The land mass question

adderVXIadderVXI Member UncommonPosts: 727

I  played DF for quite a while and really enjoyed it, all I wanted was a logical day and night cycle and enviro sounds.  Oddly other than that I was pretty happy just out in the middle of no where mining etc.

My question is, how reduced is the land mass now?  I hear its shrunk down to the point where there is no place to hide.  Is this true?

It's much smaller now but since everyone is in the safezone for god knows what reason you can pretty much go ANYWHERE without meeting players.

Also, chaos bind stones now all have banks making it a great place to bind and mine. People generally don't fight near chaos stones.

Actually the land mass isn't that much smaller, most of the map they cut is actually water tiles. I used to have a good overlap image showing this, but all I could find is this http://i.imgur.com/cNElB.jpg. darkfall may still have the biggest seamless non randomly generated world in any game.

And one of the things I hear people constantly complaining about is how they cant go anywhere without being killed. My server at least is very populated during prime, you always bump into people out in the world. it was only like this in darkfall 1 when both US and EU was on the same server.

edit: I would also add even the oceans you cannot go unhindered in. fishing is maybe the best source of gold atm via treasuremaps, I have lost 3 ships today and yesterday to dirty pirates while fishing in the middle of nowhere in the ocean.

To be fair to DarkFall - the land mass size is one of the better features of game.

DF:UW is smaller than the original DarkFall... I haven't seen an official size percentage difference, but on the forums; most seem to agree on between 10-25% smaller.

For some fun reading here are some links with comparisons between different MMOs and their land mass size.

shit articles. nightfall is made of of lots of small zones, which in turn are instances. i'm guessing alot of those other "worlds" are too.

its hard to compare but i think it would take longer to traverse on foot the whole continent in darkfall than in any mmo i've played, with the obvious exception of eve.  before darkfal i would have given the nod to EQ1 in its early stages before plane of knowledge.  i remember being a shaman and having to run a marathon to the boonies whenever i had to buy my next pet spell.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Hahaha, you are quite hilarious. Why do you even try to compare something when you have played only one MMO? What about EVE Online ? Which is in all aspect better than any Dfo. Dfo isn't even a true sandbox.

I've played both DF and EQ but i've also played Vanguard and Vanguard wins hands down imo. DF is big but it's not as big as Vanguard.

And if we really want to go large then D&L trumped them all with 15.000sq feet but it's a dead game now.

Within the next couple of  years this game will trump all MMO for land mass http://www.mmoculture.com/2012/12/project-s-changyou-teases-its-own-sandbox-mmorpg/

    Do the math 100.000 x 24 = ?

Within the next year it will be my name sake with 40.000sq feet. http://www.mmoculture.com/?s=savage+horizon

The land mass itself is a bit smaller yes, the water area is the part that got cut down the most.

Either way there seems to be less places to hide at the moment because its basically still the first month so qutie a few people are still playing.

If you where happy in the middle of no where mining because no one bothered you.. dont worry you can now do that all day long in the safe zones and craft as much as you want without having to worry about someone raiding your player city.

Gathering and crafting had been turned into carebear mode..

In short, no.  DF is still a very large world for MMO standards and there is still plenty of space between spawns.  I think they made it way better by getting rid of some of the dead zones.  But there are still dead zones and plenty of cool stuff to find if you look.

Eve is more sandbox to darkfall but less to other games like haven. and I would say eve isn't even a real computer game its more like a text based game, and its not exactly hard for it to win biggest world if since its set in mostly empty space.

There are a variety of perspectives in those links... which is why I tried to include articles and forum banter from different sources.

I didn't try to influence anyone on which ones were more "accurate" than others.  I figure players are smart enough to do a bit of logical thinking on their own and don't need to be spoon-fed the "correct" answer.

I like the topic of discussion and figured that the OP wouldn't mind seeing a plethora of links that discuss similar topics.  From his comment... I think he agreed.  image

He is correct. It is not ALL that smaller. There are lots of places to hide, just not as many as before with the variety of differing land scapes.

I actually have been waiting for this game for quite a while.  Unlike most people I loved D&L!  The size, the deep snow, climbing mountains!  Reading about Savage Horizon lately makes me wonder if its going to be much like D&L.  I hope so but who knows...

One thing about D&L, it was 15,000 sq miles and Savage Horizon is saying this - " The game is apparently over 40,000 square kilometers, 40 times the size of World of Warcraft."

The new map is far worse than the old map.

What the hell were the developers thinking?

Imagine all that wasted time and money that was pumped into making a smaller, more inferior world.

It's totally unbelievable really. For Heaven's sake, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
