Star Citizen: Star Citizen Crosses the $15 Million Milestone

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

News is circulating that Chris Roberts' ambitious space sim Star Citizen has crossed the $15 million mark in crowd funding.  With that news, Cloud Imperium Games announced a new stretch goal. In the past five days Star Citizen has averaged raising $36,249/day. In the period between June 22 and July 22 this year, the project raised $4.3 million alone.

The new stretch goal that comes with this milestone is as follows:

Star Citizen fans have helped us reach the $15 million mark without any special promotion! Ten years ago, big publishers decided space games weren’t profitable… and you are proving them very, very wrong!

The $15 million unlock adds another flyable ship class to the game, the oft-discussed escort carrier. Every backer will also get a free digital 42-page Upgrade Handbook manual with their game which goes through the process of customizing and overclocking ship systems! We’re excited about putting this one together, since it goes right to the heart of what’s going to make Star Citizen unique.

The previously-announced $16 million stretch goals are:

  • Arena mode: Arena mode is a simulation within the game, although it is not the simulator itself. Players will have access to an actual training simulator in their hangars, which will be used for the dogfight alpha. The Arena is something bigger. It is a galaxy-wide event, where players come to specific locations, pay their entry fees, and jump into space battles to prove who is the best dogfighter of all. Think of it as a combination of a sports tournament and modern-day gaming contests. Each winner will receive credits for the victory, and the best of the best will meet in higher and higher rounds until a grand champion is crowned.

  • A laser pistol for every pledger before this point. Keep your ship safe from boarders with a pistol by your side.

With today’s achievement, we’re happy to unlock the $17 million rewards:

$17 million

  • Ship upgrade package for every pledger containing an engine modifier.

  • Additional flyable ship class: battlecruiser

Thank you all for your continued support. Tell your friends, Star Citizen is coming!

This blows my mind. Blind trust the gaming community has is something we are going to pay for later I am sure.

Sounds promising so far. This will generate more investors with the goal getting closer and closer.

Maybe they need to hype the game with making the game into an e-sport while they finalize the mmo part. Sounds like they have the e-sport mechanic.

How much total funding do they need from crowd funding?

The Space-Sim community has been so horribly starved over the past 5years it really isn't a surprised.

If they cannot pull off what they're aiming for everyone there will have a hard time finding a job elsewhere later. Just saying :P

I am hoping they are hard at work on the game itself... Not sure why they need so much money.

It's not really all that blind. Chris Roberts gave us Wing Commander 1, 2, 3, and 4. He gave us Starlancer and Freelancer. He gave us Privateer. We have every reason to trust him to make us a good game, so we back him.

The initial round of crowd funding was to shore up a gap in numbers. They were getting a certain amount from investors, it wasn't enough to make the game. The idea here is, if they can be *completely* crowd funded, they won't have to worry about the investors anymore. They can make their game decisions based on what they think the fans will like best rather than what they think will please the investors more.

Plus, more money means more resources means more product. The list of star systems we'll be visiting is already way higher than it was thanks to this effort.

Its a big leap from last year when the major publishers kept turning him down saying there was no money in space simulators and that he should make a cut down version for the consoles.

Chris Roberts stayed true to his dream PC game and the PC gaming community has supported him throughout.

The money not used by game development is being put into MOCAP and sound studios for the game and future games as well as expansions. This also means they can hire them out to other companies as well, mainly because they are made from state of the art equipment.

This has happened because companies like EA and Ubisoft have forgotten the PC gamer to concentrate on consoles and generic crap that they publish and release. Each and every year like COD and BF1-4. Kickstarter has opened up a whole new world for developers and gamers on the PC because it allows the gamers to directly talk to the developers and support games they really want to be made.

Elite Dangerous is also another space sim that is being made via a kickstarter campaign as well as other RPG's and RTS games.

Satellite Reign is being made as the spiritual successor to Syndicate Wars

Torment Tide of Numenera made by InXile who are also making Wasteland 2

Project Eternity made by Obsidian Entertainment

Shroud of the Avatar by Richard Garriot aka Lord British.

Shadowrun Returns by Hair Brained Schemes

A revolution is coming to the PC gaming scene and its being driven by the gamers and developers who make the games.

I hope it does well, not only for the game itself, but to further increase the legitimacy of crowdfunding as a viable option for games to get AAA, or near AAA budgets. This SHOULD be more friendly for developers since they can avoid the more stringent private investor or corporate models.

We will see, and this will definitely be a crowdfunded game for the history books...be it good or bad lol.
