You're kidding right?! This is a complaint that still is seen to this day. Someone's living under a rock apparently because I actually found this comic very relevant and funny. So HUE HUE HUE HUE to you!

To be fair, they walk slightly faster now.. and take less idiotic breaks. They just have a habit of vanishing prematurely... and also breaking, a lot.. until you want to kill the NPC.
In fact it's one of the reasons i rolled horde... oh killing that defias guy.... such good fun in the old days. When the alliance would troupe out and fight a little.... good times.

I'm reminded of an old woman in Aion who you had to escort to a hot spring. She walked slower than your character's walking speed (and I don't mean running speed) and if you got more than like... 5 or 6 meters away from her, she'd complain you were going to fast, vanish, and force you to start over. Oh, and of course it's in an area full of hostile mobs, hostile patrolling mobs, and the chance of enemy players showing up at any moment to gank you.
...and yet I still bothered to complete the quest.
In City oh Heroes, there were at least a couple escorts you could use Speed Boost on if you had a Kin, giving them Super Speed.
I very much like this mechanic, of being able to buff a NPC you are escorting. I think it lends to immersion and general enjoy-ability.
But yeah, I'd rather kill "10 rats".
