What did you expect the games story is about a demon who harvests peoples souls. The storyline is definitely a mature one.

Up till Skyrim, all of TES games kept it T rated.

The funny thing is that Skyrim is the least mature game in the franchise.

Mature rating allows for better writing

Ratings on games is stupid anyways.  I remember playing the original Mortal Kombat as a kid,  I didn't go out setting people on fire or pulling people's hearts from their chests lol.

I hope they embrace the M rating and make it more graphic.  This is the one thing I absolutely loved about Age of Conan.  They were going for an M rating, and didn't care what that meant.  It's all a joke though, the ESRB that is.  Anyone that goes out and kills or hurts people because of a game, music, movie, tv, or whatever they want to blame it on, was already messed up in the head.

Do people actually pay attention to the ratings? I do not have kids but lets say you buy a 12yo a MMORPG do you look at the rating to decide?

I'm glad for the rating. Hopefully it will keep out the kiddies.

With MMOs its different, there are certain rules and regulations that must be followed.

No they didn't.  Oblivion originally got a Teen rating, but was switched rather quickly to an M rating as soon as people got wind of mods.  I have the GOTY edition lying on desk with my other game DVDs and its plain as day.

Not to mention, family game night is going by the wayside?  Guess what, my 6yr old will be playing with me most likely.  The rating is placed their for convience for the uniformed parent that doesn't have a clue about their child's hobby.  In my case, its my hobby that my son tags along with.  The content maybe "M" rated such as the storyline and options you can use in game due to bonuses they give you (Take some sort of drug or drink and have a positive or negative effect)  My son isn't going to care about do much more than smashing monsters with his dad and getting stronger, and collecting different pets if their are options for that.

Entertainment Software Rating Board is a political tool.

I don't know about "better" writing but it allows more honest writing considering the subject matter.

People just misunderstand what this rating means. All it means is that parents who are concerned about what their kids watch/read/play can make informed decisions.

Some parents don't care and some parents care but will have a challenge keeping this stuff from their children (let's face it, if a "kid" wants to see/play this stuff then they will. It does (or can) open up dialog during the child's development.

"No" it won't keep the "kiddies" away and "no" it doesn't mean that it will be a better product for it. It does mean that since these games have subject matter that can be violent or disturbing that the content can be more honest and impactful and not have to skirt around certain things.

This is a good thing, it allows for more creative development freedom.

Just look at the GuildWars 2 'living story' and how horrid that is because it is written to entertain children.

Its a little to late to make a lot of pre release changes...  How about post release added maturity..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Im all for the M rating, I mean really, Lets make a game universe lets say like Warhammer 40k, rated for children.......just make a Cat and Dog MMO and go away
  • keithiankeithian Member UncommonPosts: 3,191
Good article, but totally disagree about the Kill Cam. I found them completely annoying and ruined immersion.

    There Is Always Hope!

Also, really, whats the average number of Kids under 18 years of age that play MMOs? vs People that are over 18 years of age

The "M" rating is neither here nor there to me.  What I am happy about is that they refuse to alter the game because of the "M" rating. So tired of games and movies being altered because of some fucking pantie-wasting board of overly sensitive, insta-judging , PC jerk-holes with a Mothra-sized bug up each and every one of their hypocritical asses and a secret stash of password protected kiddie-porn on their hard-drives.

In the day and age of growing Facebook games, and smartphone games I would highly disagree with this assessment. PC gaming, the granddaddy of modern gaming should remain the purview of the realistic and mature gamer.  You want Rainbows and Puppy Dogs go play a Facebook app.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

I was delighted when ESO got an "M" rating, after all this is an ES mmo, why should it differ from the rpg's? While it's not as true "M" rated as AoC was per say, I would love to see a more mature direction taken for combat, the story, and anything that this rating allows them to achieve.

Hmm....Author....Kill Cams....already been done...6 or 7 years ago now.....Age of Conan has epic kills.

But you are spot on that it will not meet the M rating expectations of ES series fans. Which will be another black eye on it's release.
