Project Titan: Morhaime: "...unlikely to be a subscription based MMORPG."

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Blizzard's Mike Morhaime described the super-secret Project Titan as "unlikely to be a subscription based MMORPG" during today's Activision-Blizzard investor call.

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription based MMORPG."

"I also want to reiterate that there has not been an official announced or projected release date."

I agree, considering how terrible Blizzard's reputation has been with being unable to make profits off of groundbreaking mmorpg concepts - OH WAIT.

Seriously - folks want cash shops over a sub model that has a cosmetic shop at best?  Somehow, I'll bet the millions that play this next title won't be concerned with a F2P concept.  They will be too busy having fun.

If it's not sub-based then I wont be playing.  Looks like my mmo days are numbered now.   Time to dust off my single player games.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Don't mind him.  He's just trying to make a statement.

Funny how people can know in advance if they will play something or not based only on the payment model. Thats only one factor in fifty for me to consider if a game interests me or not

I think project "Titan" is a hoax. I think they just keep bringing it up occasionally to keep the rabid fanbase interested.

Not to sound condescending but do you even listen to what you type?  Your going to quit a genre because it no longer offers a paid subscription service for a genre which is chalk full of non-subscription services?

Random Forum Poster: I want an MMO that is different, original and fun.

Me: So you want something like EQN

Them: Nah dude, I want a Holy Trinity, Tab Target combat, Instanced Raiding, and Rigid classes.

    Me: Double Facepalm.

Add me to the list of people with Zero interest in cash shop f2p MMO #38327304.  Even if its by Blizzard not interested.

The reason most F2P MMO's are declared 'fail' by the playerbase is because the hardcore - who always lead the way and set the standard in the games, whether they're making youtube vids, running blogs with concrete number-crunching, or running uberguilds - do the math, realize that the company puts out a game where you end up paying more than you would've if it were just $15/month IF you want to play on the high level, and that puts people off when they realize that in order to be a badass and stand out (which lets not kid ourselves, it's what people want to do in these games), they have to open their wallets.

The old-school MMO player wants an MMO where your chance to stand out is a combination of enduring effort in-game AND a roll of the dice, not just "oh, that guy opened his wallet, that's why he has attention".

It's fine if you are just a casual/social player though and want that kind of gameplay.

The hardcore player of the organized guilds who triumph through their organization in games are done. The money is in catering to casuals, public pickup groups for 8-man dungeons, braindead mechanics that everyone can do (I mean you might as well make it braindead because even if it's complex, it just means the group has to watch the youtube video longer nowadays, right?), on and on.

TL;DR, stop hoping for old-school MMO's where you feel you achieve something and/or lucked out on a drop. Those days are gone. If you want to be badass in the future MMO, you should get a higher paying job.

Did not care then and do not care now.

Blizzard is just a different company now. Before they hit the top, they cared for both quality and profit. Today, they care only about profit - offering zero innovation.

Yeah... Titan is a hoax. Why would they actually bother developing a new game. Do you hear yourself?

Meh......not surprising and I think its pretty obvious we won't be seeing anything on this for many years to come. Even Blizzard has no idea how to top WOW.

Does not surprise me. At least they got that out of the way early on to avoid any arguments/discussions on what business model they will use near release. You never know, they might still go B2P.

I don't see what your objection is, like him I have no desire to play an MMO that isn't sub based or at the very least B2P in the style of GW2. That's my opinion and preference, and you nor anyone else can say I'm in the wrong for having it.

Some of us don't like to engage in psychological warfare with the games we should be playing for entertainment.

Also: obvious, I guess I'm "...unlikely" to play the game then, response.

b2p with optional subscription is the way to go. if they want to provide proper support(the kind of support we get now in WoW on weekdays) to all the players and keep the high quality of game, then f2p is not an option, b2p with optional sub is the perfect choice then.

I'm going on record to say that Titan won't even be an MMO.

Titan will be Blizzards first foray into the FPS pool. Borderlands clone, anyone?

Wait a second, this from a guy whose signature says:

"I want an mmorpg where pvp matters, my enemies are not my race or class, and community matters."

And you are saying the above quoted text in regards to a blizzard product? I'm sorry but i have to ask if you're a walking contradiction.  Because i dont know anybody who would realistically try to argue that WOW PVP mattered, community mattered, etc.

I also find it hilariously funny that you think blizzard is capable of "groundbreaking MMO concepts".  They're quite capable of ripping off other people's ground breaking concepts.  Much like they shit canned the existing version of Titan so they could wait until EQ:Next info comes out so they can proceed to rip that all off.

You are forgetting something though - Blizzard took those concepts and improved upon them.  Who cares if they aren't original.  How much is original in video games today anyways?  I want a good, fun product that I can spend hours and hours playing.  Blizzard has proven to delivery those products.  Love them  or hate them, I don't care - as long as they keep on making quality games, i'll keep on playing them.

I’ve tried a number of FTP titles, tried to like them—despite my cynicism of this business model.  To each his own, but for me I’ve concluded that I will never play another FTP game again.  I am happy to pay a sub for the right game.
