Dark and creepy worlds

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

I have had it with all those mmos that have children bedtime fantasy stories... The only exceptions are Conan and TSW and the dark side of swtor.

Even in the real world all problems involve around power and sex, (even in movies)  and from that 2nd ingredient mmos stay far far away, and exactly that turns the world created in themeparks that feel to childish. No i am not talking about actuall romantics or porn xxx scenes. I am more talking about sexually inclined conversations, i am talking about romance and lust as base for the games background.

Now where is that dark and creepy fantasy game that gives me the shivers, turns a smile on my face, and gets me really interested in the characters. The game where undead are really scary and a vampire queen makes your blood cook with her hissing voice. Where. Where is that game that throws us back to those darkages instead of halfway trough the steampunk era. Where everyone plots dark things, where i can choose to be good or evil, plotting things or just enjoying the company of some lucious ladies. Catch lycanthropie or turn intoo a vampire. Being cast out by NPC society for being evil, or being cheered on for saving the town.

anyway, you got my feeling, i dont want a childrens themepark, but i dont mind running around in the most awesome haunted house ever.

I dont see how EvE is related to the darkages and fantasy...

  • MMOs are the Star Trek novels of the gaming world.

The writing is like you know third tier at best.  If you are expecting The Chronicles of Amber or the Black Company or a Brandon Sanderson novel out of MMOs you will be disappointed.

I loved the story of Bungie's Myth series (heavily influenced by the Black Company by Glen Cook) but I absolutely never expect an MMO to pull if off.  Maybe they attempt the same atmosphere, but you must realize the volume alone that an MMO requires will cause a huge hit to the quality of the story and thus they become  the mass franchise produced pulp fiction equivalent which make use of the third tier writers.

Why do you think the Dune books that Frank Herbert's son put out were rather lackluster?  Because Kevin J Anderson is a third tier writer who writes that kind of stuff.  And so it is for MMOs.  Sorry wish it weren't the case but it is.

lol, yeah I was thinking the exact same thing a few days ago.

I want characters that are highly creepy, scary, disturbing.

Unfortunatley creepy, scary and disturbing will be ruined by other players.

World of Darkness, not much known about it yet except that it will be based on the table top game.

I sometimes make spelling and grammar errors but I don't pretend it's because I'm using a phone

Bah.  You guys scare easily. :)

No matter how "creepy" a game tries to be, I just cannot be scared by something that I see on a screen.   Of course, I don't really find horror movies to be scary so it might be a personal preference of aestetics.

Turn off the lights, put headphones on and play Amnesia: Dark Descent and come back and say that.

Far more than monster designs and grotesque environments, I find scary to be about atmosphere.  In fact, I don't think a game even has to be considered "mature" to be unsettling.  The Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time (arguably the ultimate single-player theme park) combines music, sound effects, stillness, open and closed spaces and sightlines, monsters falling from the ceiling, and so on to create what I consider to be the most disquieting location I've experienced in a game, especially when the lights are off in the dark of night.  Some would argue the Bottom of the Well and Shadow Temple from the same game do it even better.  TSW represents the horror genre reasonably well for an MMO, but I don't believe it succeeds in really creating that "uncomfortable in your seat" feeling.

As far as games that present characters with more mature motivations and offer alternatives to the "perform heroic deed, get rewarded by thankful soldiers/townsfolk" paradigm, I suspect that the cons are usually seen as outweighing the pros.  In games where it might be appropriate, at the very least you're still fighting against the "if they spend X including that, they can't spend it on all these better things" mentality.

Credit where credit is due though.  TOR does have personal story episodes here or there that allow the player to be callous, cruel, vengeful, greedy, etc. to the disdain or approval of certain characters.  It's not necessarily well-integrated into the larger game, but there was at least some effort put in.  Even on the Republic side, my gunslinger and trooper gunned down a couple people who crossed them on a bad day.  It wasn't just "I'm going to kill you because I'm EVIL!11", but much closer to a genuine, "I'll worry about the consequences later, this is what you get for ----ing with me."  I love that, and would love to see more of it.

you'll have to wait until World of Darkness.

Until then, The Secret World is an excellent choice.

Also Age of Conan has some really scary shit going on in some places.

Funcom has a good feeling for dark and gritty places

btw I hope to see a Castlevania MMO sometime in the future

lmao - some day, I might buy that game.  I doubt I'll play it, though; too much of a little sissy boy.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have to turn on every light on the block.

Play FFXI. The sense of danger and atmosphere in that game is heads and tails above any other.

Yes Funcom has some great stuff going in that department, as much as they lack in other departments, this is something they really nailed... Dont make a childrens game, MMOs are not meant for children to play.

i dont want real life in my mmos. I single player RPG based on real life would make sense to me because it means it will be massive (even bigger than Skyrim) but an mmo? no ty. But thats just me. As for AoC and TSW they are OK to me because AoC is based on Conan, and TSW in Lovecraft and i like both. But thats just me.

I like the idea of the mature vampiric theme of World of Darkness but its because its a dark, bloody,  vampiric theme, and not a real life crap. But thats just me, again.

This is the truth right here, no matter how amazing the atmosphere is, no matter how much tension the game builds and how much it may want you to jump at that shadow and get a tingle down the spine because of that sound you heard coming from around the corner....

L33T SEPHIROTHXXX bunny hopping down the coridor screaming OMG NOOB L2P LOL, is probably going to dillute the experience a bit.

The horror genre is not one meant to be shared with crowds.  In particular crowds of gamers...in particular..crowds of mmo gamers.  We're bad people.

World of Darness is not a dark ages game, i think its more in line with TSW, which offcourse makes it a game i need to try, but not my favorite setting.

Something like Ravenloft? Hell even some of the forgotten realms settings are creepy.

Personally am still waiting for wheel of time to get an online stint, numerous creepy/scary places in that series :-

    The blight

    All of the cities

    Mashrapur

The waygates (haunted by Machin Shin -the wind of death).

    Then there's the creatures :-

    Myrrdraal (eyeless elite humanoids)

Trollocs (beastmen that love the taste of human flesh)

Draghkar (cross between a succubus and a siren only far uglier)

Gholam (Almost unkillable humanoids with talents much like Tooms from the x -files)

Darkhouds (these mutts have acid saliva and leave molten tracks in stone).

Unfortunately Red Studios has been sitting on the intellectual rights for the past 5 years, so could be a while yet :(

I'm playing Neverwinter.  It's pretty dark but still very fantasy.  I don't think creepy-as-hell has been made for the mmo genre.  Like crap jumping out at you from behind a corner you didn't expect and it looks scary.  I don't follow the spooky game crowd so I don't what the scariest game is.  I remember my friends throwing the name Resident Evil around.  Spoze if someone made an mmo like that it'd be worth checking?
