Since both Wildstar and ESO are still under NDA I wont say anything about them. I did  pre-order the CE edition of ESO and I'm not touching Wildstar if that tells you anything.  I hope it does well though for those who do enjoy it.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

yet another X game is last hope for MMO's blah blah blah, its a good thing that MMO's serve such a diverse range of player interests, rather than a game being the last hope, its more a case of, 'here's another varient type X game to suit Y type player demographic'

If Wildstar really was the last hope then i really think it would be a case of 'abandon all hope ye who enter here' image

  • Yeah, there'll be more MMORPGs if WildStar fails. But it's the last chance for me this year for a "real" MMO of any worth. Shame about ESO, as I was really looking forward to that. But let's just say I participated in a couple of beta weekends for that game and I currently have no plans to play that at launch.

I have been reading most of the forum posts for Wildstar (and ESO) and while I don't know how good Wildstar, will be in the long run, I hate having to read through posts from ill informed people that just seem to want to Troll any game.

One of the biggest moans people seem to have with this game is the telegraphs on the floor in combat (and graphics but hey if 7 odd mill can live with WOW graphics WSs is not so bad in this department). This has been stated in quite a few posts before but I am going to say it again here so the Trolls can stop griping about it:

THE TELEGRAPHS CAN BE TURNED OFF IN OPTIONS

Now don't get me wrong I am not a fan boy I am just fed up of seeing this argument used over and over again to say why this game is crap. Will I buy Ws on release I am still not sure have to wait and see.

I agree with you Daemonweaver.  Unfortunately this goes on with every mmo forum.  People either base their opinions on other people's opinions, or on a video, or on a limited 'sneak peak' from a 'beta'.  Too bad you cannot turn the telegraphs off on the videos...  My favorite is when you are actually playing the game and read the questions that come up like:  "How do you turn on/off ________________?"  Which is hilarious seeing as how the options menus for mmo's (and most pc games) have always been under the esc key for over two decades...  The gaming culture has changed from "eager exploration" to "I can't be bothered to read or try what always works (ie: I can't waste my precious tumble/twitter/facebook/pinterest time)".  All that or I'm just becoming a curmudgeon.  Probably a mixture of both.  As usual, don't confuse opinions for fact (opinions tend to be more flammable!).

    Cheers!

Both Wildstar and ESO are not what i expected to be, each one for different reasons. Not paying 50-60$ + 15$ / month for none of them.  If i m going to pay a sub i ll stay to WoW, from which at least i know what to expect and i will not have (once again) to buy a game for 50-60$ that will last (at least for me) a couple of months...
  • Can you say what you dislike about WildStar or is there an NDA in place?

  • PoisondwarfPoisondwarf Member UncommonPosts: 33

Everything listed below is just my opinion and does not break NDA as all this can be seen from Youtube Videos released by the press.

Wildstar is a 'WOW clone'. I know that this is a term banded around a lot but lets look at the facts:

    - Graphics are very similar. Only real difference is the setting

    - Quests are very similar to WOW (ie. kill 10 rats, collect this and that) and also not voiced which in my opinion is something all modern MMO's should have. I hate having to read walls of text.

    - Gameplay is the only thing that is different but again I found it to be just a button mashing exercise. Not really any skill involved. Just GW2 gameplay with telegraphs on the floor to dodge.

    - PVP is just WOW battlegrounds. Warplots have yet to be shown but I recon they will just be battlegrounds where you have designed your own base

    - Dungeons don't look like anything special. Only the healer will have a different experience as there is more skill involved to heal, whereas tank etc... will be just the same as WOW.

    - Player housing is great if you are into that kind of thing but really not an essential part of any MMO.

    - Path system is different but really just more of the same quests just ones slightly more suited to what you like to do. Still grind.

    - Only one weapon per class. I hate that and it will become very boring very quickly. I like choice and WS does not give you this.

If you are looking for an updated WOW set in a sci-fi world then you will enjoy Wildstar, if you are looking for something different then you will be sadly disappointed.

This is the only point I truly consider negative. But it depends on what kind of "WoW clone" it is. If dungeons is just your basic WoW post-TBC AoE fest, I'm probably out. But if it's challenging (outside of raiding) as prior to WotLK, I'm more inclined to like it.

Fluidity and "feel" of combat is another key point for me. I just can't enjoy a game where the combat feels awkward or like a struggle against the game rather than the opponents.

Meh, I always have FFXIV to fall back on. Not the best MMO as far as gameplay goes, but SE has proven it doesnt abandon their MMOs and their loyal players to F2P garbage. Wildstar has potential but I wouldnt get my hopes up ... its published by NCSoft.
  • PhryPhry Member LegendaryPosts: 11,004
For those that think that 2014 is a year without hope, or that somehow Wildstar really is the 'last hope' might want to check out Angry Joes latest youtube vid, 20 games on multiple platforms, all looking pretty good, and oddly enough, not one of them is Wildstar, guess he missed that one image
  • Wildstar last hope? Nah.

    Im still going with TESO.

Love the immersion you know? And PvP is awesome.

Still wish wildstar best of luck.

Anyone else a little disappointed with ESO and now turning more attention to Wildstar?

    its not just wildstar

    there is archeage

    black desert

    and bless

now if none of those work then i guess will have to wait till ncsoft aion 2 and lineage 3 project with the unreal engine 4 and ofc blizzard titan project

if all fails i stick with solo adventure-rpg games and be done with mmo's

now back to ni no kuni ^^

Whilst I was intially put off by WS I have spent a lot of time researching and I have to give it props....

Everything I have seen and read has definitely turned my initial opinion on it's head. Yes the graphics are cartoony and that DID put me off at first. But like all games, once you have been starign at them for a few hours, the graphics just become the graphics and I personally find I just "get used" to them.

I also really like the attitude that WS exudes, it does NOT take itself too seriously, seems to have a sort of rockstar attitude about most things it sets out to do and the game actually has some very adult themes woven in to it.

I too was initially put off by the telegraph system although this seems to be much less of a crutch as the game progresses, some of those raid videos actually look like chaotically good fun :)

As a gamer I am usually firmly entrenched in the "sandbox is best" school of thought however I am genuinely going to give WS a go with an open mind whilst I am awaiting more concrete news on The Repop and Black Desert.

As to the last hope for the genre, IMO what the world really needs is a Dark Souls MMORPG :O A sandbox MMORPG based on an adult,  gritty, deep and complex lore system with the Dark Souls combat system....

I think the games you are looking for are called Single player games.  Those you can spend money on and then promptly abandon after a month.

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.

Its actually true though.  Theres no longer MMO's out where you stick with it for years.  Most if not all players nowadays abandoned a game for a short time playing it and move onto something else.  That means games are not all that great quality and quantity wise anymore.  Its a shame.  The last game to truly grasp me for years was DAoC and Everquest

Neither WildStar or ESO ever looked like good games, they are filler games while you wait for something good to come out. They are hoping the core players sub for a couple months so they can make their money but I don't think either game is going to thrive long term.

Not sure about that one.  I cant say much about WIldstar because I loathe how lame and pathetic and childish it looks but ESO on the other hand happens to have more content in it then most, if not all mmos to come out in years at the start.  So, thats promising.

Meh looks like ESO is still our last hope forced 40 man raids in Wildstar put me off hardcore raiders of course will love it. To all their own I'll take deep and interesting story and quests over standing around waiting 40 a 40 man raid to form up.

While not really on the market for either of the games, it's quite opposite for me. Story in MMOs is largely irrelevant for me since it's a one time thing you go through and are done with (like in SWTOR). If i want story i play singleplayer or a a fun co op title. MMOs i expect to be my time killers and large scale group content fits that bill perfectly. Also standing around waiting forever is not really a thing if you have well organised guild.

Im at the point where i won't mind ot grind mindlessly for shiny. Most recent MMOs however prefer to hand shinies equally to everyone that finishes some story quest chain, making the shiny feel less special and, well, shiny. I miss the times when killing heaps of mobs in the so called open world actually had a chance of giving you something worthwhile.

Hate to break it to ya, every game has telegraphed red attacks now.

    EVERY GAME.

Yeah, except wildstar went a step further and gave green heal AoE too? Wtf, handhold much?

And many more are games using the concept SANBOX . AND wildstar is not one of them, nothing new there. Neext! Old concept!

Also it seems like the games coming out in the near future will all have the SANDBOX concept within the game...

I think we are witnessing the death of linear gaming =)  but there are still alot of games that started out with that concept and dont have the money to change it into SANBOX.  So those kind of games will still popup for a year or two and die fast.... THEN no more linear games! I hope :p

If you like mmos then SANBOX is like heroin to a drug adict =)

I'm a huge fan of Star Citizen, but acting like sandbox is new?  Sandbox is just as old and can get just as stale.

Do not assume of anything crazy different from the typical quest hub mmo.

Bring a raid boss into Warplots pvp and unleash it on your foe is different. Build up your " let's call it a Garrison " in warplots is different. It's not all about quest hubs, the combat is different from an mmorpg perspective as well. You actually have to move and aim your skills. I guess quest hubs don't bother me, every game has them one way or another some just choose to display them differently.

I remember being able to kite World Bosses into Stormwind.

WoW is adding player housing in next x-pac.  Who knows, maybe even some kind of keep system...tbd there

Not knocking Wildstar.  I'm interested in it, but let's be real...one of it's big selling points is WoW devs....

The game will be a LOT like WoW.
