Oh and because it's probably the second most popular MMO in the west currently, and WoW players generally don't frequent MMORPG.com.

It cannot even compete with EVE, numbers even say SWTOR is making more revenue than GW2 right now.

Now you have made the fatal troll + hater mistake in this post and tried using facts ...which are bullshit . So now we don't care about your opinion  from your first post and we also know you're full of it from your second

Yeah but it also doesn't mean worst either.

It's very difficutl to swallow the idea of a small minority decrying something and saying to the large majority "why do you like it, it's bad?!?!?!".

Well, if someone likes it, it's good. period. The criteria might be different than something the minority considers good/bad but there it is.

Ultimately the guy with the "apple pie" response is pretty much "right on".

MMORPG hits mean nothing.  WoW for example is not even in the Top 10, that should tell you something.  On this site, the most recent MMO is the most popular.

Although GW2 was the most popular game on this site in the last year.  FFXIV was the most popular game on this site for the last 6 months, 1 month, week and today.  The next big hyped MMO will take FFXIV's place eventually and the cycle continues.

On sites like Raptr, which track hours played on MMOs.  GW2 is ranked 4th in terms of hours played (behind, FFXIV, WoW, Rift) based on last month of data.

Hits don't even mean the ppl looking liked the game, it just means they went to that page. On this site the most hated games ever could easily have the most hits.

    It's another useless stat.

I don't think he is that off actually, in terms of Eve in 2012 they made 66 million dollars in revenue.  Let us divide that by 4 and you get 16.5 million a quarter.  In the latest NCSoft quarterly report GW2 made 28 million dollars.

    http://www.ncsoft.net/global/ir/earnings.aspx

    http://evenews24.com/2012/02/23/eve-online-66-million-dollars-in-2012-talks-new-business-models-ipo/

In terms of SWTOR, they said they had 500,000 subscribers in May '13 and I am sure that number has declined.  Let us say 400,000.  Let us assume a subscription fee of 10 dollars.  That would mean 40,000,000 dollars.

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Has-500-000-Subscribers-Sees-Revenue-Increase-351533.shtml

So we can assume GW2 is not blowing Eve out of the water, impressive as it is a 9 year old game.  And SWTOR can easily be beating GW2.  And it is safe to say the next quarter for GW2 will be lower than the previous one.

What you mean cannot compete with EVE numbers?

Not only GW2 has more players than EVE, in terms of revenue GW2 did in 1 year what EVE did in 6 or 7 years.

    http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/21/eve-online-saw-66m-in-revenue-last-year-mulls-ipo/

"Revenue has been growing too, at a compound annual growth rate of 53 percent, bringing in total revenue of $300 million over the game’s lifetime. As for profits, CCP would only say that it has “very healthy margins” — a claim backed up by the fact that it has grown to more than 450 employees despite only raising $3 million in seed funding."

Wait what?  As I said, in the last quarter Guild Wars 2 made 28 million.  In 2012, Eve was making 16.5 million dollars a quarter. Not sure where you are getting your numbers from.

And there is no way to know which game has more players.

  • SoMuchMassSoMuchMass New York, NYPosts: 548Member

One last point to put perspective on the number itself (5,519,402), it isn't a lot.

If 10,000 visitors visited Guild Wars 2 articles/forums etc twice a day for a year the number would be 7.3 million.

So numbers like that for any MMO in terms of "hits" are not impressive at all.

What makes GW2 so popular is in my opinion that it's not just another wow-clone its diffrent.

If you want diffrent then wow then GW2 could be your game. For me GW2 is the best mmo by a landslide but thats because I seek something diffrent then wow.

If you love raiding and tab targeting and a slower pace of gameplay then you will hate GW2.

I played wow just like everybody else and I loved it, but in my heart I am a counterstrike player and love faster gameplay and don't wanna stand still with my char to cast a spell, I wanna run all the time, thats the part I love the most with GW2.

I have played swotr and final fantasy aswell and I am sure they have hardcore fans loving these games and I am happy for them but for me the gameplay is to much World of warcraft.

Sure swotr has by far the best storyline ever made in a mmo and I loved every moment in it but it just didn't last for me.

Another thing GW2 have that nobody has ever had in any mmo is alot of patches being released, new content every two weeks this is one of the main reasons ppl stick around and play the game cause there is always something new to do, you don't get bored in the same way.

Does any other game release that much free material for players? probably not.

It doesn't hurt that you only need to buy the game and it has no subscription fee and that is sweet.

Sure they have a cash shop but there isn't anything that you can buy to be better then everybody else, cash shop have fun stuff mainly like minis and stuff, a few buffs nothing that effects the game.

I't not gonna say that I don't miss playing healing class cause I do, I always played healing in every other mmo I have ever played but you can't get everything right? :)

I play support / survival spec now insteed and it's awesome.

If you haven't tryed the game you should, try it now when it's free so you don't spend cash on something your gonna hate.

GW2 isn't for everybody but then again what game is???? ( except for GTA 5 :)

Off course you don't like that source, because it isn't what you like to see.  But that is what the data shows.  Even on MMORPG, FFXIV has taken over GW2 in popularity (Last 6 months).  On Twitch and other sites, GW2 has no presence.

I would put GW2 in the same tier as SWTOR in terms of popularity.

Its true that FFXIV has taken alot of players from GW2 and WOW and all the others but in 6 months I am betting that FFXIV will have dropped alot cause of the lack of content.

People are already starting to complain about the lack of things to do in FFXIV so if squarenix doesn't deliver soon there will be nobody playing anymore.

GW2 still has a huge player base and it has passed it's first year online, in a year from now they will still have a huge player base and I don't think FFXIV will even be close to them. I hope the boys from squarenix delivers to there players soon for the games sake and mainly for there fanbase. A game like FFXIV should be Epic and in my opinion it's just another wow clone with better graphics but nothing to do in it more then lvl another char after you hit 50 in two weeks.

I love the final fantasy world alot and I have played almost every game they have released and I have loved them but this game just doesn't give me anything to do.

FFXIV will be F2P within a year and the cash shop will be horrible, thats my prediction and I hope I am wrong.

My intention was not to compare games, my point was in MMORPG.com the most hits are based on the next big MMO.  Next year it will be WildStar or ESO.  RIght now it is FFXIV, last year it was GW2.

I think GW2 has a similiar player base as SWTOR to some that is huge, to others probably not.  Regardless, no MMO is going to grow in he current market.  There is way too much competition.  Not WoW, not SWTOR, not FFXIV, not GW2.  And in the future not WildStar and ESO either.  But all MMOs in the market including GW2 will take a big hit when WildStar and ESO launches.

All these MMOs will peak during launch and decline.  Just a fact of the market.  This isn't 2004 anymore where there was no competition and MMOs had room to grow.

    This.

Of course fanbois will just rabidly defend positive numbers, saying cuz the game is really that good to receive so many hits, while haters will just derail the thread with irrelevant data. Once such stats are disputed (bots designed to click that game's site continously, one same reader's every click is considered "unique", etc), fanbois will then just claim "It is just another useless stat, move along!".

Same with "stats" like the Xfire nonsense. If the number is skyrocket high, fanbois will claim the game is the next holy grail. Once the number drops drastically, suddenly the same fanbois will just claim "it is just another useless stat".

The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

Raptr is so high in Raptr because of the promotion that gave rift+expansion+1 month sub if you played 14 hour or so of Rift.

FFXIV is high because it has just been released - for sometime people liked to come to the GW2 forums and say "look GW2 is behind WoW, Rift and Neverwinter".

If you use XFire instead, FFXIV has already gone behind GW2 and even at its high in hours it had half the player numbers.

But I have to agree, Raptr and Xfire are just too small that noise (like a promotion) can skew results.

    3Q12 GW2 made around $42M, 4Q12 GW2 made around $110M. 1Q13 GW2 made around $33M and 2Q13 GW2 made around $26M. So that is around $210M in less than 1 year.

By the end 2011, 8 years after launch, EVE all time revenue was $300M, so saying GW2 in 1 year made the same as EVE in 6 or 7 years seem a solid statement.

Second I wasn't saying anything about GW2 blowing or not EVE out of the water - I was simply claiming that in fact EVE doesn't beat GW2 in revenue nor players (sure, the player estimation comes from the fact that in both raptr and xfire gw2 has 3-4x the number of hours logged and based on EVE concurrency numbers).

I think he is trying to say that, without box sales and in game store nonsense, SWTOR can earn $4,000,000 per month, while GW2's earning is $0. Obviously, $40,000,000 is a 10 month earning from 400,000. He just did not put that facts in. image

SWTOR has 400,000 naive gamers who will still pay a monthly subscription, while GW2 has nearly 4 million intelligent players who, in "best" case, purchased the game and play free forever (of course this is not the case, as there are still senseless whales throwing money at ANet so that other gamers can play for free totally).

Probably that is why GW2 has to "work" so hard to come out a whimsical update every 2 weeks to attract the fickle gamers, while SWTOR just sit on the armchair, count the money from BOTH subscription and in game store purchase, then toss an expansion every year just to please the subscribers, then it's back to the armchair.

So back to topic, GW2 with a game update every 2 weeks in mmorpg.com, it is not hard to see that high of a unique hits. image

And GW2 sell boxes and in game store items (which SWTOR also sells and if I'm not mistaken they charged some money for the first expansion of SWTOR that is now free for subscribers).

    Revenue is revenue.

GW2 also had 10 million unique hits before release (no updates every 2 weeks), it is just a popular game including for GW2 haters.

Also, most of the updates every 2 weeks are in the news forums not in the GW2 forums, do those also count for each individual game?

Yes, revenue is revenue. There is a difference between sustained revenue and slipping revenue. You have already come up with an obvious fact so I am not going to produce one.

10+ million unique hits before the "2 week updates" cycle? Now slightly more than half of hits it used to have after the cycle, which also include "a massive amount of haters clicking" as most fanbois claimed? GW2 has to work harder. SWTOR is laughing its ass off with the monthly subscription $$$ without putting in any effort, while having even more haters lol.

I'm not sure what Anet plans are - it seems they are debating if they will release an expansion free or paid.

But I can see a paid expansion of GW2 netting another $50M-75M.

And paid or free, an expansion announcement (especially with Guild Halls and/or housing) would bolster the unique hit number.

Also, I don't see how a monthly subscription is a sustained revenue - it is as sustained as someone spending x amount in the cash shop every month.

Fine, fine, your opinions is yours. As long as there are no facts, there is nothing to counter.

The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
