What do you do when suffering MMO burn out?

cybertruckercybertrucker Member UncommonPosts: 1,117

MMO burn out.. It's something I have bee suffering from for awhile now. However I have recently gotten a minor itch to possibly play one again. Yesterday I patched GW2 and logged in for about 5 minutes. In all honesty I didn't have time to  play though or I might of.

However thru out the last several months I have been dedicating my limited free time ( I work ALOT of hours.) to another hobby of mine. Table top wargaming, which includes assembling, modding and painting models and miniatures. As well as actual going up to gamestores when i have time to get a game in.. Face to face, not on the computer. My 2 games of  choice are Warhammer 40k and warmachine/hordes.

So what do other people do when suffering from MMO burnout?

here are a few pics of models I have painted

    nice models.

For me I either play single player games, watch a lot of movies, go to plays and concerts, practice Classical Guitar, write music, I've been making a Skyrim Mod, Hang with friends, go out to dinner a lot, Been playing some duets.

    Stuff along those lines.

Cool pics, you do great work!

When I get burnt out on MMO's I usually turn to Netflix, fire up the old Master of Orion 1 and 2, or hang out with my friends and play some Tiger Woods golf. Like you, my free time is limited due to long work hours, so between these things I stay entertained.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV

I try not to let myself get burnt out to begin with. I have a lot of hobbies and interests. MMO's are just one of many things for me. One of the things I like best is finding old tools at yard sales or flea markets and bringing them back to life.

I also like to model. I am not great at it. But, I like to grab images of animals, plants, and structures from image searches and extrusion-build topologies for them...there is though...almost invariably a point where I start to go an entirely different direction.

In the past I also used to do free-lance sculpting/mesh/texture/animated gesture work on Second Life. Some things that were not exclusive to the person I was making them for made it onto my marketplace page(as I am no longer actively on Second Life these are unsupported freebies...meaning free to you if you have a second life account. Just to be clear, I am not selling anything here):

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/102273

I've also made practice weapons for local martial artists (my oak weapons have water swelled fittings, are fire hardened in all the right places and are drilled in the right places and filled with lead to bring them to a perfect balance).

Sometimes on request their made to look cooler after the functionality is there (the one above is a hand-and-a-half, the one below is actually I different one handed sword)...

But yeah...having a variety of interests is a great way to keep from getting burned out to begin with. I would suggest just never letting MMO's or gaming in general be your only thing (to those who occasionally have this issue of course).

What do I do when I get MMO burnout?  I break out Skyrim, and/or, continue reading the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.  I'm  up to Volume 3!  The Visigoths are coming!  The Visigoths are coming!

I need to get back into 40k.

My only issue is: the new Tyranid codex is utter crap.

But on topic. I never have MMO burnout, though my hobby is actually only gaming and everything that comes with it. Besides that I like to go out, hangout with friends, go to movies, bars, dinner, just relaxing at home with what ever. But all of this I do not consider a hobby.

I do see OP atleast having another hobby.

Also really like Helleri's other hobby of restorations and rebuilds. Very nice. image

When I burned out I decided I was going to make a game, had a ton of fun learning new languages and making some small game prototypes. During this time I got into web development and have since started a new badass high paying job building web applications.

So I guess I should say thank you to WoW, which started the uber hand holding care bear bs that pushed me away from modern MMO's.

Actually. I have a friend who recently got into 3d printing. He has been making Warhammer 40k-esque stuff...can't seem to get the pictures off my phone though. Won't let me download from text messages apparently :/

I have actually been burned out on MMOs for a very long time. The only MMO in recent times I have tried is ESO. And I am not one of those people who buys every single new MMO. I didn't play RIFT, SWTOR, TERA or any other of the big releases. I played WoW and GW1/2 and that was it. I probably have spent more time trolling on this website than playing MMOs.

Anyways I used to play Starcraft 2 quite a bit and now I play DOTA2. I don't play other games outside of that. I play tennis, go to the gym and play football from time to time as my "hobbies". Other than that go out and get drunk :D I recently got my degree and I am still in drink all the time student mode .... I also travel a lot if that's a hobby. I sometimes go to a different country just for the weekend :D And every time I use my holidays, I travel. There are too many countries in the world I have to visit!

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

If you think that's good Tyrion Lannister's woman in that show...played by Sibel Kekilli...she used to do *cough* less reputable films.

There are six (6) women in the Game of Thrones who are formerly "associated" with porn.  There was a recent article about it in mainline news.

I'm not surprised, considering what they are asked to do in the show.  It's not just nudity... (and it's really not consistent with the books, either, so it's obviously the directors taking "poetic license").

Insofar as what I do when I suffer MMO burnout, I go out and chase younger women.  It's very easy for me; they're ALL younger.  The older I get, the more younger women there are... and I'm too old to catch any of them, so it's an absolutely safe "hobby".

Mostly it's called "wishful thinking" and "vivid imagination"...

I just like the whole Dragon Queen character idea.

I also installed Freelancer again as a game fix but only got to Leeds so far.

Dicking around in Perpetuum as well because my accounts made free but I forgot how group intensive that game can get and I don't stay logged in long.

Firstly, the models look well done! And it is an excellent hobby that can be enjoyable and community friendly.

Secondly, MMOs can only hold a player's attention for so far. Burnout is expected. I just end up reading news from MMORPG. Yeah, it is kind of lame, but that is just me.

The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

I find I play other styles of games when suffering the MMO lull.

    Probably what most people do:

Anticipate the next "big" MMO and spend years thinking / following it...  only to end up hating it on release.
