Open World PvP - Should explain what you may be looking for.

No objective-based non-instanced PVP, just standard PVP servers/etc. for launch. They've mentioned possibly adding some objective-based stuff post-launch, but nothing firm. Otherwise, there are instanced battlegrounds/scenarios, arenas, and warplots (guild vs guild bases that are built by the guild in the housing system).

If I understand corectly....there is no taking or holding territory...say for days...or weeks ?

    Right ?

  • GoldenTiger2GoldenTiger2 Member UncommonPosts: 39
That's correct, no RVR-style gameplay at launch :(, possibly post-launch but... you know how that goes.

Thanks for the link... bummer though... because that style of PvP never works.. those types of servers are always the first ones to close since it's just not fun for the majority of the players.

Game looks somewhat interesting for the rest.. might give it a shot when it releases, but I already know now that I'll get bored with it after the first month. PvE focussed games usually have that effect on me. I need my PvP fix and instanced timed PvP mini games just don't do it for me.

When did open world PVP not work?

Random ganking/griefing of lowbies as your primary non-instanced pvp content pretty much never works, actually.

loosely related example: in WoW, the least 'pvp' mmo out there, I have seen level 19 twinks employ (pay) high-level characters to guard them, from both mobs (levels 29 thru upper 40s) and other players as they competed in the FISHING TOURNAMENT.

why? they didn't want to die. It' ruin their shot at fishing the big prize.

it's amazing how dynamic the game gets when you don't want to die. lowbie ganking quickly becomes a skirmish. all you need to do is inspire death adversion...aka install a death penalty.

If it works so well, why is Open World PvP in WoW dead then?! Darkness Falls = dead, RIFT PvP servers = dead, DAoC Mordred = dead, ...

You should look up DAoC NF and see how it should be done.

    Exactly.

And, LOL @ comparing a level 5 to an 80 and saying that's PVP. That's like putting a level 5 in a 40-man raid boss encounter alone and saying he's raiding. Completely meaningless and pointless. RVR for the win, or at least even-level players where skill is the difference, not "he can't even technically hit the guy, BUT WE'RE PVP'ING!!" Oh wait a second... :P .

I don't know, maybe because DAOC is almost 12 years old now and kind of outdated interface/controls-wise? I WONDER.... /sarcasm.

I was refering to DAoC Mordred, which is/was the PvP server.. which has finally (this month) been archived and everybody with toons on there have been given the option to xfer to a normal RvR server. (but it has been dead for quite some time now) Ywain (the normal RvR game mode) is still up and running fine.

Ahh, yeah, was gonna say.... I knew Ywain was still doing OK (hence I assumed it was meant that the game as a whole wasn't doing well, which I could understand someone saying). Sorry for the misunderstanding.

World PVP mainly fails because developers stop supporting it and focus on battlegrounds and other shit. Games that are based on open world PVP like Dayz or EVE Online don't fail, that is what these games are about. What usually happens with level based MMOs is the world becomes top heavy, lower level zones are empty and there is no world PVP because the developers provided no reason to do so.

I just wish they got rid of levels, games like Dayz are so much more fun having lots of risk and punishment, to where getting high end loot is risky and not permanent.

World pvp fails when developers don't design the world with wpvp in mind.

There is no wpvp in a game when players are unattackable in half of the zones, when most of the areas/quests aren't designed with factions constantly sharing the same quest areas, when there is no quest/resource competition/when players don't even leave their city.

All the above together have become the standard of mmorpg's after WoW and until all of those together are fixed there won't be world pvp in a game whatever gets implemented in it. This era of big mmorpg's are designed around 0 player punishment.

If you want to do wpvp play DayZ which is entirely designed around wpvp. Don't expect it from WildStar.
