This all seems very baiting but very well.

No. Every MMO that comes out promises this and never succeeds.

Also, why did it end with World of Warcraft?

Something that brings 12 million people at its highest point is not an achievement?

How can we possibly know when nobody knows much of anything about this game?

I HOPE EQN ends up being something special, because NW is MMO sewage, TESO looks like it's going to be a joke, and there's nothing else worth mentioning on the horizon.

Wildstar?  Please.  This game looks like a tight WoW clone - might as well just play WoW.  EQN should and better be leaps and bounds more interesting than formulaic crap with outdated graphics.

Im going to go ahead and vote yes. I watched the 12 min long interview that mmorpg.com did with one of the devs at PAX. They got the right idea. There dead set on doing everything different. And that what people want. Im sick of themepark mmo's, and development companys trying to perfect that model and failing. This is the first time (that i know of) that a AAA game company has made a sandbox title. Its always been small indie dev teams with a limited budget and a niche player following. These guys have the resources to make a sandbox experience unlike anything we've ever seen. SOE has release more mmo titles then any other western company, they also argueably have the worst track record aswell. So idk, has SOE finnaly learned from all there mistakes? And realized that the industry doesnt need a ''better version of WoW", but something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

If your into sandbox games check out ArcheAge. That and EQN are all I'm looking forward too.

    Nope.

I do not think SOE is capable of taking the kind of risks they need to take to make this product unique, and I don't think they have the knack for polish to deliver on what they promise.

I don't think EQN is going to be anything like the majority on these boards hope it will be.

I think EQN is going to be very casual, F2P, very "jump in jump out" quick play session gaming. I also think they are going to have a huge focus on player created content and possibly even allow players to host their own game worlds with their own rule sets (on SOE's infrastructure of course.)

Even with all of that, it's going to be a very mass market targeted game, and thus it will probably be very successful for SOE but greatly disappointing for the classic EQ fans.

Like, EQN is going to be "the Everquest everyone can play!" but to classic EQ fans "this is Everquest? What?!"

I do not think it will usher in a new golden era to MMORPGs. August 2nd is so far away!

Maybe.  Let's wait and see.  Then I'll vote.

Your title and poll question don't jive: Yes, I hope it ushers in a new golden age. And no, I don't want it to be based on tired old primitive MMO concepts...something new is what we need.

I sincerely hope it is possible, I still miss the old MMO days where the attitude problems of the ADD children of this generation were not commonplace and before maturity was superseded by drama obsessed fools.

Whether this is possible is another thing altogether, I await with baited breath the reveal of EQN, but until then the only thing I can do is hope.

I voted no and would vote no again and again if I could =P

I've been playing games since Zork and lived through the rise of MMO's, eating them up one after the other until in the past few years, they've all begun leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I used to be able to play for hour after hour, forgetting to eat, barely making it to work, etc. But now I can pretty much jump into any of the latest games and in an hour I'm bored and craving a more fleshed out single player game, though those are severely lacking now too.

So, in my opinion, the gene pool for MMO's has grown far too stagnant and the 'golden age' is as broken down and forgotten as ancient Sumeria, thus EQN is just another dead weight that will make some money, but bring nothing new to the table. Smedley's just going to follow the formulas the investors give him. You can't think outside the box when it's been shut and locked.

I hope so. Don't know how yet, but it would be cool if it did.

I think with the launch of EQNEXT we will enter a new era where Developers and PLAYERS build games together instead of one or the other.

I voted NO because we are entering a new greater era where we all collaborate together to shape our fun!

The "Golden Era of Online Gaming" will never be seen again.  The whole attitude of people playing these days prevents this from ever occurring again.

The hype is getting out of control for this game. By the way i thought GW2 was the 'one' to bring a golden era to online gaming?

It did!  It lasted for a total of 2 weeks for me.

Considering what demographic makes up MMO customers are these days and the current online marketplace, there will never be another golden age of MMOs.  The "Golden Age" of MMOs which was up until about 2004 was a specific time and place in gaming (and the people playing the MMOs, before WoW brought in the "mass market") that will not and can not be revisited.  And that is true not only for a company like SOE that has a very questionable reputation in the industry and whose last several offerings have been weak, but frankly for any other company either.  No one wants to make games like the ones back then, and it is doubtful whether such game would be well received if released now.

All of them do this already. Check out forums of any games you play and look for the whiner posts. Those are the ones that the devs change (break) their games for =P

The interesting thing for me was that GW2 was amazing, up until I got to Orr, from then I was extremely bored by the amount of grinding, be it from dungeons, just in the general Cursed Shores areas, etc.

Everything was grinded for, be it the rarest weapons to the cutest non-relevant item, it just became a huge grind-fest.

    EDIT: Apologies for the double-post.

I know* EQN will be a great game and it will bring lots of new ideas and concepts that future developers will consider and build into their future projects.

Just as GW2 built on old concepts and brought in new concepts that have surely effected the industry.

What someone feels is the golden age of online RPGs is subjective.

For me, the golden age was before EQ, where only the most no-life, hardcore games existed like LoK, DF and UO.  Games so hardcore with death penalties that would burn your neck beard off and send you crying to your mommy.

I don't think we'll see those times again, but new is always fun.  I can't see all the new things EQN brings to the genre.  SOE has quite a track record of amazing games.  EQN will be no different.

Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL

We are seeing a bit of what dragged us into gaming so long ago. A few companies of talented people that are re-thinking the way games work and going back to some of the principles of old, while throwing out certain things that are outdated or don't work anymore.

interesting, at least to me, that these people are also the same ones that essentially started the genre garriot with ultima and now shroud (though im not sure thats really an mmo)

and the wildstar devs, who are former WoW devs, unless im mistaken (wow of course being the cause -blame?- of what the mmo genre has become)

Totally agree. The hype train needs to slow down. Has there even been a gameplay video released? I mean dam, slow the roll before the expectations are so high that no matter what they release will be deemed not good enough by this community.

GW2 was supposed to bring something different therefore a new era of gaming. But it just bought different, good, but different.

I'm sorry but Guild Wars 2 is not THE online game that everyone is talking about even people who doesn't play online games.

EverQuest was that game once... I found some old newspaper articles were they called it ''EverCrack'' :D

What rock were you living under?  GW2 TOTALLY was talked about as THE MMO.  They broke record sales, everyone talking bout the game, rave reviews, ect ect.

EQN will receive the exact same fate as GW2 being a massively overhyped game that will fail to deliver a number of things.  Will it be a good MMO?  I'm sure it will be.  Will it have it's flaws?  Most certainly.  Will it under perform or promised features that are hyped fail to deliver?  That's a guarantee.

And the EVerCrack was a derogatory term meaning addiction in an unhealthy way, like babies dying due to neglect or relationships being destroyed.... not something I would boast about a game.  Some people need some MMO rehabs or something how they let it get out of hand.  That's the reputation of Everquest and people sterotyped MMO gamers as living in their mom's basement, jobless, unsuccessful in life, beat off to porn every night, ect ect certainly not a healthy image.... at all.  Not something I'd be trumping around.

I voted no because time n time again have MMOs failed to deliver all their promises, more so when you have big name companies involved.  Feature wise I expect Pathfinder Online being more sandboxy and deliver their features, EQN I expect being more polished and publicized.

GW2 was talked about before release as possibly breaking the mold of the Holy Trinity of Tank/ Healer/ DPS with a new system. This turned out in the end to be zerg style game play with everyone doing their own thing. Instead of tanks you had interruptions, active dodging, cancellation of debuffs, push backs....temporary blocks....self heals...everyone takes damage and backs off, some kiting.  It was interesting in concept, but felt strange in execution. Almost like they tried to hard to make it happen and broke other things in the attempt.

Did GW2 do some things right? Yes, I think part of the dynamic branching quest worked. This was first seen in Rift for me and expanded a little with GW2.

As far as Evercrack........what this was eluding to was the ability of a single game to be so good that you want to play it all the time and choose it over other games since there was always something interesting to work on. Always a quest around the next corner....a never ending quest.  It truly lived up to that name in both good ways and bad. Sure there were reports of gamers taking it to far, but the same could be said for WoW.

Point I am making here is that There have been very few games to keep me gaming to the point where I lost track of time and almost 2/3 of a day off was gobbled up while I was immersed in the world. That still works for me to this day. I took about 3 years break and just downloaded and tried the Free to Play with my old Druid. Since I had quit there were alot more AA's added and tons of new content and gear and areas to explore. I quickly found myself deep into new territory mentally mapping and exploring. Trying my luck at kiting several new creatures (died once). Re-learning some of what made my character unique and a bad mofo back in the day.

If EQ Next can do anything remotely like that for an extended period of years, they will eclipse WoW and other current games that are in it's category.

    Two other points.

Pathfinder Online is using very outdated graphics in the Beta working prototype video I saw. Looked like a game from EQ times 1998 with a few touch ups.

Also the negative connotation with online gamers has changed over the years. Sure there are still cave dwelling,  jobless pizza pocket easting,  porta-potty going, energy drink iv-ing, zombie eyed, stinky, fat bags out there that make a bad name for the rest of us. But there are also an overwhelming amount of people that have now grown up with games as a hobby and find a few hours here and there to invest in a deep immersive gaming world and escape for a bit.

This is ridiculous, no normal person could answer this question, with any rational basis for their answer.  They do not know the grand new scheme that SoE says they have, and if it is real or not.

So where is the third option?
