LF Gaming PC builds: 1000$ budget

MrTugglesMrTuggles Member UncommonPosts: 188

So it has been about 4 years since my last PC build, and while it has given me a lot of good hours, she is getting old and run down.

I am looking to build a new gaming PC, but have not been keeping up with current hardware, etc, so I've come here to see if anyone would be kind enough to give me a build or two. My budget is around $1000, give or take (would rather be under than over).

Essentially all I am wanting it to do is run 2 Eve clients with decent graphics, and up to 3 clients of Wakfu (Eve and Wakfu clients not up at the same time). I would also like the machine to be able to be slightly updated as needed to keep it up and running for a few years.

SSD would be nice as I have plenty of spare hard drives laying around for storage, bluray would be nice but not needed. I would like it to be decently cooled as well. I always seem to run into problems with my PC ending up needing to have a desk fan up inside to keep everything cool (GPU overheats and shuts computer off otherwise).

That about sums it up. I greatly appreciate any help with this. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and surge protector that you plan on re-using, or do you need those new, too?  Are you planning on reusing a hard drive from the old computer, or do you want a new one?  If the former, then how old is the hard drive?

Are you sure that you want a Blu-Ray drive?  It adds about $20-$25 to the price tag while offering no benefits to most people.  If you're going to watch Blu-Ray movies on your computer, then sure, get one.  But don't buy one thinking it's for futureproofing purposes.  Outside of PlayStations, they're still fairly rare.  With optical drives becoming less important, I don't think Blu-Ray will ever be a universal standard like DVD is today.

I just need the computer, everything else I have. The hard drives I currently have are less than a year old as I had to replace one not too long ago. Using a 42" LED tv as a monitor also. The Bluray isn't a huge deal as a I said, but if it is that cheap it would be nice to have since I do plan on having the computer hooked up through a tv as a monitor.

edit: Will be using the old hard drives, but would like an SSD if it can fit into the budget.

What hardware do you have now? There are some 4+ year old machines that would have no trouble running a pair of Eve clients along with Wakfu (which isn't that intensive of a game). It could just be your current machine just needs a booster shot and it'd be ok for what you are trying to accomplish, or at worst to make sure your budget is going to getting a new computer that will at least be meaningfully faster such as to justify the price.

    Also - about the Blu-Ray:

Just having the drive alone won't let you play Blu-Ray movies; you need software as well - either shucking out an additional $50-$100 for CyberLink PowerDVD or ArcSoft TotalMedia, going through the inordinately finicky process of trying to set up XBMC to do it for free, or going through the legal gray area and massive disk space sink of ripping your BluRays and watching them as digital files on your computer.

Windows will not natively play BluRay discs. I don't think it will do it even with Media Center, but I can't confirm that.

Total:  $889, including shipping and before $25 in rebates.

The memory is on a shell shocker deal right now, so it will probably go up by $14 within hours.  There's also a $20 off promo code on Windows 8 right now, but that ends tomorrow.  Normally I'd say to get whichever you prefer of Windows 7 or 8, but if 8 is $20 cheaper, that's what I'd get.

Recently when looking for a blu-ray drive, I found many had no software included to actually play a blu-ray movie, but Im sure with a decent build,(like the one from Quiz), you should have enough left in your budget to afford some good blu ray software.

I don't know much about that, so I won't recomend any. perhaps someone can offer a good suggestion/clarification .

Considering the PS3 is 7-8 years old I would wait for the PS4 if I were going that route. Should release holiday of this year

I am not a console person at all, so the Ps3 would just be for the blueray, and MAYBE playing Dust514.
