Why is Tera not more popular?

TERA's graphics are better then any game on the market other then probably Final Fantasy Reborn. TERA is linear when you have PVE, Open PVP,  Crafting, Pet System, Alliance System and Political System?  What other themepark offers more? Linear and easy? People hit 80 in GW2 in a couple days then ask what else is there to do.

As for combat its not even a debate anymore. What other mmo has combat where you control everything that happens? If you miss it is because you actually missed and if you hit its because you hit. There are no dice rolls. You have to watch your enemy and time your blocks and dodges. No other mmo combat comes close to TERA's. Feel free to post a video of any mmo with better combat or graphics.

As for the game being more popular it currently  has 17 servers in the west that are high status nearly all the time. Thats better then the majority of mmos out right now.

It's ones of those things where what you read here, really doesn't mesh with what's happening in game. Here TERA is a failed mmo that's dieing and no one wants to play it. Last night goofing around on my lvl 20 mystic I like to go to a channel with as few ppl as I can because I like to herd/kill quests. I had to move to channel 6

That wont mean much to people who don't play but the short version is.... there was a lot of people playing...there are always a lot of ppl playing at every point in the game.

The number one thing that seems to be wrong with TERA is gameforge....glad I live in NA :)

I am curious to know if the op is still playing since its been a little over 2 months.  Im sure he knows by now why its not more popular.  I quit after 3 months from launch because the game was too easy, too solo friendly, crafting was too easy to be credible and the story was nonexistent.  Could have been great with more group play and not having to run from one hub to the next.

I play En Masse TERA so I have no idea how it is on Gameforge. TERA in no way is a failed mmo and it certainly aint dying. Even in Korea it's at #12 when people on this site will tell you its a flop over there.

Its already rumored that Blue Hole is working on a sequel to TERA.

People here have no idea what they are talking about and if you listen to them you will never find a game to play. I had to learn that my self. You can always tell how a game is doing by how its gets content and right now TERA has gotten 3 major updates in the last 3 months. What other mmo has?

What killed it for me was the very poor customizability and very linear affair of it all.
  • VorchVorch Member UncommonPosts: 793

Insanely linear questing, enchantments, and rooted animations.

I loved the lore, but the presentation through quest text was silly.

A TERA 2 is awesome news.... I hadn't heard that but was thinking about it the other day. I will be looking forward to that..and the year we'll probably have to wait for them to westernize it again :(

That is what DamonVile said, in this forum peopel kill any game they can't handle but in reality that game is doing fine if not awesome.

But i DO NOT play tera anymore. i played for about 2 monts got to 60 and quit. Just could not take the blatant Aion copy-paste anymore. i downloaded tera, created character, entered the world in tutorial mode, got my 1st quest and opened the quest log, then my expression was : "WTF is this??". entire quest log book; the settings, how quest are tracked; how quest are arranged; everything was blatant copy of Aion. i thought "ok ok i can go past this, let's continue", so i started doing the tutorial and combat felt like the usual action combat and i thought "nice, finally one open world action mmorpg". tutorial finished and now i am into the main story. i do quests here and there and suddenly i realized i can gather herb and mine too. with some anxious concern i go to collect my 1st herb and again "ohh dear lord!! no!! it is again a blatant copy from Aion". i say to myself again "ok, ok i will get past this. just look at the character i created, my 1st female toon in any mmorpg, just look at her ASS". so i keep going and getting quests and doing them and getting notification every few level that a new story quest is available just like Aion. So i do my best to complete all the quests in that island and then finally into the capital city velika and just like Aion i get a bunch of "guide quest", ok i keep on doing those, someone tells me to use city portals and i tell myself :'yep seen it, done it but i will keep going. i still have to see crafting". then someone asks me to visit crafting trainer and this where my brain tries to become dead, i knew exactly what i had to do even before i talked to the trainer because i did those all in Aion, everything  about crafting starting from trainer's training recipe to ingredients and how we craft; all are just copy-paste from Aion. ok i finish the quest and move on. the next quest send me to visit bag vendor who is a copy-paste of cube vendor in Aion and he does the same  thing as cube vendor; upgrade the size of my backpack.now i go to visit the class trainer and see the ui settings of trainer's skill list; at this point i just realized i should stop thinking about Aion cause then i won't be able to play any further. so i continue, fast forward to level 25 and i did not had the chance to do my last "guide mission" that tells me to go get some glyphs and also upgrade my gears. i go to get some glyphs and again stigma from Aion suddenly  comes to mind, i shake it off and  continue. dungeons are good, open world group contents are hard and rewarding at the same time, so i keep going. fast forward 60 and now the big thing, the nexus time, i prepare myself fro nexus and join others from guild to go for nexus, we mange to complete quests for nexus but by that time i already got heavily anxious and after entering nexus i just lost it, Abyss system from Aion with a slight change in settings. that was it, i just saw what i have been observing these 2 months, i couldn't take it anymore, by the maker, when ncsoft said bluhole stole from them i thought : "f-in ncsoft, trying to ruin someone's life to fill their own pocket" but after playing tera for 2 months and at that very moment i thought "these people deserve to be in jail and they should never make another mmo in their whole life".  despite the beautiful graphics and challenging combat and contents that was what i thought and i will stick to it. i know many of you like it but for me, i really don't want to play a re-skinned Aion.

For me, I thought the story and questing was WEAK.  The combat and stuff is fun but the game fails to keep me engaged.  They really need to get some new storylines going maybe and freshen it up.  The questing and story make the game average.
  • rojoArcueidrojoArcueid Member EpicPosts: 10,722

its too generic and has zero content variety outside of grinding bams, quests, and dungeons.

Even other mmos with the same questing dont feel as heavily generic as TERA. All their PvE leveling progression IS a filler, the developers didnt care about delivering a good leveling experience to carry a Lore from begining to end.

Thats is, in my personal opinion, why the game isnt more popular. And the sole reason why i cant continue to level my 5 characters. I am not interested in their special offer of a lvl cap character because i care about the journey more than what is at lvl cap. I know i am not alone there.

I enjoyed the combat in the game alot, everything else was meh. The things I didn't like specifically were the aesthetics, or the linear-vertical progression.

Only read the part about you getting to 60 and quit. You getting to 60 pretty much says that you enjoyed the game. Who goes from level 1 to max level in a mmo not enjoying it? Cant read the rest of it with out getting a headache from the text wall.

No sir, you are not alone.

the journey for Tera was an unimaginative linear chore which trumped the amazing graphics & engaging combat. I really do miss the animation quality and models, but cannot sit thru a stagnant leveling process.

Also the world itself felt claustophobic. Part in due to the Unreal engine not lending itself very well to a massive multiplayer experience, hence the instances and narrow paths between quest hubs.

No offense but SWTOR's graphics are just plain awful. Tera's are way better.

The EU version sucks, Frogster is a bad company and when i play on NA i get a ping of 150-200, which is bad, especially for a game when timing needs to be perfect.

Only read the part about you getting to 60 and quit. You getting to 60 pretty much says that you enjoyed the game. Who goes from level 1 to max level in a mmo not enjoying it? Cant read the rest of it with out getting a headache from the text wall.

Basically he said Tera is a blatant copy of Aion without the flying, which I actually agree with. I thought I was the only one who thought Tera was very much like Aion.

Aion is a game that I cant stand to play but TERA is one I really enjoy. Guess people see things different.

    I will tell you why.

1.) First when I bought TERA collectors edition when it was Pay 2 Play I was basically lied to by the company they told me I would have the right to freely customize my character the way I wanted instead I found out after purchasing the game for like $100 with over night shipping that  I had to pay like $10 every re customize that I wanted for my character instead of just my flat monthly fee. (The company just quoted their EULA/TOS, and refused to fix their game even after complaints to the "BBB" on their company for false adverts and quoted my their EULA/TOS which Technically I didn't accept as there was a bug when my account was created before the game was ever released I was never required to AGREE. Also their TOS but the game TOS wasn't listed on the exact link listed on the manual inside my collectors edition box so I agree to nothing by using it.

2.) Then if that wasn't enough the UI bug is insane the way the Map system works in game on my monitor is nuts I want a way to turn it off, and better UI Customization like really the game would be great as a F2P Game but what keeps me from playing is the UI Text is too small on my 1280x1024 monitor they have been told since beta to fix this and did not listen it is also just a problem with their game.

3.) Now TERA in its current state sucks all around I can't stand playing TERA I had it installed recently to try it out and not enough changes to make me want to play TERA, instead its worth waiting for Black Desert, Star Citizen, or ArcheAge if these companies do these games right then perhaps they won't fail just as bad as TERA failed.

TERA could have been a great game, and if I were the one making the major decisions for the game and developers doing the coding it would have a lot higher player-base, but Blue-Hole Studios sucks.

I agree with you about the leveling experience and the unimaginative questing, but definitely disagree with you about the world feeling claustrophobic.  I actually felt that the world was laid out quite well, and plenty open enough.  In fact, I didn't find it any less claustrophobic than a game like GW2 when I tried it.

I have mainly only good things to say about TERA.  I only played it for about four months, but I enjoyed the time I did play it.  My main issue with it, and the reason I eventually left, was the horrid questing system.  It wasn't so much that the quests were generic.  We see that in many games.  But there was no variety.  Not even generic variety.  Every quest was simply kill X of Y.  Period.

And ironically, that was TERA's undoing.  It had a GREAT combat system, far better than other so-called "action combat" MMOs like GW2.  I really enjoyed the fact that every decision you made in combat had consequences, and you had to plan out your attacks from everything from which attack to where to position yourself AFTER the attack so that you were in a good spot to finish your combo.  Unfortunately, the questing involved SO MUCH killing X of Y that even the great combat system began to get tedious.  Then you add in all that work you had to do to get to endgame, only to find there isn't much of an endgame, and yeah...I could only take so much.

Still, it's a very solid game for those that don't mind endless mob-grinding.  BAMS are one of the best additions I've seen in an MMO, the dungeons are top-notch and creative, and En Masse is a top notch company.  I just couldn't take that quest system.

The only post I have read that I can see from a person that has really played the game and knows that he is talking about. I agree that most of the quest are kill but that's what I like about it. I am not a quest loveer by any means but if I am doing quest I want to be killing stuff instead of running across the map to tell a npc that  John said Hello and then have to run all the way back to John and tell him I told him what you said.

The reasons why I prefer TERA's questing over any other quest mmo I have played is because when you talk to a NPC and get a quest you don't have to click through 5 or 6 boxes of boring text. Instead you usually get only 1 text box explaining what the npc wants you to do and why. Second reason why I like it is because afther you get the quest your objective is usually around the area of that NPC which cuts out a lot of boring traveling back and forth. The main thing people do wrong in TERA is go around trying to do every quest that they see. That's not the way the game is supposed to played. You stick to the story and do side quest when you want to do them or need to unlock the next story quest. If you go around doing them all you will get burned out bored and out level the content which will leave you felling like there is not a challenge and everything is easy.  I like it but I can totally understand where you are coming from. As for TERA's endgame it seems that the Alliance system is what the endgame is all about. Did you get a chance to check it out?

    That's not even remotely true.

Having gotten to cap in both games I can say that they have the same "kill x quests" but the games feel very different. Heck the worlds are very different.

Don't get me wrong. I did enjoy Tera. I have been thinking about coming back as well when I have some more free time and the patience to download that huge game, and I thoroughly enjoyed the combat a lot more than gw2, but most of their maps were very linear, with too many invisible walls for my taste.

It was actually one of the main complaints early on second to the standard questing model. Not all maps, but most felt like a railroad. Which gave the quest hub gameplay an even more linear feel.

Never-the-less I did enjoy Tera, and would recommend it to anyone into incredible graphics and engaging combat. The lock-in-place casting gave the combat a strategic element VERY rarely found in combat systems similar to Tera. You have to pick & choose your attack and point of attack more precisely.

As for those saying Tera is an Aion clone, that is just ridiculous & untrue.

I am a grinder by heart and I am yet to play a themepark mmo that does not have the same type of questing other then GW2.. Just quit Final Fantasy Reborn at level 40 and the whole time from level 1 it was go kill, go fetch, go talk to or go deliver.  Same as all the rest.
