I take it that you never played EvE online nor any other sandboxy game. You know if there was too much "content" at high level people wouldn't have to think of creating their own. But as far as you described they actually have to and they do so splendidly. I really hope that the players here in western europe will bes as creative and consequential as the PvP clans you mention.

On the other hand if you personally want to have fun in such a game stop asking what it can do for you and just start creating content. Even small gangs can do some pirating and mischief or you go with a bunch of friends to get the monopoly on trade resources in certain areas. The possibilities are much broader than just do a daily routine of waiting in the capital for the moronic LFG tool to pop you into a boring PVE dungeon with total strangers you will probably meet never again.

I have 70 mil char in EVE not counting alts. But AA is nothing like EVE where PvP and other activities have a meaning and benefits.

You can do pirating in small groups, yes, but you get nothing for sinking other ships. And they dont even suffer much, since ship can be restored with crafted item "Glasses". Taking trading packs from others was the only reward for PvP, but guess what, XLGames recently announced that if you took someones pack and delivered it to NPC, you dont get full price for it anymore. Only 40%, while the man who crafted pack gets 60% (could be otherwise, not sure) by mail.

I don't find EvE to have a meaningful PvP and i have a char with 81 Mil skill points.

What XLGames announced, they announced for Korean version, and by the time it arrive to  NA/EU - it will be many months later. It can even change due to feedback from Korean players.

Care to explain what meaningful PvP >>in a MMORPG<< is for you, if not EvEs? Synthetic arenas? Battlegrounds which yield welfare epics for more grind than the bloody PvE instances? Some equally synthetic leaderboards?

The meaning in PvP as played out in EvE is in the consequences. You have to properly prepare and plan otherwise you will very probably get ganked. It is much more tactical and strategical than in other games where you just rush in head first, since the worst that can happen to you is to get revived at the next spawn point without any loss whatsoever, not even item damage in PvP.

In EvE on the other hand you can lose 42 plex worth 800$ in a second when you insist on being stupid like the guy who shutteled them around in a noobship. Also PvP and ship loss is the driving factor of the ingame economy. And without loss (and major loss) ingame economies suck. Most games just make your items obsolete by some artificial "soulbinding" mechanism to drive need which is far inferiour ond less fun than having stuff blown up.

So fear to you is meaningful PvP? You are so scared to lose some digital item - that it becomes epitome of PvP?

You wrote:  " The meaning in PvP as played out in EvE is in the consequences. "

And then you wrote: " In EvE on the other hand you can lose 42 plex worth 800$ in a second " - This means you are afraid to lose items in EvE, and that is the reason behind your " meaningful PvP ". Your PvP is based around a way to not lose your digital item.

And then you wrote: " ship loss is the driving factor of the ingame economy " -  you see where i am going with this. One flow after another in the game design.

EvE had some good idea, but they failed to deliver.

So much hate for a really great and honest review.

    As i said before:

So many elitist korean players in fear that nobody will be ganked by them in NA? Poor boys ^^

    Actually it is.

    PvP->risk->fear->loss/gain

Open world PvP with territory control is a "meaningful PvP", while the instanced/battleground PvP is just "trash PvP".

    Role Players will care.

Do you know if there is a Role Playing Community in Russian CBT?

There isnt and there wont be in EU/US. This game offers nothing for roleplayers.

Why are you so mad at the game?

I think it offers more to Role Players then any Western MMO this days:

    1.  Chat Bubble - with Say/Shout/Whisper.
    2.  Rich Lore - based on Western and Eastern Cultures
    3.  Open world Housing System
    4.  Rich trading system, based on traveling.
    5.  Rich crafting system based on player team work.
    6.  Open World PvP in High level Zones
    7.  Ability to chat with the Enemy players.
    8.  Owning your own territory on the Northern island.
    9.  Pirats.
    10.  An ability to interact with objects - sittng in chairs, sleeping on the bed.
    11.  Lots of Emotes - even a rock-papper-scissors game.

I can go as far as saying this game excually earnes it's RP letters in MMORPG.

What I think is funny is most of these features were available in MMO's from the late 90's (Asheron's Call, Ultima Online) yet we are just now getting back to having these features in MMOs and it's considered a step forward.

I'm incredibly glad it's finally happening, I just find it funny how everyone has almost forgotten those old features, that used to be something you would include in your MMO no questions asked (SW:G had all these features as well).

(It sucks you dont wanna see it)

Wrong. "My" PvP is based around the desire to have fun. That is my only driver to play games at all. EvE makes it easy to have fun, since you have the risk vs. reward scheme. You can lose a lot, but your loss is usually someone elses gain. And vice versa. All 42 plexes dropped for example and the guy who made the kill managed to secure them and was a happy panda with little tears of joy in his eyes from all I heard.

In other games the PvP is pure ePeen without any consquences whatsoever on your ability to play the game. In EvE (and I so hoped in ArcheAge) it can give you a major boost or make you go back to the start.

" Fear is the path to the dark side. "

Open world PvP has many faces. In EvE online - besides fear of loosing ships and geting moons to craft Capitals - that is the boundry of  " meaningful PvP " there.

Hundreds of star systems - and no reason to fight other then for the sake of fighting.

It's like imagine a game where it's just you and your friend troublemaker. You fight each other, over and over again, and as you fight you get stronger and stronger - but the question still remains " Why are you fighting? " - meaningless PvP.

If you can't tolerate the feedback on your review, you shouldn't make one in the first place.

I to would like to add my $0.02

I have played and beta tested more games than most of you =o) Please raise your hand if you beta tested M59 or UO =o) Hell if you did wave (SrBardGrayHaven/SoulCatcher here) I'm older than dirt =o) some of you may need to Google those (wink) you know who you are.

Archeage IS the next great game. Its not EQN, Wild Star or ESO (I'll be in ESO this weekend to see the changes but I don’t expect much)

ArcheAge is not WoW and if that’s what your looking for WildStar is your game.

If your are interested in a true MMO that is SUBVERSIVE of the current MMO WoW standard then this is your new game.

ArcheAge is hard, Jake is making it where you only get ahead if you work hard, Solo or in a group. You can buy stuff but that stuff is cool but it does not affect game play.

You cant cheat and buy WoW gold from farmers you cant do the many accepted issues(cough bot) game company’s allow.

It is a true old days earn your way game. Its not for the faint at heart; you can work like a dog and loose everything. You can go to prison and be labeled for the rest of your character life, and your peers decide this.

Its the best PvP I have ever played and Yes I have played it on the Japanese servers and I cant read Japanese, but I still played. I expect Trion to make this game there new flagship game very soon. I expect to see lots of press maybe bigger than Rift =o) Scott better not let us down!

It has won every award in the Asian Pacific gaming world. The issues you bring up are some of the positive points that make it different. Its not a WoW clone in any form. Its not even a close cousin to Lineage 1 or 2. It is the first and best 4th generation MMO.

    Only HARD CORE gamers welcome.

This is interesting. I've been looking at this game for a long time, and like you, I am older than dirt. I also was fortunate enough to beta UO and play it for a number of years.

The thing is - if your review is correct, then I am highly interested in this game. If the OP's view is correct, then I will be incredibly sad. It's still hard for me to believe that all characters are either useless or 1 button spammers, but i've seen worse. I really hope this isn't the case. Luckily i've been able to get my sandbox/pvp fix from Rust.

    Hello,

if I might add my 2 cents, some time ago I made a review of the Korean Version after playing it for months. I've posted the review here:

    http://archeagesource.com/topic/1804-56kphone-warning-personal-review-what-you-should-know-about-archeage/

It might seem old but I think it's still relevant. For the people still undecided: You might want to check the stories section. It's also going to be updated next month with RU info and more detailed/well written/less biased paragraphes about everything! =)

Most of the staff OP wrote is true, but i dont consider it negative, this kind of a game attracts me.

Skill wise it reminded me of TSW wheel, lots of possibilities, but i reality only couple good builds.

I call them "minigame pvp" or "score pvp". :)

Meaningful pvp is when do you have a reason to fight beyond the fight itself (what rules out the "score" type). I consider pvp fights motivated by personal wrangles meaningful too.

    Nicely put.

And to Jonas: When you play chess do you do it out of fear or because you want to see others suffer? And when you play Poker for real money? Sometimes common sense brings you farther than some nerdy pseudo-psychology. Risk and Reward are motivational helpers and aso serve to further immersion. There is no other game I know off where simple travelling is so full of suspense as in EvE at times.

About ArcheAge. Assuming the info in the archeage-source thread by KeksX is correct I fail to see the "hardcore" aspect. It sounds even worse than Teras safezone hugging. And what did they make of the original idea of the sieges?

Anyways. I will wait until Trion publishes their ideas and changes.

.......sadly once AA is released here all of us (inc me) will  lap trions garbage all  up =(
