[Preview] EVE Online: Peeking Into the Crystal Ball

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

During last week's FanFest, CCP spent a lot of time talking about the next ten years for EVE Online and what players might expect to see. These folks do not lack for ideas as you'll see in our peek into the crystal ball. Let us know what you think of the plans in the comments.

Since its launch on May 6th 2003, EVE Online has carved a niche for itself in the MMO world with a unique mix of intricacy, difficulty, and a metagame full of political inrigue. Now, on the cusp of its 10th anniversary, it seems as if parent company CCP is just beginning to scratch the surface of what they wish to accomplish with their flagship series. This year’s CCP Fan Fest, an annual celebration of all things EVE that the company holds in their hometown of Reykjavik, Iceland took a moment to reflect upon the accomplishments of the first 10 years of EVE Online’s existence, but didn’t pause there too long. This was really about the next decade and what we can expect from the ambitious series. There’s a lot to go over here, but I’ve broken down into three categories that I think best encompass the concepts, ideas and actual changes to the game itself that were represented during Fan Fest.

Didn't hear anything about the inflight control system either...what is that supposed to mean?

I can imagine miniature instances spawned for fleet fights that let small vessels like combat fighters go at it, where the result affects larger vessel fleet fights...ala Dust 514 concept.

    Hello,

I like all of this in the preview, what I do not like is the word "decade", I can´t wait that long for all of this to arrive.

    Cheers

And, soon to come, more shady activities by CCP and it's developers in game! ;)

Can't say enoguh how much I love that CCP keeps putting resources back into this game. They may not always make the brightest decisions but they do stand out as a company that has increased the resources spent on their mmo after launch, as opposed to so many who ship a cash grab and then cut or move employees from the game.

except that's just a fun tech demo and is not going to be ever implemented in EvE.

EDIT: sources for it not being implemented. 1 2

Also, Blake Morse writes, "20 ships will be getting rebalances of their own and all ships will be getting a new inflight control system" in reference to "the next big upgrade to EVE Online" (ie Odyssey).

So, was Blake refering to the Oculus demo when mentioning the inflight control system? Does Blake mean "in cockpit" flight control system? If so, then this system will not be out with Odyssey.

    Troll much?

Really like the new radial menus.  I really disliked having to wend my way thru the old cascading menus.

I am looking forward to the expansion in June.

It refers to the new radial menu, they wont be changing the way you move in space (and im gonna go out on a limb here and say) ever.

If that is the plan for EVE for the next 10 years, then it will be a pretty boring decade.
