[Column] WildStar: Snazzy Heals

SBFordSBFord Associate Editor - News ManagerThe Land of AZPosts: 16,585MMORPG.COM Staff Uncommon

In our latest WildStar column, we take a look at tons of new and interesting information about the game that cropped up during the past week. See what's new with WildStar and then head to the comments.

The Esper Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ brought plenty of detailed information about how the class works, but Carbine’s livestream delivered a couple of additional gifts: a tour inside Stormtalon’s Lair (a level 20 dungeon), and some interesting PvP action. If you’ve been desperate to find out how healing will work in an action combat MMO, this is a must-watch.

Wildstar looks so clean and colorful with a lot of personality. However I just cannot get into this art style personally. Perhaps some hands on would persuade me different.

You know what they say, go with what you know.  Its my understanding that a core group left Blizzard to make this game so that explains the art style.  But I have to agree its even more cartoony than wow, with an even brighter, simpler art look.

My eyes cant look at a game that uses mostly fluorescent colors, not for long periods of time.  I'm sure though the game mechanics will be smooth.  But so is maple story.

If the dungeons are typical Wow/Eq style where you have to fight every single creature in them and is only 45 minutes, that sounds like quite a trivial dungeon design to me.Also putting a time distinction on it sounds like it is very one dimensional, how would they know how long it takes when you might have several different class types in your group.

IMO what might make or break it is how in depth the combat system is.Is it nothing more than red carpet tricks or is there a complex system there?Do players walk around the same weapon all the time, same gear and fight every creature the same?As i mentioned is it a ton of trash mobs leading up to one boss that has trickier red carpet treatment?

They do seem to have a smarter thinking dev group than many i see now a days but i will have to see the actual combat before giving it any thumbs up.

You can not only say what you do not want, say what you want in order to receive. Say only and only what you want and you will get it. No mather the cost. The Universe is endless, you are it's child. Games, gaming are a part of the Universe.

Just be fair in all aspects, developers are your kind aswell. And you will get all wishes fulfilled.

You enjoy what they create and they create with joy for you. It is a closed cycle.

At first I hated the art style I went 8 years without playing WoW for the same reason.  However, as I watched more videos got a bit more into what Nexus is I realized nothing else would have fit.  A game that is finally getting away from the you are the hero we must be saved bullshit that every other game has had in recent years.  If Carbine had gone with realistic graphics it would not have fit the humor the game is offering, a gritty true world would have a bad choice for this particular title.

A 45 min dungeon, seriously we are going freaking backwards with these pathetic games calling themselves mmo's, it's laughable.

Don't believe me then go do Khegor`s End in Vanguard, it's the first dungeon you can do on Thestra. It's a level 13 to 18 dungeon that is vast, you can spend two days in that place without killing the same boss twice.

It's also an open group( not a raid) dungeon that delves deep into the earth made by dwarfs.

Things have got to change or stop calling these multiplayer co-ops mmo's plz.

Right now I'm thinking, this game with normal combat mechanics would be awesome. I like almost everything. The art. The humor. The sceneries with long distance views. The theme. Just combat is what annoys me in this game. Being limited to 5 or so abilities seems a bit low. I hope I'll be surprised positively.

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about lol.  You can use 10 abilities.  Not 5.

Whatever, 5, 8, 10, it's still low. Even if it's 10, a few of those will probably be long CD's or situational.

Traditional mechanics gives you much more than 10.

Thanks for comment but it was not helpful

I think being able to switch your abilities out as long as you are not in battle makes the difference with their limited action set idea. Also, watching the videos there seems to be a ton of abilities to try out to find what you like, and not just a few. I'm currently optimistic about it as it reminds me a bit of the TSW system, which I liked.

Because in Vanguard's ancient days the servers probably couldn't handle instancing.

You people expecting some new, ground-breaking MMORPG are going to be VERY upset when you get to play this game..

WildStar is trying to go back to what a lot of us miss, with some more modern features..

Like a Vanilla WoW with modern features, like housing, exploration bonuses, the combat, all the nifty things with a true Theme Park heart..  (ATLEAST FROM WHAT I CAN TELL)

What you say is true, yeah other mmos give you 10 or more that you can stick on your hotbar but really you would only use about 4-5 abilities to damage the target and another 5 would be situational and buffs you maintain. The chance of you using every ability in your spell book in one situation is highly unlikely or never happens. The only time you could use a tone of abilty maybe is PvP

    .

Also the difference here to say in Wow, is you can drop out abilities and pick up others, which will switch up your gameplay, in WoW you have a set playstyle with a set rotation. You can't go "Hmm ill stop using Crusader strike and get something else" because 1, there isn't something else and 2, it would ruin your dps.

There is only so much you can do with action combat before it becomes too tricky for most people to enjoy.  The more complex you want combat to be, the slower it has to become as most of us are incapable of complex decisions made in time spans of seconds.

    lololol.

You are obviously new to mmo's, EQ1 had instancing and AC1 before that.

Vanguard 2007- And instead of releasing with 4-5 dungeons it released with over 100, yeah we are defo going backwards.

If you are going to be smart at least know what you are talking about before hand lol.image

I am very much looking forward to this. I don't really have anything I play seriously at the moment. A little bit of Tera and a little bit of WoW. I like the idea of the spells having to be aimed!

It is dissapointing that its a split faction game with no open world dungeons. But they do seem to be going for the fun factor and 40 man raids should be interesting in both pve and pvp.

I really hope mouse over targeting exists in this game if healing consists of function key targeting party/raid members I'll be passing.

Thank you.  You basically responded with what I had planned to.  People like Jazz always talk about all these abilities.  Yet, half the time in your "traditional" mmos with lots of abilities, people have them macro'ed to 2  or 3 buttons lol.   If they don't have them macro'd, they are rarely using more the 6-10 abilities lol.  This always cracks me up.  And whats not helpful Jazz, is you spouting off about a game you never played.  Especially when you don't even have the facts right.  5 or 10 abilities as you put it is a pretty big difference.
