Quit playing of June of this year and was just curious on what all the Helm's Deep expansion added to the game and how things are now a days since its release.
Yeah you still have to grind out the virtues. They didn't touch those. One positive side effect of the combat being made super easy and fast though is it won't take as long to kill your 500 wargs.

Ugggggh, that almost kills it for me lol.
But, if things die faster then not too bad I guess.
The animations and stuff are a little faster I think but it's mainly a question of you doing so much DPS with the new system that you kill stuff a lot quicker. It will probably be nerfed eventually but game is super-easy mode at the moment...
(at least with the class I play + what I've heard from others.)
Animations are faster and yes most classes are OP at the moment. Captain combat is still really bad. Way too slow and clumsy. LOTRO is a great game though...just a bit dated now. I find myself playing Firefall a lot more these days as the combat is much better and no quests (quests need to go into history). I think the combat changes were sorely needed and that they did not go far enough. Still too many skills on the skill bars.
The war steed handling is too clumsy and that needs to be addressed as well (having ridden horses a fair amount in my life I can tell you the war steeds are no where near accurate to what riding a horse is like). They need to tighten up the mechanics of the war steed.
I would say the changes would be okay (not great, but bearable), except I don't like how trait points in the new system are gated behind deeds.
It used to be, if you used a skill a lot, eventually you would get a trait that made the skill better. If you didn't use a skill, you would miss out on that trait, but it really wouldn't matter, since you never cared to use that skill anyway.
But now, in order to get all the trait points, you have to do every skill deed. This doesn't matter so much at really high level, but it can mean it varies when you get your trait tree's super-skill (you need 30 points to unlock it).
They really should have divorced the trait points from the deeds. Deeds are simply not fun, just a grind, and should not be an integral part of your character like that. They should be optional.
Is there anything in the expansion worthwhile for characters below the level cap? Are the class changes with traits, etc. still active without the expac?

You're telling me. I did find a "workaround" where you tick off the autospeed for the horses and they handle a bit better but sometimes they handle "ok" and sometimes they are unplayable (at least for me).
I like the new expansion as I feel more connected to the Lord of the Rings Story. The new lands are absolutely beautiful from what I've seen.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

You can take part in the helm's deep battles at level 10. You are leveled up but of course you don't quite have the power of a higher level character. I don't know the specifics.

Yeah, I like LOTRO a lot but those slayer deeds are one of its few really bad aspects.
