armor details look a bit like bodypaint

Nemesis7884Nemesis7884 Member UncommonPosts: 1,023

Am i the only one who is a bit bothered by that? Im no graphics nazi but a lot of the armor looks simply like they have taken the naked character model and painted the armor over it - that might be an easy way to do it but it looks quite cheap. Even mmo's muuuuuch older didnt do it to that extend - for example age of conan which i still consider to have some of the best mmo armor i have ever seen...it looks a bit cheap no?

At least they could make the armor bulk a bit bigger, it just looks weird that a character is wearing a heavy armor that snugs his skin tightly like a wet suit?!

the difference might be subtle but having different "layers" makes armor looks so much better and so much more realistic. Sometimes it also seems through smart use of "open" and closed armor spaces age of conan just much better creates the "illusion of layers" and depth...either way, armor in eso looks kinda meh and altough we do have different art styles you can easily recognise that the basic armor models come from the same artists which imo is bad - they should hire the age of conan guys.

different concept art, different style, different. Doesn't look terribad to me, the only illusion here, tbh, is your views.

Jump to 14 seconds in to look at the armour. Or at least...in the char creation screen.

Seems a confirmation of the OPs statement... Breastplates dont seem to have a fysical component.... Which obviously hands, shoulders and boots do have...

Its not a game killer for me, but it is a pitty

As long as the gameplay is tight, it shouldn't matter much. Unless one is strict about armour behaviour. I.e. dancing/moving around and having plate armour move like rubber.

it just doesnt look "next gen" to me or 2014 material...it looks like 2008 at best. Which is a real shame cause at least the art style looks a lot better than those weird first tries at armors and the environment really looks beautiful imo they nailed it with that!

but the armors...meh - they should really hire the age of conan guy, he is a genius.

besides the armor it seems while the environment is as said stunning, everything placed in it looks rather 10 years old...for example props. In one video they showed a basket with apples, and the apples were basically a flat surface with apples painted on it  - i mean cmon, thats not 2014...

It probably has something to do with making sure that ESO's rvr doesn't end up being like an AoC guild siege.

Graphics and mass Pvp events dont go hand in hand.... Its allways a trade off...

Fps shooters have it easy becuase they have much less different armors and much less people on screeen..

the game has to run fluently on older hardware too...

There is a reason that mass PvP in Age of Conan is allmost unplayable...  And other developers have learned from this... So far only GW2 has had an engine to support fluent mass PvP..

Meh whatever....as long as it plays well and they don't look like 2007 or earlier I'm good. I mean I like pretty armor and all but the last thing I'm going to be doing is the equivalent of sharing in the mirror while I'm trying to beat back the enemy faction.

Hmm, SWTOR had/has terrible armor graphics. Hopefully TESO will do better than that. I have not been part of any TESO beta but looking at some screenshots my impression so far is

    AoC >> TESO > SWTOR

regarding armor graphics. But who knows whether those screenshots are not faked. Let's hope for the best. Won't buy TESO wihout an open beta anyway.

Swtor armor can be blamed on the dreadfull hero engine..

They did. For "prototyping". So they say.

Yeah I was just about to point that out:

You licensed HeroEngine a long time ago. What role did the Hero Engine play in the development of ESO?

We started ZeniMax Online from scratch, with no employees and no technology. We had to build everything ourselves. It takes a long time to write game engines, especially MMO engines, which are inherently more complicated than typical single-player ones. So, we decided to license the HeroEngine to give us a headstart. It was a useful tool for us to use to prototype areas and game design concepts, and it provided us the ability to get art into the game that was visible, so we could work on the game’s art style. Our plan is for ESO to be a world class MMO, with the most advanced social features found in any MMO to date – so while we were prototyping the game on HeroEngine, we were simultaneously developing our own client, server, and messaging layer that were specifically designed with ESO in mind. Think of HeroEngine as a whiteboard for us – a great tool to get some ideas in the game and start looking at them while the production engine was in development.

Not a game breaker for me, I understand why they chosen to do this and the reason why will be for the better in large scale PvP which is going to be the games bread N butter.

It might also be a trade off for their character creator. It offers many kinds of body shapes, especially in torso part, from fat to arnold. I image it would cause many visual glitches.

Thats not an excuse tho. Ive hated bodypaint armors all my time in wow and Im gonna hate it even more in any "next-gen" game.

    IMHO,

This armor looks pretty decent. :)

I'm alright with how the armour looks, some lack depth and that's a bit of a disappointment but heavy armour is for the most part rather well made. But yes, AoC has a lot more detail to theirs.

Different companies prioritize different things I suppose.

    Very true, actually.

I think they should have gone with less size and width customization and try to just make the races unique in their build. That said, I think it's nice that not every nord will have to be a massive hunk of muscle and brawn. But on the other hand, whom has ever heard of a fat Argonian?

But, I think that the 'Bodypaint' armour in TES:O isn't too bad. And the term 'next-gen' is really nothing you should be using when it comes to MMOs. None of them are next-gen because of the massive development span. But yes, I wouldn't miss the ridding of slim-fit armours.

That's pretty much it. The metal armor "does" stretch. Funny enough, you also see this "issue" in the Dragon Age games.

However, I believe it's because creating separate pieces that move independently of the others as opposed to being a texture that moves and stretches with body would add be a bit too much when you have many players together in the RvR part of the game.

This was actually discussed a while back and this was also the conclusion of that discussion.

    I have to be honest.

I criticised ESO for many things but I like the art style.

It's a mix of Skyrim and Darkfall (the original one) particularly the Orcs.

Some piece of Armor are better than others but overall I think Zenimax did a good job.

Comparing ESO graphics with AoC is not an indication of bad design............AoC Armor Art Style is the best bar none.

I love AoC for the detail and design of the armours.

That said, I never enjoyed mass PvP in AoC - it was uniformely rubbish and required that you turn graphics down to Zelda levels of detail to experience anything other than 3 fps.

I think the compromise Zenimax has made is good enough for me to immerse myself in the look whilst not crashing as I run into 50+ players in a mass skirmish.

Of course, they have to acheive that... but I don't mind the compromises necessary to do so.

We are a decade from networking, graphics processors and servers capable of running AoC levels of detail with hundreds of players on the screen at the same time.

    Patience...
