"Wow. What a game, Age of Wushu. I mean, I have played many, many open-world, free-for-all PvP sandboxes in my time before this one, but Age of Wushu places all of those cool systems in a world that the West generally doesn't play in and then adds in little systems so that there is always something to do. Always. In fact the most common complaint I hear about the MMO is that there is too much to do but not enough explanation to cover all of the activities."
sidenote - Wushu is a different animal. As far from WoW, as EVE is from SWTOR. If you run into a rival, and for whatever reason, the time is right (the time is not always right. civil ffa world), a battle begins, and you lose, a little part of you dies irl.

Wow that's a tough one. The first time I stole a script, becoming Head Master of Tangmen, last months Mount Hua competition.
Mount Hua was pure adrenalin that had been building for literally a month, knowing I was going to fight in front of hundreds of people who knew me. I won the first match, and forfeited the next... My gf had just got home, and I went up to say hi, not knowing my next match was next...
My first time stealing a script was mind blowing. It changed the way I looked at western developers. It took 8 years of mmorpg experience, i kid you not. It was nothing like anything I've experienced in a mmorpg. Running into a complex 2 times as big as Stormwind, then fleeing a zone larger than Elwynn forest, with hundreds of Stormwind protectors (players) chasing me. Having to jump off waterfall falling 6 seconds (felt like 2 minutes) into a river below, had to be the most pure fun.
Becoming Head Master of Tangmen was the most rewarding thing. It was a mix of the first two. The adrenaline of being a new player during the competition, the shock of winning, the the humbling experience of winning the peoples vote over the incumbent Head Master was amazing. Something I do not think I will experience in any new mmorpg anytime soon.

The game sounds highly entertaining and I shall be sampling its pleasures shortly. Kidnapping sounds like fun.
Is there a lot of diversity in terms of how you can build your character?
How many can fight at once? Does combat function well with a lot of people?
9$ per month. I've never bought anything from the cash shop. All in game. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should, especially for a new player. In total over the last 10 months I've spent 54$.
thats why i stopped playing this game. I love it, but you cant buy anything in the cash shop. You have to rent everything....you know, renting? like a subscription. So if you want a horse, and bigger inventory you have to subscribe to those items. COnstantly paying for them so they dont disappear.
Thats garbage and if i have to commit to a subscription it will be for a game of higher quality and no cash shop.
Hundreds can and do fight at once. The Wushu engine is extremely optimized. I often run two clients with 4mb of ram. There is culling though, in a strange way it almost makes sense. Lets say you are kidnappiing and some do gooder trys to catch you. You can run through the market and disappear in the crowd lol. It's a welcomed trade off at times.
Everything in the cash shop can be bought in game.
Yeah it does feel like a monthly bill for mounts, but the bill is payed for with in game silver. Snail does offer shortcuts, but that doesn't mean you should take them. It's like "You no wan work in game? You pay lots (i mean lots) of dollar, we give you break"
Would the game be better without a cash shop? I think so, but wouldn't they all.
How smooth is the pvp? I think it's "action" combat correct?
I tried the game for 10 minutes during beta but everwhere I went there was a cash shop promo and, at the time, it seemed that I couldn't quite figure out what to do though I was being "sold to".
What is the death penalty?

i dont mind the cash shop. What kills my desire to keep playing is that you cannot play without expanded inventory, and wearing the same clothes forever gets tiring really fast. I dont mind purchasing inventory bags and armor skins, the problem is that you have to keep paying that prices constantly to keep the items. THey give a lot of gifts (which is nice), but there is a strategy there. They fill your tiny inventory with gifts (mostly potions and boost pills) so you have to consntantly pay (and renew) the extra inventory.
I dont remember the cash shop prices, but i'll make up some numbers just to give an example. Lets say armor skins cost 10 dollars, inventory bags cost 5 dollars, a horse cost 20 dollars. you need 8 extra inventory bags (2 bags per inventory tab since each tab is for different items only) in order to have enough space. THat is 40 dollars in bags only + 20 for the mount + 10 for one armor skin. Thats a total of 70 dollars you have to pay every time those items run out of time and disappear (either every month, or every 15 days, or every 7 days depending which renting time you choose). Add that amount to anything else you want to purchase.
Again, i dont remember the real prices, those numbers were made up for the example.
It's not action combat in the sense of Tera or Darkfall. It's more in the vain of TSW and GW2 tab target that you dont have to use with a lot of non-target abilities. Unlike GW2, and TSW, Wushu has active blocking and is a true rock paper scissor system. Feit breaks block, charge restrains feint, block blunts charge. Add in the freest form movement I've played in a world where everything you see is playable, you have something pretty darn cool.
On the surface there isn't much of a death penalty. You lose some bound silver. However different situations carry different penalties. If you are trying to get in the Mount Hua competition, if someone of a different alignment kills you, they take your invitations. If you are escorting a guild cart, and someone kills you and robs, it you lose guild funds and XP pills. If someone kills you while kidnapping you lose the silver you would have made.
Here's a pretty good look at the combat.
As a western gamer it came as a shock to me too. True to form though, I've played the game as a western gamer and have only payed the sub. Buy everything in game the the earnings I've made by playing. Would the game be better without a cash shop? I think so. I'm happy I don't have to use, but I would like for other to not have the option to use it. Plus there wouldn't be goldseller spam, which is the biggest blight on an absolutely gorgeous game world.
The monthly Mount Hua tournament is tonight! 32 of the best compete to see who is the best the server best. Mount Hua is a 1v1, 2 out of 3 tournament with full spectator mode including first person view, with prizes for those who watch. There where 1000 spectator tickets for sale, and all 1000 sold out.
Above is a video of one matches from last months Mount Hua. I was kind of in shock at the way this thing is hosted. I didn't think about show other camera views. I plan to record tonight. I also think I will be able to link a lice stream.
