Breaking Immersion? - Hawaii Shirts, Sports Cars, Anime Posters?

TybostTybost Member UncommonPosts: 629

SLIGHTLY NEW THREAD DIRECTION: 9/13/2013

Shifting the direction of the thread, towards whether or not the game still looks like fun to you. Would you pay full price, or a subscription fee, or perhaps toss money at your screen at a cash shop, after hearing these slightly immersion breaking things...... that is... if they are immersion breaking to you at all?

Question 1: Do you still want to play Archeage, after the addition of being able to make superman and hawaii shirts or did this sort of thing make you turn away from the game.?

Question 2: Did they go to far with sandbox? - Bikni + Beach Parties + Sports Cars + Starbucks - Upload anything you want, to your shirts, houses, an boats = Immersion Breaking for you?

- - -  Old Post Below - - - 9/08/2013

In my eyes, players destroy Immersion, but can also create immersion. Such as creating guilds, and taking territory, having things run by the players, for the players. and true in archeage we may have sports cars, and hawaii and superman shirts, but we also have Lord of the rings, Game of thrones, Hunger games, Player made content! - Legions of armies formed, to either rule the seas, or the lands. Guilds claiming territory, while waving lannister flags, or even underwear flags if you will.

Archeage is a game to look forward too, with the most epic roleplaying we may ever see. It depends on the houses that represent. Imagine representing a certain trading company, or perhaps those douche lannisters that always pay their debts.

Here is a link to a fan made guild trailer, which shows off the level of epicness you can really get in this game. Below is a trailer of a guild in archeage called "The Black Storm Legion!" Comment by Crusader - //This is a guild, making a video that showcases their conquering of the new content in the game. Inadvertently it shows how awesome ArcheAge is!//

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqWqk3UXncM

The below is a picture which id label as an immersion killer, including hawaii shirts, and sports cars, to coca cola vending machines. it is a slight immersion-murderer, maybe developers are plotting to ruin the game, which we each have set our gaze upon, and it goes even beyond that. Players themselves are allowed to upload images as textures to customize the house that they own. But if you can look past the players uploading pictures of adult related images to customize a house they created. Then you get the link above and think as you should, players are both the reason why this game can be amazing, and can also be why the game is less than stellar. That trailer shows off, the true epic feeling that you can get in this game.

...Themeparks and sandboxes and starbucks? - OH MY!

Where do you stand with archeage, are you looking forward to it? or did the hawaii shirts/sports cars/anime-soft porn house textures/images ruin it for you?//

Thank you for taking the time to visit this page, it's really been a long time since iv made a thread!  //Almost 2-years!!!//

That's the reason why most are starting to pass on Archeage, the point of the video is suppose to show you, that even though it allows full customization, to uploading any picture at all and paint it outside of your house, shirt, ship. You can still get around it all, and just have fun.

I believe allowing anyone to fully customizing 'SOME' things, can be both good and bad. Mostly what I listed above in red was the bad, but think of the GOOD that can be done with it. Are you really going to let a couple of nude girls painted on sails, and captain planet displayed on a front door ruin archeage for you?

Just check out that trailer video made by that guild, look at how epic it is and how the scenes were captured. Also take a look at the other videos, showing how beautiful the world is.

Overall I do agree with you, I wish they never added in sports cars, and these immersion breakers. I'm just trying to look on the bright side of things.

Inevitable if you give freedom to players. You either set some rules for RPing and see people complain that it is not a sandbox, or you give them free hand to do anything they want and you see dick towers and hentais on walls.

I guess people just want dick towers and softporn on their houses. The evolution of genre!

Obviously if ever, you would play this game for fun, not for immersion, since it is not possible unless you lock yourself in a isolated area that doesn't have that nonsense but it kinda ruins the whole massive part of the game in that case.

  • LlexXLlexX Member UncommonPosts: 200

Another thread about this "immersion breaking", they just keep coming.

It is called player made content where the tools are given to the players to freely make/customize their own stuff, this is a real sandbox element.

If this freedom of customization is to much for you, than just go and play one of those freedomless themepark MMO's like ESO, GW2, etc.

And how can some of you tell, that some features, the car for example is breaking the immersion while you don't have a single clue about the Lore of AA. These are "Mecca" machines which have a steampunk look and are controlled via magic forces, and there is much more of them in the lore than just the car and the submarine.

If the half naked anime chicks are also part of the lore I think this is some very interesting universe :) Just confirms what I said, you need to give total freedom, or players like this man I am quoting over here will complain that they are not allowed to do whatever they want.

It is not funny, we can see only what is given to us. The game is not released yet and no one even tries to bring attention to it anymore. It went silent. I can't try the Korean version, it is not possible for me. Only thing I see is what youtube offers me... I have to base my opinion on something, I won't buy pig in a poke.

Developers need to control the content to some degree or you just end up with a mess.  Parts of the game are going to look like Bladerunner.  Its going to be busy and messy looking, and full of gold farming ads and all kinds of other things I don't want to see in my online experience.

Plus its F2P with a cash shop, just no thanks.  Passing on EQN as well.

Bladerunner was a majestic depiction of a dystopic future completely ruled by capitalism and a lack of morals, after horrendous pollution. It had overwhelming grit, a feel of multiculturalism, and dark hues in the civilians actions, it was cramped and overpopulated and messy. It. Was. Great.

That aside I agree, this isn't a dark futuristic fantasy or dystopic piece and those things don't fit in with the kind of high fantasy setting it is. I believe there should be some GM/Developer/Authority control.

Kujo's latest post pretty much sums up my reply to you, we can only see what is shown to us via videos, and pictures from various sites. My opinions are based off the images that were posted from korean developers or beta testers. As far as I can see, we are dwelling into September with no new threads made for Archeage on MMORPG. People are abandoning ship, although most certainly not me.

The freedom of the customization is going to be amazing, what you see in the video that I continue to link, and will link again below. Is a guild that is using the freedom to customize in the right way, also displaying how epic things truly are in the game. if they are able to turn Archeage into something as epic as that guild has displayed for us. Maybe we shouldn't judge so early on a couple of bad tasting images.

I'm curious if those who have decided to abandon ship, take a look at a couple more videos and realize. That maybe it's not all nude girls sailing, and its more than just immersion. I'm not logging a single minute in if the game is not fun, but with these customization bonuses. I see them as a plus and minus, we don't know if its the whole world painted as a starbucks, or as DMK posted 99.999% does not show what we see on the very first page.

Here is the link once more, to show off what really shines in the game.

Its funny to me that people see ONE isolated location and think the entire world looks like that.

Heck FFXIV has lalafells all over the place - to me that is more immersion breaking.

The 99% statement is somewhat true; this stuff can only happen in housing areas, but almost each of them look like a crappy mess, with coke vending machines, hip hop beats playing and anime girls on posters.  For me this is very immersion breaking. The key point, for me at least here, is consistency. For example, in a "game" like second life, i dont mind the same mess at all, i enjoy it. I could also immerse myself in a game, where everything is set in that or another particular theme.

In Potbs there is player created content, too. You can customize your ships sails for example. But the images have to be approved and must have a certain style - consistent with the game and time period. The devs even provide tips and advice. Sandbox freedom and certain rules do not cancel each other out in my opinion.

I seem to remember one of the first rule of sandbox game design is, "What's the minimum freedom players are given before giant, flying penises are zooming around the skies?"

Genre-blending can go wrong however: Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot

"This doesn't always work. If the cool things somehow cancel each other out, if it's just so overwhelming the Willing Suspension of Disbelief snaps like a brittle twig, you may get left with a piece of camp that is at best funny and at worst disgusting. Just remember Strong Bad's words of wisdom: "Too much of a good thing is an awesome thing. But too much of an awesome thing is...umm...really, really dumb and bad." "

Probably depends on how creative vs how lazy it turns out on creating it's own "thing"?

Who doesn't want a fun game?

Immersion to me is everything, let me explain a little deeper!

Dwelling into lets say WOW for example: you're presented with two options and that's either representing the alliance, aka the side of good. or representing the horde, aka the side of evil.  Imagine as you're playing the game, you decide to create a guild, as you pick up a charter to get signatures, walking through the door on the wall, suddenly a wild Andy Dick GIF appears doing yoga.  AHHH!!!!!!

It's like playing SIMS or TOTAL WAR for more examples, while playing any SIMS game, I find myself somewhat immersed into the game, building a second life or when I'm playing Rome Total War, it feels as if I'm a General leading my men, into a battle full of glory and death. It is truly  immersive. This goes for STAR CITIZEN as well, which is going to be a prime example of immersion done right in space, it will truly display immersion in which we have never seen.

When I first saw Archeage, I was in awe with the navel combat and sailing. my interest was logged immediately, I'm sure it will still bring plenty of 'Fun' to the table. However once they announced Beach Partys, I raised an eyebrow. You see even just that, with characters in bikini's dancing having 'fun' on the beach in a time of WAR?

    NOOOOOOOO! A TIGER BIKINI FUCKING SERIOUSLY? - Look@TheBackground ._.

are you fucking serious? - then came sports cars.... and then allowing to upload anything you want to the housing feature and even sails if accepted. Although let me take a step back, as Iv never played the game before, and those who have played it, are saying you simply do not see most of this stuff in most of the game. I'm sure it will bring an element of fun, while destroying the immersion element.

Don't even get me started on the Oculus Rift which is basically going to be the biggest thing in 2014 - next year will be all about immersion.

To put it bluntly - Keep HELLO KITTY ADVENTURE and ANDY DICK out of my immersion, but I know that when I walk through a couple of houses, this is what I may just see. The game will still provide fun, and this uploading anything you want may devalue a bit of immersion, it still has all the features that logged my beginning interest, but I really don't want to run into some of these things. You know?

It's breaking immersion, by the way. If you want that tiger bikini above for your character, expect to pay a premium for it. Just guessing, you never know.

Look at the first comment on this thread, when he heard of this he instantly said he will not be buying Archeage. You want to know why? IMMERSION BREAKER/BIKINI PREMIUM. Maybe even to upload pictures on your sails, you may need to pump cash to unlock that feature. We simply do not know, and these sports cars....ugh......talk about the wrong direction for the game to sail in!

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

Ill guarantee you, if they didn't announce the beach parties and sports cars, and stuck to bringing immersion to players. It would be much bigger right now over here, and so many more people would be wanting to play. Players were lined up, wanting to play the game, for me personally the moment I saw the sailing feature, and vast sea of open world goodness, and the kraken to top it all. It had me logged into it with burning desire to play the shit out of the game. I still want to play it of course, but seeing the direction its going in. This direction is unwelcome for me, they're preparing for a crash grab, I want to stay immersed in the game, without running into a starbucks, or dare I add 7eleven or Kmart.

Don't worry guys, they have more than just a tiger bikini! -  Here is the  polkadot bikni!

$6.95 for two 30-Day outfits = Calling it now! [You Never Really Know...it could happen]

From my own social group, I can't really say anyone is jumping ship.  Although it has been nearly 2 months since Trion released any info on their progress, so there just isn't very much to discuss.

There are new guides popping up on places like ArcheAgeSource, but without an English version game to try them out, it would only be depressing to link them.

From the demos a ways back, there is some progress in the translations ..  Trion probably mismanaged their resources with less popular titles recently, and as a result, some people got a big smack on the rear-end, aka restructuring, layoffs.  They just overestimated Defiance and the TV show, and didn't realize the potential of ArcheAge.  Whoops!

As for immersion, it is what you make it out to be.  It's not the game that breaks immersion, it's the players.  Same with any game.  Is Chuck Norris discussion crucial to being a success in WoW?  Nope - players, not the game, allowed that to happen.  Good for Norris I guess though, since he got a high paying commercial spot.

It someone takes issue with Bikini's being immersion breaking .. wow, just wow.  What are you proposing?? swimming nude, or swimming with 100 pounds of heavy armor on?  You have got to be joking.  Lightweight swimwear is ... tada!  Practical! (thus immersive and believable).

The solution to some of these quote "immersion breaking" features is really simple. RP servers. Guarantee Trion adds them.

People are whining over nothing. Trion has proven to cater to the RP crowd. Look at all the RP friendly features they added to RIFT.

I'll probably still play on a regular server since I like variety. But for dedicated RP'ers, AA is the game you should be looking to.

Old school gamers who dismiss this title because of sensational threads are doing themselves a disservice.

    The virtual world is AMAZING.

Bikini's aren't breaking immersion, beach parties, and uploading dicks to walls are in my opinion. I was just hinting towards a future premium, cosmetic cash grab in the future. It was meant as a slight-mild joke as a couple of games that come from grinding fairyland, take the premium route towards cosmetic items. Characters have undergarments, but what you need to realize, is that the Tiger Bikini and Polka Dot swimsuit is just one or two step away from bunny ears, and devil tails, angel wings, and anime related crap.

If you take a fireball to the face, do you expect your character to fall to the ground screaming? which would be really neet to add, an actual reaction. Most games do not go that far to create such detail, if you walk on snow, do you expect a snowprint to appear? To my knowledge Archeage does not feature weighted armour, that affects your character, if you fall into the sea and drown/sink, due to heavy weighted armour.

Players break immersion, and Chuck Norris talks are inevitable in every game. A good reason why in most games, I do my best to ignore the chats. Hopefully being able to do the same with these additional features, players can also bring in immersion as well.

    Wouldn't you agree?

EDIT: I'm unable to find were iv posted about having an issue, about bikini's in the game being immersion breaking. I don't think I directed the post that way? The focus is on Beach Parties & Starbucks & Future-7Eleven - Does having a starbucks in your game, break immersion for you? It's in the game, and so will andy dick. mark my words.

EDIT 2: I know you think I'm hinting towards TRION, doing a future premium cosmetic cash grab similar to snailgames 30-D timed cosmetic item cash shop. but to be honest I really don't know TRION that well, and I'm sort of just poking at games that come to the western side with these horrific shops. I have no real proof or any of the sort, that it will happen or not.

POLL HAS BEEN ADDED TO FRONT PAGE

DO YOU STILL WANT TO GIVE ARCHEAGE A TRY?

    SLIGHTLY NEW THREAD DIRECTION: 9/13/2013

Shifting the direction of the thread, towards whether or not the game still looks fun to you. Would you pay full price, or a subscription fee, or perhaps toss money at your screen at a cash shop, after hearing these slightly immersion breaking things...... that is... if they are immersion breaking to you at all?

After hearing these things about being able to upload any photo you want to your house/boat/shirt. Did this make you want to play the game more, or less?

    Discuss!

Swimsuits are present in every MMO, some of them it's called underwear (when you take off all your clothes), in others like Tera it's called "plate armor" :p

Regards to importing Starbucks and half nakie anime chics, that's why I brought up RP servers.

Trion can limit what is kosher to import on an RP server. No different than choosing an RP name that fits within the fantasy realm.

Again, ya'll are making something out of nothing, imo.

Like I seriously think there should be one big thread stuck on the top of the forums made specifically so everyone can go cry about how this isn't a western game some more. idk why people remain surprised and announce to the world that they're too good to play it like the game is instantly going to disappear just because your presence won't be found.

Just about every ported K-mmo with these aspects are still around with players who enjoy them. AA will be the same, so let's let it go.

Or maybe we can start more threads about it, since I have a few lines left on my list..

I think it's a healthy thing to continue talking about a game, more threads means more attention to the game. It's nice to have everything organized and in one single thread. If you have a problem with how things are said and done in this thread, than all that can be said is have a good day.

Two threads created this month, six-hundred-fifty overall in Archeage's arsenal. I thought it would be good to have a more direct attack on peoples thoughts, about the introduction to a full sandbox experience, which allows the player to upload nearly anything they want to some things in the game.

If you don't like what is being discussed in this thread, than again have a good day regardless.

Also a late reply to the polkadot bikini's replies: It really does not matter, please keep the focus on the real topic at hand. Starbucks in our Archeage, and sports cars included. Maybe nobody gives a shit about immersion, and more so about fun? Iv never played the game, therefore my view is limited on the KOR game same as most who have viewed, but it cant hurt to talk about some things. If you do not wish to make a post on topic, be sure to vote on the poll on page one.

Immersion is going to be a very important thing in the future, and while archeage may not feature such immersion. I'm curious as to why some people have as iv been saying. "Jumped shipped" aka. the first post on this thread. "I'm not going to be buying Archeage after this." Yet not everyone is reacting the same way, me included!

    Thanks!
