I'm on board for as many customizations as possible. It's the one aspect of an MMO that a player is guaranteed to have control of, even in the most linear of theme park games.

Good thing that this isn't EQ1. It's a parallel universe and SoE is free to do as they choose. If they narrowly confine a race then that race shouldn't be a player character race, or rather all playable races should be highly configurable. Players should be free to role play as they will, especially in a game that seems to be touting such open "sandbox-style" features.
Lore is confirmed for this sandbox game, look at the soe live updates. Lore will impact their appearance. Especially in EQ. Nice try but you aren't going to be able to customize your character beyond what that race is capable of. 100% sure that includes fat high elves. You will be able to customize, but I doubt you will be able to make halflings tall, etc.

But now that the technology is there, I can see them letting you make a puggy high elf, or a toned up halfing. Things like that. There will be some wiggle room for every race.

I expect a certain bit of over-the-top when there's high-fantasy involved. This isn't 14th century Europe. This is Norrath, a fantasy land where gods are real, undead walk the fields at night and dragons live in the deepest dungeons and highest mountains.
In this kind of setting, I expect to see some crazy looking armor, over-the-top weapons and high-octane action. You got to admit, it's a lot less boring to look at.

To the OP, I agree that it is fun to make toons that resemble more real life than fantasy. I always like short slightly out of shape dwarfs myself. Too many mmo's only allow for the buff dwarf. Im sorry, but if I drank that much beer I doubt I could maintain a six pack!

I too like to make big, fat and ugly male heroes. You should see my SWTOR toons However, when it comes to female toons, I like them voluptuous - tiny waist and big bonzongas. Different strokes for different folks. The only thing that I would be upset at is if EQN does not allow you to make either type (ugly and voluptuous).

A good character creation interface is more or less a must in a modern MMO. I hope they allow you to make all kinds of differently looking characters of the races.
But I frankly care more about clothes and gear. EQ2s huge problem is that most of the clothes and armors are made out of a few skins and then recolored, that is just lazy and cheap. There is like 2 robe skins that are both ugly for mages. A dye system and maybe a way to mix the look like in Biowares Neverwinter nights (each armor-part were made out of a few different parts you could mix together).
Looks is getting more and more important in MMOs as the graphics improves, a character should look pretty unique and you should be able to recognize your friends by looks alone. In fact I would like if you only could see the names of friends(on your friend list), guildies and people your are grouped with automatically instead of everyones name hovering above them.

It is as cartoony as you can get. It is pretty much on par with WoW. At no point was Everquest ever realistic in any iteration. Everquest 2 tried for realism, but ended up looking like play-doh abortions until they fixed them with SOGA.
Also the large beefy armour that the Kerra / Vah Shir is wearing is pretty much a carbon copy of the Skyshrine Armour that was in EQ2 over a year ago. So people should quit whinging about that too, or stop looking back at EQ with rose tinted glasses and see it for what it really was.
