M i the only one bothered by this?

As online gaming becomes ever more popular,  many developers and publishers are beginning to test and introduce mass social services and interactions within their game, and in some instances they even force you to take part in it if you want to fully enjoy the game´s features or even take part in it at all.

This is also happening with home consoles, handhelds and offline games as well..

I know that right now the problem is mostly a minor nuisance and that most of the popular games that have these features more or less allow you to do without them, but  for how long?

I do not know about you, but i and i know that many others do play games to escape from reality and our mundane crap, not to get even more involved with it within the few hours we have for ourselves.

Of course this issue does not only affect gaming, but i certainly do not want for it to take roots into it.

Nope I hate it.  And any of my friends that have it become ignored.  I hate seeing those popups.  Facebook is about friends (IMO, course I don't "friend" just anyone).

As long as its optional for people who don't want it and people like me who'd be interested, since most of my facebook friends are gamers, I don't see the harm.

What I dislike is when you get a benefit for having a facebook account and doing some action on it that you can not get in any other way.  Even when this is something cosmetic like a special costume helmet or something it rubs me the wrong way.  There should always be an alternate means of getting something than facebook.

This is exactly what i mean.

As this social media integration becomes more widespread, we will be seeing ton of content, cosmetic items and all kinds of stuff that have to be "Unlocked" by having X amount of friends, or being signed on x amount of sites/programs and what not.

So long as it is optionla it is more or less harmless,  but there already are a few games that "force" you to "socialize" in order to enjoy  the whole thing, and it´s only going to grow from here.

I've seen social media integration that allows you to post pics and status to facebook but nothing that forced you to use facebook to progress.

Are we referring to ad campaigns where liking a FB page gets you a neat item in game? Is that the complaint?

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

They have to pay for those F2P games somehow, and since everyone seems to want their games for "free" your going to get cash shops, currency exchange tactics, ad partners and who knows what else next embedded directly into your game.

So I guess everyone is getting exactly what they asked for.

I still think its a cancer that keeps getting worse with every new "trick" to try and make revenue with F2P.  And the games continue to be less and less immersive and more and more annoying.

I just wish I didn't have a hobby that was shared with so many cheap bastards.

I would like more details as well. From what I've seen, MMO developers are very late to the social networking side of things. I find it hard to believe that they've embraced social networking in any great numbers.

I do think they should take some ideas from Facebook and the like, but I don't know that MMOs would benefit from integration with those services. Why would anyone want to see automated tweets about raid bosses going down or houses being built?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Social media users are the "playerbase" MMO's have been chasing for two or three years now. It does not matter if they are not gamers, they are a large group in the right age bracket who are online, so they are being chased.

The integration with social media sites and the dumbing down of game controls, UI's and gameplay is a result of this attempt to appeal to social media types.

I wouldn't call it late... I didn't see many games get integrated with social medias. Some did create their own social media (bioWare Social Network) but I rarely see anything except those facebook games and other paid ads. However, Facebook did get much more aggressive in increasing their partners exposure over time.

I never nor plan to attach any of my games to my Facebook account... And I don't want anyone spamming my news feed with 'Heavy Inferno Nightmare' spam.

I really dislike having those features.  Most of my real life friends aren't gamers and I prefer to keep some things private.  I haven't had to use it yet but I guess if I had to I'd probably just make another facebook account for gaming purposes.

Are you speaking of games trying to be farmville and spam your facebook account or you speaking of games having facbook-like social webs within the game?

As long as it stays just updates news or "fun" things for ppl to do I don't care. When they start handing out items or bonuses you can only get through social media I get very annoyed.

The hell with that.  I try to hide my online gaming from society, not celebrate it.  Tell me, does any gamer really want chicks, employers and friends to know how much you like elves, orcs and pwning?  Do you really want them to know how proud you are of the raid loot you spent ten hours wanting to acquire?  They called Everquest "Evercrack" for a reason.

Sharing your passion for MMOs on social networks is like sharing your porn addiction, or gambling addiction, or crack habit, or drinking binges on social networks.  It gives people a reason to avoid you.  It also brings people into your life that you don't want there.

if you have a job, friends , and a life I do not think commenting on a forum about mmo's with whatever electronics device you stole is worth mentioning.

I have a fake Facebook account made up just for those annoying games that give bonuses if you like them or whatever. Facebook has no business in any mmorpg.

  • SulaaSulaa Member UncommonPosts: 1,329

    I hate it as well.

Don't wanna use facebook or any other social sites with my mmorpg or any other game for that matter.  Don't want others to know my real name if I don't tell them directly myself, and don't wanna to put fake facebook either and generally I just don't want social crap in my gaming and especially in mmoprg.  FU

Wow that sucks you have to hide who you are. I don't use social media because I hate it but everyone I know, knows I play games. I don't drown people in my hobby but all my friends and co workers know I game and all my wifes friends know it too.

To me it's no different than knowing one of my friends plays soccer, football or likes to play pool in his spare time. I guess if you are at the point you're out of control addicted it might seem like drinking, drugs or other personality issues people try and hide.

I kind of hate it as well. And I do use facebook.

Like you, I actually "friend" my actual friends. And I have a good many friends.

Not thousands as I don't understand how anybody can be good and true friends to giant amounts of people (are there that many hours in the day?) but a good many so that facebook helps us all keep in touch on a reasonably regular basis.

However, whenever I see a facebook tie -in with a game or something along the lines of  "like us on facebook and get a chance for beta, etc. etc. ) I ignore it.

It's as if game companies (and essentially, many corporations - which I don't feel are inherently evil) think that they have another avenue for my attention so they are going to take advantage of it.

but they don't. Because they are not my friend.

so they can go out and make good products and get my attention that way.

Personally I think MMORPGs severely missed the opportunity.

One of my favorite parts of MMORPGs is playing with friends.  Facebook connection to help me join a server populated by real friends is like the bare minimum most obvious functionality all MMORPGs should offer.

I dislike the immense negative effect social media has had on society, but I dont give a fuck if people know I play MMOs.  Any 'chick' worth knowing is either a gamer herself, or understands that everyone has their own hobbies.
