Rip-off graphics from 2003

Am I the only one who realizes that WoW has one of the worst graphics engine and art design of any half popular mmo out? We give WoW a break because, hell their engine is going on 10 years old, but then I look at a game like FFXI that is even older and was created for PS2! Look at water in one and then the water in the other and you tell me what you see. And then there's Wildstar..... Same crappy graphics and art design. Makes sense they both originated from the great house of Blizzard. If I wanted to play a saturday morning cartoon I would play Ragnarok 2, who's art design is truly art. I think games like Wildstar give us such crappy art because they know it doesnt  tax their engine like the graphics of Archage or FFXIV. And my lord have you seen Black Desert?! Square Enix knew that their 5 star graphics of FFXIV were too hard on their engine, especially with hundreds of potential player in one area. So they toned them down, got a new engine and guess what? They still are one of the very best looking games out there. I have actual game play footage as my screen saver cause they look so damn clean. And their art design is second to none.

If you dont spend major time and money on your art and graphics then it leaves more time and resources for other things. But It doesnt matter if you are soloing, team play, questing, pvping, raiding, crafting or farming. Youre always looking at the graphics and art design. It seems only asian developers realize this.

If I'm going to spend the next 5 years looking at a game shouldnt I enjoy what I'm looking at every moment and have wonder? I mean after every expansion of WoW and monthly fees Ive given them north of 600 bucks. For crappy graphics.

No thanks Wildstar.

Personally I actually quite like the art style of wildstar, just because they haven't gone for a realistic art style doesn't mean it doesn't look nice. Wildstars graphics are light years away in quality than WoWs and I have to disagree about ragnarok 2 graphics, I don't think they look that great if I'm honest. The advantage with stylised graphics are that they don't tend to age as badly as the realistic approach. I say each to there own though, but i feel wildstar looks fine and as long as the game play is up to standard then I think it may have a bright future. Time will tell.

I see Wildstar as a wacky fun not serious cartoon that is a game .

Nothing wrong with that but I doubt I will be playing this game for the next 10 years lol .

I think the graphics are good looking. Just not realistic, but they weren't going for the realistic feel. Which is fine, I think plenty of games that have different graphic styles look great, The Windwaker looked great, even maplestory for how cutesy it is looks good.

I didn't like the art at first either, but it definitely grew on me.  The art director of WildStar also worked at Blizzard on WoW.

Yeah, I like the stylized look. They've established an art direction, and they're owning it quite well. But then again, so long as the animations are not horrid, I'm usually happy with whatever. Most of the animations I've seen look pretty great.

Not to dog on your examples either. They too look pretty great. But if everything attempted to emulate super realism...things would be pretty boring, wouldn't they?

I suppose I'm just here to consume the mass amounts of entertainment thrown my way, rather than complain about it.

I like it and I loved games like Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank which were similar in its comedic style with fun action gameplay.

You already pointed out a whole bunch of games going the route of realistic graphics. I think diversity is good and don't want all games to look the same or so similar i could not tell what game it was a screen of. When I see screenshots of this game I immediately know what game it is. What I have seen so far looks very clean and the sense of humor matches the art style very well.

The graphics are actually quite well done. Oh, and it's the aesthetics you're complaining about, not the graphics. Please learn to differentiate the two before going off on a tangent.

'Realistic' graphics / aesthetics are nice, but they become outdated very, very quickly. Furthermore they have much higher system requirements, which makes the game less accessible to the average user. Contrary to what you may think, most PC users have low to mid-range system specs.

Stylized aesthetics are more accessible, and look good for a much longer period of time. WoW's aesthetic has held up extremely well, despite the fact that many models & objects have a very low polygon count compared to today's MMOs.

I happen to love Wildstar's aesthetic. It looks like something Pixar or Dreamworks would come up with, yet with Carbine's own unique take on it.

To each their own, but to insinuate that the folks over at Carbine haven't put much effort toward the graphics, aesthetic,  & art design is just ignorant at best. It's very obvious they've spent a lot of time, money, effort, and care into the aesthetic of the game.

It's a sad day indeed when a family is too afraid of reprisals to publicly thank somebody for saving their lives.

I'm not into cartoonic type of games and that's why I never could get into WOW...

By watching Wildstar videos, they seems to be very humorous and not serious which actually is fun and matches their art style.  To me, even though their graphics are cartoonic but more of a Torchlight look than WOW, just my personal feel.

I love the way this game looks.

The lack of investment in graphics is probably part of WoWs success. They focused on working to make a good game and didn't waste budget on novelties.

Wildstar is going for more action, and from what I remember, platforming, even with modern technology, it ramps up the resource and programming strain, the real attraction is their gameplay, if they do that right, than it's a success.

Not your style? they make other MMOs, they also make MMOs for kids and people who appreciate simplicity, that's not a fault.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, if they get angry, they'll be a mile away... and barefoot.

This is not really about art style, they are simply put really cheap graphics. You can have a cartoony art style but do a really good job with it,example as mentioned by other people PIXAR.Now of course i don't expect Pixar quality but i definitely expect a better effort than what Wildstar's team is giving us.

As mentioned >>Blizzard, they really do utilize old engines and cheap graphics in all their games.

I can cut some slack and not expect HD or even 720p if it is a new dev like Wildstar's team but Blizzard??No excuse .

Cuting Wildstar some slack does not mean i accept the bottom of the barrel graphics, like i said they SHOULD have put a BETTER effort into that art style.

Point is,it has NOTHING to do with direction or art style, has everything to do with decent quality and effort.

To the statement "doesn't mean it doesn't look nice" well of course not but in case of Wildstar it DOES mean exactly that.

This is not to confuse the gaming part either, they are doing some really good things in Wildstar, but they are taking so many positives and ruining it all with no effort in the graphics department.Reason is simple, they want a game that can run for pennies in free to play mode.

I would say my gut tells me ,they never expected this kind of interest in their game,so they went the cheaper route.I bet if hind sight was in their favor they would do a better job with graphics, even with the same art style.

who cares..i mean with graphics in such games as neverwinter..wildstar is top notch...people count on graphics to much and not the game play or content..graphics are only a part of the entire game..wildstar is going to rock and hit the mmo world  with a huge hit .

I love how the op is complaining about the art style. Yet they went for the cartoony art style due to it being popular. It is set so it can still look good years from now. A lot of mmorpg fans like the style and it doesn't affect how the game actually plays. You all judge before actually getting into a game or reviewing it -.-

Gamer for life, don't come to me complaining about grinding, getting pwnt or shit. I don't care

    Amateur art critic, unpaid.

Easiest job in the universe, but not much of a career.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Hah .. cheap graphics in WildStar?

I recommend you to visit eye specialist, he may help you. If he says everything is alright, just go to the madhouse, plenty of room for people like you there :) Meanwhile you are there, I will be enjoying WildStar's awesome graphics.

    Subjective OP, very subjective.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You don't like the graphics style, okay. I do.

  • SinakuSinaku Austin, TXPosts: 481Member Uncommon

There is a difference between art style and graphic quality. Ascetics and graphics aren't the same thing. I personally don't like cartoon style (WoW, Ratchet and Clank, and most cell shading games) but really this game looks nice and I will definitely give credit where credit is due.

Graphic quality is on par with all new age MMOs and I think you may just be upset at the art style and letting that get in the way of seeing how nice the game actually looks. As someone stated in a previous reply, this game is light years ahead of WoW graphically.

  • Methos12Methos12 Maladis 46Posts: 1,234Member Uncommon
What OP doesn't like is game's art STYLE. It looks quite proficiently made in the graphics department when you look at texture and model quality.
