mechanics make the game and what players do with said mechanics it does not need the star wars IP to be the SPIRITUAL and thats the keyword folks "Spiritual" succesor to swg.

I'm totally understandable about skepticism surrounding SOE, they've burnt me in the past with Planetside too (not PS2, that game is terrible compared to PS1).  What I don't understand, however, is the completely ignorant and childish title for something that is boasted to be the next Star Wars Galaxy style game.  Granted it's a survival horror game, but I can't name a single one yet that exists let alone that was done "well".  DayZ mod was pasted on a terrible engine and is no where near finished, not to mention it's NOT an MMO as mentioned.

I swear, I've said it before that this site might as well be "Blizzard and anyone else not associated can suck it.com" because the only thing that ever seems to get praised around here are their horrible spoonfed, slop of games that a lobotomized monkey could play.

very well said and I agree 100%.  We do not have a persistent MMO survival game.  Let alone a sandbox Survival game.

The more I hear about this title the more intrigued I become.  For my money SOE is hitting it out of the park.  F2P titles and new and innovative MMO's.  Good times to be a fan of the genre.  Especially considering everyone else is doing so little with so much.  From FFXIV to ESO, the genre and more importantly the Themepark model is becoming dated.  Hopefully this is the future and SOE will be there to guide real innovation.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

They also said there will be alternate rule set servers.  One of the biggest hurdles for my en joyment of games like DayZ, Nether and the likes were they were too focused on the PvP aspect and not enough on the PvE elements.  Hopefully this game will be cool with strict PvE servers and hoardes of undead slaying.

Sci-Fi hasnt been done enough in the MMORPG genre....there are still too many fantasy genre themed games than sci-fi and other genres....

Well I am sure he was talking about the original grind to unlock the Jedi character slot, but that was still such a small part of the game and also didn't come until around 5 months after release.

Having played some DayZ myself, the first thought that came to my head was this would make a great cooperative, persistent MMORPG, where players had to survive in a messed up world and deal with all kinds of threats.  I haven't been playing a lot of zombie games, because they aren't MMO's, so this idea isn't played out for me.

I also agree with you on both points.

I also didn’t want to write a game design document here on the forums, but here goes.

AT first I thought this game could only be two factions.  Humans versus Zombies.  But I now realize that it could be many human factioned.  Think White Hat camp vs Black Hat camp.

Once you level your character to a high enough level, and yes SWG pre-CU/NGE had levels think BH 4324 / TKA 4444 is you don’t believe SWG had levels from the start.  Anyways once I become a Master Stone Cutter / Medium Assault Weapons Specialist 0404. Have collected supplies and transport for all my stuff I head out with my White Hat group to set up and claim a territory.  I bring enough building materials in my transport wagon to build defensible walls and shelter.

BTW, building wont be drop and stack ready made building.  It would be real time Lift, Carry, and Place.  So while construction takes place your group will have to defend against Zombies and Black Hat player groups.

For those interested in end game and raiding, here are my thoughts.  SWG Naboo had a Weapon Development Facility that was a farm for holocrons.  What I see being done in H1Z1 any abandoned facility become a potential dungun with boss and minions.  Think Large Department Store, Food Store, Amusement Park, School, Library, Factory, Military Base, Commercial R&D Center, Power Plant, and the list goes on.

I was there from day one.  I was there before there were speeder bikes and you had to run every where.  FYI, Jedi was in the game from day one.  SOE just didn't tell anyone what the path was.  What I was getting at by quest to Jedi, and any so called sandbox.  Is that there is an unnamed / unspoken QUEST given out.  In a sand box it is typically go forth and thrive.  In SWG it was that and become a Jedi.

As for the light in RP.  I was going based on the number of weekly events that were published at the time. If there were 2 to 5 per server a week I would call that a moderate level of RP.   I would say 6 to 8 per server a week is heavy.  But one a week for all server at most 3 over all server in  week that is light.  Now I am not saying that there was only 1 RP event going on per week over all the SWG server.  But that one event probably ment 10 other were going on as well.  I don't count the load of sexting and dirty talk that went on in the Theed Cantina as RP.  Which I am sure the both of you do.

    1. there were no way to become a Jedi at release, only the graphics were in place, non of the items to unlock the path was in the game at release, so...it wasn't there.

    2. I don't care if you were there are release or not, you don't sound like you were as you are describing the game in a way that it wasn't.

The very idea that anyone is actually trying to make H1Z1 sound as if its like SWG or based on SWG is beyond crazy.

Intelligent AI? They're freaking zombies! This is a case where simplistic AI would actually be beneficial!

Here's the AI for zombies: Wander aimlessly until player seen or heard. Approach. Flail arms & bite. Once dead, eat.

Anything more than that is a waste of time and resources.

Also, we don't need different zombie types. Zombies are only supposed to be reanimated corpses which are dangerous in groups, not acid-spitting death machines or undead acrobatic assassins (such as in the 'of the Dead' remakes). Plenty of ways to make zombies threatening without screwing around with the basic formula.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

Since you aren't going to be able to just AFK macro all of your skills until they are maxed out I guess it really isn't like SWG. You'll actually have to actively play your character. Oh and there's going to actually be things in the world other than empty space.

I'd love to play a full blown mmorpg with sandbox elements and zombies. Farmer, scavenger, tinkerer, sharpshooter, brawler, cannibal, scout, mechanic, tamer, hunter, leader, tanner, gunslinger, traveler, tracker, provisioner, herbalist, specialist, junker, vagabond, soldier, medic, ronin, rancher, preacher, trader and scientist. The list goes on with the amount of skills you can draw upon.

Make it skill based, make the zombies a high priority threat over other players, make social order have clear advantages over lone wolfing (skill gain bonuses while in a community), incentivize protecting over destroying (defense buffs while in your town), make death penalty actually becoming a zombie (biting/killing another person transfers the virus to them),  make crafting the only way to improve equipment.

There are many ways this could pan out as a full blown mmorpg. And I'm not writing it off just yet.

This is quite posibly the setup SOE is going for.

But honestly it does not have to be zombies. This works in any setting.

With zombies youl have: the walking dead. the scenery is zombie the action is struggle to survive /the players.

How about revolution. a global power outtage. Same mechanics would work.

it would even work in a the fantasy genre. Its making the game be about the players and less about the game.

Create a world give the players some tools and let them be the controlling factor. not some preordained path evryone has too follow.

Basicly what MMO(RPG's) where about and the direction they should be heading.

You cannot have played SWG with that kind of comment.  There were tons of rpgers out there if you took the time to look.  As to Jedi, most people ignored it because of the heavy time commitment.   That was the entire problem when NGE hit most of the servers were very heavy with RPers and the changes completely ruined their experience.  When Jedi started appearing everywhere the rpers left.

Next time don't post comments that anyone who played the game would know to be untrue.

As to H1Z1, Smedley long ago lost his mind, why Sony has kept this fool in charge at SOE is one huge mystery.  H1Z1 has failure written all over it.  The only successor it is, is to Smedley's constant failure to deliver anything close to the old EQ success.

Ha ha yeah im glad somebody has said what most people are thinking.

SOE seem to be avoiding creating actual content for their games.

It's not good enough to create a sandbox with nothing in it and say, here you go guys, have fun.

    Lazy and slack developing.

I knew what it was before I saw anything on it, H1N1 Swine flu.. instead it's H1Z1. Definitely wanting to see more of the individual AIs. They mentioned they were aiming for something like the Walking Dead.. Sony very well could pull off this off and it could be the best Zombie online games out there.

Here's the video check it out.

Why is everyone saying the mmo space is oversaturated with zombie horror mmos.  There are none that you can play right now.  The zombie horror genre is one of my favorite after superhero games and there is none that I know of that are any good at all.  Dayz requires you to pay for a alpha game which just seems like a ripoff to me.  So if there are any other zombie mmos, please enlighten me.
