Trash talk

GavendaGavenda Kennebunk, MEPosts: 24Member

I am getting this close to just hanging up my MMO life after a dozen<more or less> mostly fun filled years of adventures.  The trash talking community in every major game I have played, and that is most of them, is just pathetic and aggravating.  Having an ignore list at least 4 times the size of a friend list is crazy!

Why can't there be  separate channels set up for other then MMO  chat?  I really don't give a dime about your religion, politics and sexual preferences, I just like to game and want to discuss anything related to it.

I am currently playing Rift which I do enjoy, but have chars on several servers so when kiddie time starts<NO, WOW is NOT the first MMO>, or, here come the politics and religious/racial debates, and I use that term very loosely....I can switch to another server to talk the game or just play and enjoy game chatter.

But alas, I grow tired of the switching and think it just is not worth it. To be fair, I have played only 1 MMO where it was not so much an issue and that was Wurm.   If anyone knows of another MMO fantasy, with crafting housing and lots of quests, I would like to know about it.  Realistically, I think I have tried every major one and many lesser ones already:(

I have looked at many on the forums and many  warn against the same trash talk and rude, racist and gross conversations as well.

In SWToR, you can hide the chat box. I have a good friend, she never runs around with chat up. I have to contact her in Vent. Can you turn off the chat box in Rift?

Edit: The best housing I have seen was in Rift & EQ2. You could give EQ2 a try I guess.

That's the with with MMO's and life. May as well throw in the towel on both because it's not going to change.

I like the friendly trash talking like "get owned scrub!" and "haha so mad" because we're all just having fun, but I agree with you. I dislike vulgar or obscene insults and I know what you mean when people are talking about disgusting garbage, literal trash talk. But I guess you just have to try to avoid them.

Trash talk can be a major issue. I found the best way to defeat it is to force them to justify it by over analyzing their comments.

    Scenario:

     Antagonist Player:  "You fail uninstall!"

You:  "How exactly did I fail?"

Antagonist  Player: "By install ing the game!"

You: "I'm sorry, I don't see that as a failure could you explain?"

Antagonist Player: "It's simple, you suck so you shouldn't play!"

You: "Could you explain exactly what you found to be lacking in how I play (besides having the game installed or uninstalled, as that seems to be a circular argument. And, I am not seeing your actual point)?"

At this point they will usually:

    a) Repeat themselves, at which point most people around will see them as defeated and tell them to stuff it.

    b) Actually start giving some real critiques, which people around will dicker on the validity of.

    c) Stop talking all together or start engaging someone else.

But, in any case the potential flame war situation has been diffused. And, there may be some good discussion that comes out of it. Discussion that may cause the initial Antagonist to question the value of making broadly generalized and derogatory assertions.

You'll may also notice that while having this kind of exchange with another player. most of the time. The rest of the room falls silent. It's like a loud sudden noise that makes all the prairie dogs look in one direction simultaneously with intense focus. Struggling to ascertain what is happening. And, you may with the very next player to be that way in the same area (usually in games where this is bad they are not that far apart) see some other player do the same thing you just did to the next one. That's because while idiotic behavior is contagious. So, is being reasonable.

IMO a better way is to make a second chat box that is identical just with all the general chat type channels turned off so you can still receive personal messages.

plus you can always easily switch back when you want in case you are looking for a group or trading something.

i know this because that's exactly what i do when i play SWTOR or any MMO really, that has that option at least.

I've been a long time proponent of doing away with zone chat all together.  I find it a useless, game breaking mechanic that does way more bad than it does good.

Nothing like jumping into a game where you intend to allow someone to try and convince you that you are some kind of magical being in some kind of magical world and having the first thing you read be some anti-government/racist/sexist/rude/creepy/childish/annoying comment, not to mention LFG, which in my opinion immediately nullifies the purpose of putting any tavern of inn in the game at all.

I guess I would mind half of this stuff if you had to actually go somewhere to hear it, i.e. tavern or inn, but just having it on all the time and constantly scrolling off to the side, mixed in with information that could also be valuable, has always been a pet peeve of mine.

In Age of Wushu they make you pay for the ability to speak in zone chat.  Much less BS although you still get it from time to time.  Their local chat is almost impossible to read though because of the bots.  This though, adds to the charm of the bustling city to me, and is completely tolerable.  You want to tune someone out, you right click on their name and ignore.  It's a really good system actually.

Hide the chat box, if possible, and never group.  That's what I have done for the last 8 or 9 years just to eliminate the mindless drivel I would otherwise be forced to read.

Separate channels?  Most games DO have multiple channels, sometimes even player-created channels.  The bucknuts who speak "Barrens Chat" or who like to talk off-topic know there's more fun to be had in General Chat/World Chat or whatever.  Hell, some people can't even be bothered to use Trade Channels!  It's been that way for 15 years.

Yeh, taverns are pretty useless in games. I probably wouldn't notice if all the taverns are taken out.

This ^^ .. if you don't like people (or what they say), don't play with them. Just enjoy the game solo, and you will be fine.

Comical story related to my days in DAOC.

I played on lancelot & on the vnforums was quite vocal in my criticisms of other players.  In particular, players who had a very high opinion of themselves.  I used to hunt them down in game and gank & post screenshots of it.  This was followed by vehement denials of them actually playing at the time etc.  The trash talking went on for some time until I got banned from the forums.

I'd quit the game for close to a year... play SWG for awhile and decided to return.

So I log in and I start getting messages from people saying something which I interpret to be laughter.  I'm like whatever.. keep doing my thing.  I start getting more of these messages.  I do /who check who it is and notice the guild name.

I ask my guild (who invited me back immediately upon returning) wtf these guys are messaging me.  They're like you don't know ?

Turns out while I was away some other anon troll was antagonizing people.  One dude who I used to make fun off out of the blue decided to accuse this troll of being me.  Suddenly & without any proof the rest of the mouthbreathers all assume it to be true.  I couldn't believe it.

not that I cared, I found it hilarious.  My original presence on the forums had traumatized these kids so much they were accusing other trolls of being me.

zone/general chat is always the lowest common denominator of the games population. Adding that as a standard feature was a mistake.
