[Column] Guild Wars 2: The Last Stand at Southsun

ArenaNet recently deployed the latest chapter in the Guild Wars 2 Living Story, The Last Stand at Southsun. We take a look at it today and what team players and soloists can expect. Check it out and then tell us about your experiences in the comments.

The Last Stand at Southsun is now available in Guild Wars 2ArenaNet cooked up this little event to expand on the Secrets of Southsun, which brought players back the deadly island of Southsun Cove.  It’s always interesting to see how each Stage in the Living story is executed.  Each addition to the game since launch has been done by several different development teams.  I’m starting to see patterns, and each team seems to have a certain style with how to present content to the players.  It’s kind of neat really.  This makes each addition unique, and changes up how players will tackle the new challenges.

I DID NOT LIKE THIS! IMO this should not be indicative of what future content should look like. Poorly written a d the solo instance had a very high level of annoyance. I did not level my character to 80 to be forces to use idiotic gun to manipulate mines. It was like a mini game, not story. Come on Anet you can do better.

I really can't believe I'm reading a gushing review about the group dungeon for the last stand. The solo dungeon was acceptable (I guess), but the group dungeon was a major disappointment. Yes, I died several times, and yes I finally had to have my guild help me because they actually followed directions instead of just smashing the golem even when it's purple shield was up (my first two groups... let's just say they really don't know the meaning of strategy or listening when someone knows what the heck is supposed to be done to complete something successfully).

The problem is that the group instance wasn't fun at all, and was sort of a letdown. The Secrets of Southsun in general has been a disappointment to me. Unlike Flame and Frost, the events in Southsun don't feel like a story to me. Sure there are tidbits of things from NPCs, bit it's minimal. Southsun to me was just following a zerg to one settler event to the next (and before anyone asks, yes, I have completed all of the achievements).

Not only that, but it seems as if ANet is seeing what they can get away with by putting the Southsun Supply Crate in the Gem Store. For those that don't know this is an RNG item, and is basically the Korean MMO version of what you'd call a gachapon. While you are able to get this crate ingame the problem is that you only have a 1% to get the crate and everything in the crate is mostly junk. What people are trying to get is the currency for the weapon skin, and guess what rate it is set at? Also 1%.

I would not have a problem with the RNG if either the crates weren't so hard to obtain or the currency wasn't so hard to obtain. But to put both at 1% is going a little bit over extreme. But back to the Gem Shop. I really hope other people are catching this because many MMOs have done this in the past. They add an item like the Southsun Supply Crate into their game and wait to see what plays say/do. Then they wait a few months and add something similar. They do this slowly but pretty soon what happens is that it becomes the norm and now the game's cash shop will forever be filled with gachapon-like bundles. And eventually there may not be a way to gain these same items within the game.

It's just very worrying to me and I hope other players make their voice heard by ANet, like I have already done, so ANet knows that this is not something the player base will accept.

This reminds me of the constant rage in WOTLK when the devs tried doing somthing to spice up the game, people just love doing the same thing over and over.

Considering this was the general populations view in map chat on my server, I have to agree with Tekaelon. ANet took a step back with this installment of their living-story instead of a step forward.

I enjoyed this dungeon; the single player dungeon less-so, but I see what they tried to do. It's not even the final event to the southsun story, so I would say that with all the changes they have made thus far, i'm pretty happy. Fun fight, and the mechanic had me holding my breath the first couple of times. Plus now i've got creepy back equipment :P

    ^^ Exactly this.

There are several multi-page threads on just how displeased people are with the design and overall execution of Southsun.  I am shocked that one of the staff writers would go on and on about  1) How amazing it is and  2) Pretty much calling people noobs who were having difficulties.

I am absolutely appalled that the majority of rewards for Southsun were gated behind terrible RNG odds.  There was a single gate if you bought the crate through the Cash Shop and a double gate to try for a rare drop off a mob THEN experienced the rare chance for the ticket.  The RNG issue is currently in the Top 3 that the community is on fire about.  It seems that NCSoft and Nexxon have their claws firmly into ANet's flesh when it comes to monetization.

I don't think I'd be quite as effusive in praise for this effort.  I can't speak to the group dungeon, but the solo dungeon is poorly conceived.  The worst part is putting boss hints in the chat log (seriously, it's an action based game - why wouldn't the tell be visual?) but the whole concept is just odd.

A single player dungeon who's instance spawnpoint is on through and on top of a mob spawn and event path capable of instagibbing players as they port in and out.  Patchy audio and buggy mechanics with very little sense of drama or completion.  I actually have no idea how I came to be chasing down Canach, but he's pretty limp as a villain.

The Southsun arc has IMO been pretty uninspired on its own merits though.  It has reminded me of nothing more than Star Wars Episode 1.  I remember when it released every critic was making great fun of how they went from a galaxy spanning epic threat to what amounted to a trade dispute and a political "drama".

There are massive, primordial dragon forces tearing Tyria apart at the seams, all existence is threatened and all heroes are called, but instead of facing that threat down we're all running around on an island investigating a property dispute.

Took me 20 minutes to get all of the 'cave' achievements. Tried WvW, but it's still a joke. Never ran the game since
