    They became hardcore.

People banding together with adventurers became 500 member strong multi-game ranked whatever...

This isn't a hard logic to follow but I guess some people just don't want to put in the 'effort'. Ironic isn't it?

You can't recreate the absence of options.

uh? Why would anyone want to create the absence of options?

Options are good. If no one pick the option that you like .. well ...that is not the fault of the option, is it?

I'm still trying to find the logic of 'it is too hard' as an excuse but complain that no one else (course it cannot possibly be themselves) will do it.

I think it's a little easier said than done to just create a guild like the old day. It doesn't just completely depend on the creators...

It seems ppl like nariusseldom arent into mmorpgs at all... I think an arpg or other similar lobby based multiplayer ( or solo) games are what ur looking for... Mmorpgs are supposed to be massive non intanced worlds so u can play with thousands of other players in 1 world... Not a glorified lobby

That is your definition. But, the MMO genre has moved forward and evolved into many different types of games. They may not be games you like, but that doesn't change the fact they are considered MMOs. The fact is, the vast majority of people like how MMOs are now.

You are right. I am not into mmo at all. I just give them a chance since the devs seem to want to make them into lobby gamse, and solo games. There is no reason for me to discriminate them, just because they are not a ARPG, and that they use a city instead of a lobby.

I don't really care what MMORPGs are "supposed to be" .. but if a dev makes them into a glorified lobby games and beg me to play by plastering "free to play" all around, i don't see any reason not to take advantage of it. Do you?

Not hard to figure out, the same thing that happened to every other core MMORPG feature. WoW.

Guilds used to serve a purpose. In complex games with high risk vs reward ratios and harsh worlds, a guild helped anchor you. They showed you the ropes, they helped you with items, and quests, and navigation. They helped you get your corpse, your cloudsong, your Khaos Shield. They organized your dragon raids, your sieges and RvR battles.

But then MMOs became about solo grinding quests and then going into instances. Instancing (especially in LotRO) and their quest system makes it nearly impossible to play with friends, much less guildies. MMOs are about soloing now. Guilds are just a formality, usually just there for the chat box, but now there's global chat so...

How many of you are in guilds and have seen guilding detriorate?

My hope is we as players change back to the team oriented guilds. Where friendships last and the guild lasts longer.

The problem is broader than that.

Those types of guilds don't exist anymore because they have no reason to.  Modern MMO's are so solo centric, that only in very extreme and rare circumstances are you actually required to work together to accomplish something.

Good guilds are still around.  You just have to look for them, taking the easy way out and joining massive zerg guilds or mass advertised guilds will never end well.  The guild I have been a part of for the last 3 years and has existed since UO does not spam, hell won't even post in guild recruitment forums.

Shit, we don't even have a web page or forums and likely never will.  Everything is conducted through vent/mumble.  Recruits are actually tested, dueled and interviewed before acceptance and require a guild sponsor,  someone to guide the noob and get them trained up to an acceptable level.  Along with this is a lengthy probation period where they can also be blackballed by any member.

Because of these standards we are a top guild on any server in any game we choose to play and we stay that way.

Of course options are good but the lack of them is what also created strong guilds and dedication.

You couldn't get anything done without them.  It's what kept players in an MMO for years and years.

You could call that a phony or fake atmosphere that forced players to get along in pursuit of gear but that wouldn't be fair is some regards.

    Bumping the right answer.

    Personal opinion, 2 reasons:

    1) As others have stated, guilds are for the most part not mandatory to enjoy most new MMOs. That means there's less reason to commit to a guild.

    2) While it relatively easy to get into a crap guild, getting into a good guild seems to require more paperwork and commitment than most real world jobs. Filling out applications, giving references, probation/internship periods, etc. Yeah, that sounds like SOOOO much fun to be had.

  • ste2000ste2000 Member EpicPosts: 6,194

Who needs guilds when you can solo every MMO nowadays?

That's also the reason why all MMOs fail.............. but Devs still don't get it.

Why would that be a problem? The whole guild can move to another game, or even a guild can play multiple games.

Nothing, things changed over years. LFG & rest. However being in guild (even with real life friends) never helped me a lot because of my time schedule, usually all were already busy with some raid or alike. Companies had to decide, make a lot more money and make millions of players happy or give up big money and make happy few thousands of players. Wind of change simply. :-)

To be honest from time to time still missing mmo's being more "social", but at the end I prefer PLAYING. I still socialize a lot, but away from keyboard. Is better.

At my time socialising meant going OUT to play soccer or other sport together, cinema, just talking, .... What has happened to all this? Gone. Now there are sms's, emails, fb, .... From this perspective however I miss old times. But not in gaming.

  • Kevyne-ShandrisKevyne-Shandris Member UncommonPosts: 2,077

Guilds for the most part are there as an excuse for socializing in MMOs, now.

I created my own guilds because what serves as a guild these days is but a place for drama, power plays and other social mischief. I'm not paying for that junk. Nor am I going to work a full time job to run it.

Finding decent players in a game -- decent not only in social skills, language -- takes forever to find and I'd really rather just play with family and RL friends, instead. People you know, grew up with and culturally not foreign.

The Goons and TEST (and Band of Brothers before them) is all what's wrong in EvE and games that support mega stupid guilds.

Do you want to "raid" with guys like this?

Filthy mouthed, racist and just socially so inept -- and pay for it?

    Heck, no.

    This post is factually false.

Grath isn't part of Test or Goons. He is from Pandamic Legion.

Yeah. That is why i play them solo mostly.

That means the game design is shallow.

The most important reason to be in a guild in Wushu is because of the collective knowledge. No one person knows everything. We constantly ask each other questions. This leads to 20 people from 15 different time zones on Team Speak during the middle of the day.

    Actually, true.

That ship kill was a result of the Fountain war that involved Goons and TEST. That attitude and behavior IS the face of guilds and corps.

I've played many MMOs (and before it MuDs), and EvE is the only one that is so blatant racist. Guys act like they lived in the segregated South with the mouths to prove it. Don't think Garth is the weirdo, since that junk can be found in the various other corps that are on either the Goons or TEST payroll.

So just stop spinning the BS.
