it can mean lots of things to lots of people but when talking about EQ i think its very likely they are talking about EQ1 type unforgiving (simulated world) type gameplay, at least i hope
I think the terms "hardcore" and "sandbox" have positive viewer reactions these days so marketing is using them.
By contrast, what game advertises itself as an "awesome casual themepark experience".
Good point..Although, isn't that what Anet did for GW2?
Yep and there is nothing hardcore about the game except a few dungeon encounters and maybe a few jumping puzzles... It's also quite popular.
"Hardcore", what ever that mean, usually equal not for everyone. The fact that they put it on the beta description shows that SOE doesn't expect Everquest Next to please everyone.
That's uplifting. Some of the best MMORPG's that I stuck with for years were, at least to some degree, hardcore.
This will make the casual crowd unhappy though, since they possibly won't have instant access to everything. I could see the original EQ being labeled as hardcore, compared to todays softcore limited longevity MMORPG's.
But I guess I have to wait 'til this weekend to have a clearer meaning.

Beta is coming soon and they're calling the game a hardcore experience.
Let's bring on the rest of the info.
A little quote from a previous fan faire to tone down the "hardcore" a bit.
- "The possibility of a "hardcore" server similar to original EverQuest's difficulty (i.e. corpse runs)."
Server types are in since a long time already. SoE won't shoot themself in the foot by spending years and millions in a game only for a small subset of the MMO player base.
and then they scrapped the project and started from scratch.
yeah small subset... if you make games for the "big awesome majority market" for the umpteenth time, scattered across 123 similiar cookie cutter carebear casual titles, your playerbase might not end up being so majoritous after all.. maybe rather comatous?
guess SOE finally realized the alleged small subset is bigger than the fragmented mainstream market and it's smarter to try something different
"We are passionate about building a gameplay experience that surpasses your expectations.Beta testing is an integral part of making EverQuest Next a thrilling, hardcore MMORPG experience. As with any Beta, the more participation and feedback we receive from you, the players, the more polished and thrilling game we can produce."
Thoughts? Concerns? Happy dance?
VERY HAPPY DANCE!!!
I have a kid on the way and can't play hardcore anymore these days (now that I'm an older gent working 60 hrs/week). But I still love very challenging, hardcore games like Eve, Everquest 1, Vanguard, etc. If it's easy, I don't want it. LOVE that they're already identifying this game as hardcore.
"Hardcore" could mean anything. could mean a "serious, depth filled experience".
Remember when the devs said that SWToR was going to have epic combat?
Well, on one hand it can be looked at as "epic". It's fast, furious, a lot of visual presence. But the again some people thought that was a joke and challenged it being "epic".
I wouldn't read anything into this.

One statement creates three more questions.
EQN is worse than Fringe at this point, heh
Me too but without the level loss.
I remember binding at and going afk at the Ocean of Tears pier at level 16. When I got back I was level 12!
exactly the word I hoped to read describing EQN )
This will be the beast among MMOs, making EvE Nullsec look like a walk in the park!
Tomorrow is the day of revelation

EQ2 fan sites
turns out to be hardcore like camping ragefire hardcore, or sleeper's tomb hardcore (back when he wasn't supposed to be killed).
like Afterlife and Fires of Heaven hardcore.
then everyone will question why they wanted to go back to hardcore.

Hardcore could mean a number of things, like high difficulty, high time consumption or tough PvP rules (and probably some more things).
Until they get more specific it is best to not assume anything.
I agree with this. Their definition of "hardcore" could be very different from my own.

I'd find it odd that they would do this considering how quickly they removed it from SWG, weeks is all it took before the massive cries began.

Level loss if OK in my book.
I bet you learned from that misstake though.

I loved level drains in Moria (Rogue like)
get to level 20 for example ,HP gains per level was based on constitution.
lvl 20 ,con 8 ,hp lets say 300
a)max con,with potions or something.
b)let some mushroom or something level drain you to lvl 1
c)drink restore exp potion or level potion or something like that.
and voila new more powerfull character has born ,lvl 20,con 18.99 and hp 900.
Level drains can be cool also
Might work in many D&D based games,or not.
