Most of the mmorpgs out there has the same amount of people playing per server as WoW has, so pick any game that has more than one server and go to the most populated server and you will have people running around you just like in WoW's full servers. Unless it's EVE ofcourse which has only a single server but it also has more people on that server than probably any other mmorpg on a single server.

Er... no. Not Rift. Rift has merged servers about 4 times and the population is ever declining.

GW2 and SWTOR don't have any numbers that they've released, and signs show the latter is doing poorly.

The ONLY western MMOs we KNOW of are WoW, and Eve's 560k subscribers.

Umm, the numbers for SWToR's cash shop are known see  ( http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/18/led-by-mobile-and-free-to-play-u-s-digital-sales-see-big-gains/) & ( http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a2b9207999131347c9c0c44ce&id=f1b8fb8081&e=56010f2224 ). I would not call the numbers for SWToR bad at all.

Cash shop profit != players. That's the whole point of cash shops, is that you can fund an entire game on a few "whales".

Of the numbers we actually have, Eve is in second place and growing.

I agree that Cash shop does not equal players but we also have the EA conference calls with their over 2 million monthly logins and nearly 500k subs which was quaoted by Dancy in his defense of p2p ( http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/feature/8109/General-Pathfinder-Onlines-Ryan-Dancey-Defends-Elder-Scrolls-Online-and-Subscriptions.html ).  Since Officers must sign and attest to those statements, we can be pretty sure those are true as well.

You cannot use other game's history of server merges vs. GW2 not having any. GW2 cannot merge servers even if the population was low enough. Or at the very least. Doing so would require a hell of a lot more restructuring than any other MMO.

ANd to answer the poster who askied why I think SWTOR is bigger, I can only say, there are no population numbers, but I believe SWTOR is making a lot more money.

Actually WOW is the second runner up as far as I know.  Club Penguin has more active subscribers... seriously look it up, it's silly.

True, but those numbers were only announced after the big, hyped up FTP launch. No numbers have been given since.

True, while we do not have any monthly logins figures recently, however subs are up mostly due to players trying out GSF while access required subscriber status. A lot of peeps also wanted the bomber access as well.

So when you couple a large f2p population and nearly the same number of subs then the actual number of players playing SWToR is greater than EVE. This results also correlates to the much larger tracking numbers for SWToR on services like raptr / xfire ect as well.

You can disagree with any fact when it stands against what you believe in. It happens all the time here :)

hhhhhhmmmmmmmmm i wish EQN was out already because my WOW sub is going to be out soon and i'm burned out on it honestly. I have ran the end game raid for this current expansion 32 times. Normal and Heroic included. Hm was just seeing what what was next to it population wise just to migrate for a little while.

FFXIV for sure right now; if you include asia? Blade and Soul or Lineage 2 for sure. Blade and Soul may even be trumping WoW in terms of overall numbers. Having 2million people playing at one time in one country is huge, I don't think WoW pulls that off.

But what we’re targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo

    I don't play on EU :D

Only US my work schedule does not confide well with EU servers.

Why is it so important that it be the next biggest game. If you're on a full server every game is going to feel exactly the same population wise. They all hold about the same number of people..give or take.

Having lots of people around isn't going to make a game suck less if you don't like it.

  • JorlJorl Member UncommonPosts: 257
Shame, I'm sure the US has more though. Might be worth a look, they're free. I just play Tera casually, passes the time. :)

I don't play games that are ghost towns. It's more immersive for me when there is lot's of players.

    looks like SWTOR died. lol.

    Official figures.

Please note these are for in game purchases only, does not include subscription fees.

This also doesn't give numbers on active players but can provide some insight based on in game purchases.

Highest MMO is League of legends.

Highest, most recent MMORPG outside of wow is SWTOR.

Likes of Lineage still higher though.

    Thanks again,

    Craig.

GW2 probably only have 500k active players who log on every month to be honest.  But after they release in China, the population might give a huge boost.

The 2nd most populated mmo is most likely an asian mmorpg.  Lineage1 probably beat most western mmorpg already, and it isn't even the top populated mmorpg in asia.

Games such as club penguin, maple story, runescape might top the chart.

But since no one care about those games on this forum.  I would say GW2, SWTOR, EVE might top the chart.

This is why we need more subscription based games. :) It's harder to fake populations. It's easier to say (and prove) that a game has X subscribers. But in FtP and similar games you can make an account  or even multiple accounts and never play again.

Considering that SWTOR earned 139 millions in 2013 just from cash shop not counting revenue from subs http://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/us-digital-games-market/ I would say that probably SWTOR, GW2 might be in the same league as well.

I don't know if this is a reason for more subscription based mmo's tbh
