How do PS3/4 social systems work?

So I'm wondering how chat and emotions work for the console version.  I know that the PS4 version isn't available, and that's fine.  But as for the PS3, how is this being worked around?  Do you have to select people and type in words with ridiculous on screen keyboards?  Do you need to scroll through a long list of emotes?  I think I may want to get this game for the PS4 but I'm unsure about certain mechanics.

There is a menu item you can get to that just lists all the emotes, and you can get to that via using the gamepad. The list is long, but not terribly so - long enough that I wouldn't want to do it every time I wanted to do some common emotes though.

Fortunately, you can hotkey various emotes (not sure how to do this with just the keypad, but I'm sure there's a way if I could play around with it some more) - this is useful for escort missions and the like, and with the 9 different hot bars, you could dedicate one hot bar just to commonly used emotes so they would be just a chord combination away.

You can use the gamepad / controller to the emote icon on the menu . But I would invest in a keyboard . You can buy a USB corded one for 10$ or a wireless for 50 or less . You just plug it in the USB slot next to the slot you use to charge the controller . When you use a keyboard you type /say to talk to someone close to you . /yell to talk in a large area your in /shout to talk to everyone in the zone your in /tell (Players first and last name ) to have a PM with that person ( hint press ALT+R to talk to the person who messaged you without having to type there name .  for emotes its simple / then the emote so to laugh /laugh to cry /cry .
