None of them is outstandingly good imo but most are just plain wankers. Some are OK but they too tend to screw their customers sooner or later with unnecessary changes or revamps or greedy cash shop or whatever.

SP games, Bethesda. For MMOs... dispite some failings SOE has the best track record. Looks like they will be the first to make 2 AAA sandbox MMOs in a row.

    1. CCP because they don't go astray from their initial design just to grab more "cash" (EVE Online).

Also, due to their more in-depth gaming philosophies.

    2. NC Soft; for releasing high-quality games and rarely deliver a horrible game (unlike SOE which is a shit factory; they poop a crappy game every couple of months). Though I dislike NC Soft habit of "abandoning" their games like CoH, Aion and others.

    3. Blizzard; they deliver polished games, very playable and stream lined (which is their weakness also). Their problem is lack of creativity and too much streamlining.

    Funcom hands down

what they made of Age of Conan and Secret World with relatively small indie budgets is simply amazing, love their work

also SOE for SWG and EQN

Definitely ArenaNet hands down. What they've achieved and what they continue to achieve as a team of specialists is simply stunning. Whenever I see people curse at them it makes me cringe :S . It's one of the very few companies that actually cares what the players think. They take player feedback pretty seriously and on the same page they try to innovate as well. And all that without P2W cash shops or ridiculous subscription fees and shit like that.

Sigil Games. R.I.P. (Vanguard: Saga of Heroes)

Pre-EA Bioware. R.I.P. (Baldur's Gate, Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)

Troika Games. R.I.P. (Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Arcanum, The Temple of Elemental Evil)

Obsidian Entertainment. (Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords)

Black Isle Studios. R.I.P. (Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Fallout 2, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2)

Bethesda. (The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim)

CD Project RED (The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings)

Sony Online Entertainment (EverQuest, EverQuest 2, took over Vanguard: Saga of Heroes after bankruptcy of Sigil Games)

Sorry for only mentioning 2 MMO developers, but really I have only tried 2.5 MMOs in total - Lineage 2, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and Guild Wars (which is the half MMO).

Arenanet and Bungie are great. Bioware used to be great, but EA kinda ruined it. "The doctors" left. Blizzard takes other people's ideas and refines them which is OK, but since thats all they do, pretty much, I don't respect them as much. Ubisoft looks better and better in my eyes. They've got some awesome talent there.

SE gets my vote, for admitting failure with a game, rebuilding it and improving on it 100%. They took a huge risk, that FF fans would forgive them and give them another chance.

Pff ... they would've forgiven them even if they dropped another huge flop. (Which they did btw but agreed, its better than the original) Do tell me, after 14 games, how many are actually worth it xD

    OP

It would have been easier if you said  who is the WORST developer

on second thought I don't know if I could narrow that list down to one .

That would indeed be easier. I don't think any company has as bad a record with MMOs as EA.

    I almost threw up.

Age of Conan had a gargantuan budget. It was a major blockbuster MMO release that got featured on fucking prime time sitcoms.

And the game they released, was a steaming pile of garbage.

Not only did they lie about virtually every feature in the game (drunken brawling, aiming your arrows, ect) but what WAS there, was just a cheap WoW clone with tits. Once you left the mandatory 20 level tutorial, the game lost all of its content polish and  momentum.

To me, there is no one best. There are different devs that are the best at certain aspects.

    Like to me-

Turbine has the best designed dungeons. No two are identical. It's about the only aspect of MMO that Turbine excels in compared to the competition.

Blizzard for size and scope of the game world.

Trion for best polish (I didn't play at launch of RIFT, so no clue there)

Funcom for originality (and that only falls in line with TSW)

And a split between En Masse, Turbine, and Funcom for combat.

As I've not played GW2 and a host of other games, I can't speak to them. This is just based off of my experience

They may not really be the worst company in America, but they are the worst game company by a mile.

And I thought LotRO had some of the worst dungeons, because you couldn't access them without quests, they were small, mapped, and linear.

For big huge dungeons that felt scary, EverQuest, DAoC, and Vanguard were all the best. AC was good too.

Bethesda, purely for their back catalogue (the depth and breadth of their games), and freeing them up for user created content.

In terms of MMO's I can't think of a developer that is anywhere close to faultless.  Probably Trion as their F2P model on Rift is one of the best I have seen, plus it was released polished and largely complete.  Defiance obviously has its faults but they were working to someone else's time-frame and the response from the devs was generally helpful and informative.

Clearly Blizzard and Arenanet are the two best publishers because they deliver high quality games MMOs to the public. Arenanet deserves props for delivering a better then subscription quality game and buy to play prices. And Blizzard because clearly their game has pleased millions.

Go play some "SOE" games and tell me how great they are.. Computer science has limits - all that 'sounds great' stuff from SOE is just a bunch of promises they will fail to deliver on - as usual.

LMAO, I was like WTF!!! SOE.... I cannot partake in this topic.  I can't take anyone serious who thinks SOE is a good developer.  There stuff has always been crap and I don't need to justify it, just play the games they speak for themselves.

Planetside 2.  Shooters will be looked at before PS2, and after PS2. Within the genre only Golden Eye can be considered more revolutionary. Playing on a time limited, small 20v20 map, for the sake of score, just seems silly now a days.

If it's not a persistent world with tanks planes, people, mountains and valleys with 100 v 100+ battles that last hours if not days, it might as well be an arcade game.

But that's because there was so little to it. It was just another shallow WoW clone with a big marketing budget. And for FTP model, Vanguard has the best one, easily.

But there is zero development on Vanguard; they only need to pay for the servers and skeleton staff.
