Can we download the client anywhere ?

Decided to resub today but the problem is I dont have my original game disc, I have the serial and reg info but the disc died in action due to my dvd drive breaking down and scratching the disc *Don't ask me how I don't know*

I've looked around and the only place that has anything are torrent sites which I'm not comfortable with, Plus they only have the US version of the disc which I presume wouldn't work with an EU account.

Is there anywhere we can download an official client or are square enix still living in the dark ages ?

This game is still in Beta so you will have to wait. Or get into the beta.

  • So the standard FFXIV is no longer available to play ?

If that's the case then Square Enix need to take a step back, Why make the standard game unplayable because your Beta testing a future update ? :-/

They said they would keep it up and running if there was enough interest but there wasn't so they took it down so they could concentrate on revamping it.

Keeping a game up and running still takes money and if there isn't enough money coming in then it's bad business to keep it going. Especially if they already had the "bad business" to release a game that had issues.

They are trying to do "right". Whether or not you like their new game is another thing.

Because it is not an update.

It is not using the same engine, the same developer tools, they can't upload it on existing servers, you can't download some patch that has ARR in it.

It is an entirely new client, completely incompatable with the old one.  They had to spend months transferring our character data into the new system.  They did bring the game back for a short while with no progress saved, but playing an MMO with no progress saved is not really that enticing to most people.

So it is just not worth their time to keep the servers up, they kinda need all hands on deck for the immensely more popular beta.

I applaud them for trying this.

They are completely redoing the game , admitting their mistake , instead of going the route a certain other major flop of an EA/Bioware game did and blaming the players , the engine , anything but themselves , and sticking with it as is.

I would much rather a publisher do this , they've been very open about their mistakes , a nice change from the usual PR spin devs give these days.

Dicehunter - Since you own the original game, you'll be able to get into the beta starting at Phase 3.  That should take place early in May if they're still on course according to their beta roadmap.

And you'll be able to download the new version for free once it's released.
