Well it says it quite well in the title. "Prepare to Die" Not much else is needed to be stated.

    Use DSfix.

Prepare to die. Alot. Alot of times that aren't your fault. The game rewards you for learning, but there also mechanics in it just to kill you for no good reason.

That said, wonderful game. Story is awesome if you look for it, world is interesting. Use the Wiki often, or you could be stuck in places for days. :P

  • I heard the PC port of the game is terrible, so I hope you bought it for a console.

PC Port with DSFix & Mods is the best version available.

I have it for the PS3, I would have gotten the PC port also but that didn't turn out well.

That said, the base game is magnificent.  It's merciless, but not as disemboweling type of merciless that Demon's Souls was.  The difficulty is famed within today's gaming.  The learning curve is high and the room for error is very slim at best.  Mistakes are costly.  But the game rewards players that learn the gameplay, refine their character's build and equipment, and persistency.  A developed character is a great feat.  Not so much as a timesink, but someone had to do alot of the right things to get that far.  If you want a sense of accomplishment from a bonafidely difficult game, DS is it.

Just remember, when you start this game brand new, you're going to get messed up hard.  But keep at it, learn from your mistakes.

Character movement and combat is outstanding.  Different weapon types bring greatly different styles of play.  There's a great variety of enemies and bosses are breathtaking.

There's things done with this game I feel alot more RPG devs could take a que from.  I think the world could be larger, more open, but for the limitations of the consoles, they did a great job and the worlds feel bigger than Demon's Souls.

As mentioned before, they screwed up the PC port because it wasn't even originally considered and the devs had poor experience with PCs (kind of funny, since games are developed on a computer).  Work is underway on a sequel, and I do hope the PC version takes full advantage of what the platform can really do.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Dark Souls II will have a native PC version, so claims From Software. They said they did half-ass DS1.

That said, with DSFix & mods available on DarkSoulsnexus, it can be one of the most beautiful games in a -long- time.

I love this game but as mentioned above you need the mouse fix to make it playable. I will say this however, sometimes I want to find who ever designed it and kick the living shit out of them. Prepare to die! They got that right!

Works great on PC with DSfix & DSMfix, looks great and works just beautifully!

Prepare to die, alot! And most importantly, LEARN from those deaths, don't go on a teenage anger-tantrum. LEARN!

protip: Learn your weapon(s), their movesets, positives, negatives and master it :) (i like my long swords/straight swords)

    Best game in years!

It's a great game, but a bit too vague with important info for its own good at times. There are some things you should really know as a new player:

Don't hit NPCs. They'll attack you and you won't be able to calm them down by yourself. Later on, there's a guy who can make them peaceful again for a price. If you kill one of them, they'll stay dead until New Game+.

Don't "Use" Fire Keeper Souls. Take them to the mute girl underneath Firelink Shine. They're very valuable.

    Resistance is a near-useless stat.

First of all I have been following this sight for years.  I have gone on to steam many times wanting to play this game, but the steam add that says best played with controller all ways turns me off.  Actually controllers turn me off period, I find them rather limiting.

So let my first post read this.  Thank you Mkillbride and spookydom, for the advice on mods I may actually get to play this game. If you can recommend any other mods, key binding is one of my least favorite limitations on ported games, to make this game perform better on a pc that would be greatly appreciated.

And let it be known that this is what forums are best used for, not flame fests.

    Thanks again.

edit:  I actually made an account just to say thanks...

    pc or console?

if it's pc then either play with a controller or go to dark souls nexus and download the mouse fix.

It's a great game but honestly, if you have problems dying over and over or have limited patience or need to have the way "pointed" all the time then you will have issues with this game.

I'm not clear on how to do this but you can invite other players to your world or join other players in their world to help with bosses (perhaps pvp?) etc.

There's a high-res UI mod on DS Nexus and a mod that changes all controller button tips (like "Press the A button to open this door") to default PC buttons. Of course, they may be even more confusing than the vanilla tips if you're not using the defaults. DSFix and DS Mouse Fix are the only mods you must install to have a comfortable PC experience, however.

As for the mods that aren't related to the UI, I'd recommend the LCD texture pack to get rid of the blurriest textures.

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/81897/what-are-the-equivalent-pc-keyboard-keys-and-mouse-buttons-of-the-xbox-360-game   I found this very useful, once you get used to where the keys are it plays really well, it's just not intuitive to start.

I'm also interested in a different game at the moment and this one sounds interesting, but I'd like to hear some of your coop experiences with it.

Thanks Scalpless, I'm downloading it now, and also checking DSnexus now.

Dark Souls is one of the best action RPGs I have ever played.

Unfortunately, I have not played Demons Souls, because I am a PC gamer.  Maybe in future I pick up a cheap second hand PS3 and the game, but I doubt that will even happen.

Do not hesitate on buying it.

However, be aware that you absolutely require dsfix if you are accustomed to higher than 720p resolution and 60FPS, which is most real PC gamers/enthusiasts. (Note: The game requires strong single core CPU power)

Use a gamepad.  Don't argue, just use one.  Yes, you can use KB&M, and if you do then you need DSMfix, but the way it was designed for a gamepad is unlike any other game I've ever played.  You use the shoulder buttons to do all your actions and it flows wonderfully.  If you use KB&M, you need 4 dedicated buttons, and mice only really have 2.  I personally use my PS2 controller with x360ce.  I cannot fathom how it's possible to effectively play with KB&M.

Lastly: Mods.  Mods mods mods.  One of the essential mods is the high-resolution font.  Check the Dark Souls Nexus for it, along with something like the black keyboard controls mod if you go the KB&M route.

It's also not as hard as people make it out to be. Once you learn how to play, you'll understand.

Enjoy your time; I did and still am.  I have 200 hours counted across my characters and I'm still playing, and I've only co-op'd once!

There's no traditional co-op. You can summon other players to help you, but usually people just summon others to help with a boss. There's no chat. To summon a players to help you, you must become human (you're normally undead) and that opens you up for "invasions", aka PvP.

It's an interesting and unusual system, but if you're looking for a game to play with friends, I'd suggest something else.

I'm playing Dark Souls right now on my PS3.  Yeah, the game is hard.  Not the hardest game i'm every played, but its still very difficult.  Its FUN.  Really fun.

I just think the RNG on drops is kind of silly and for a single player game.  But thats my only pet peeve.  That, and, unless you read a guide or play the game completely, you won't know wtf to do in a lot of instances.

  • red_cruiserred_cruiser Member UncommonPosts: 486
The game is a lot of fun.  It's not hard, so much as punishing.  You shouldn't really die that much once you figure out how things work out.  There are a few tough boss fights; and Sen's Fortress will take some time and patience to learn.
