WildStar: Server Information Revealed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Those with a technological bent will definitely want to head over to the WildStar site to check out the latest developer blog. In this week's edition, the team reveals the mysteries of the servers that the game will utilize and much, much more.

Our server architecture is currently made up of 11 daemons running across several server machines.  For some of our daemons, there’s only one per region (i.e. country), where others there are dozens, or maybe even hundreds, per realm.

When you connect to play our game you first connect to our “Auth Daemon” (auth is short for authentication), this is the process that accepts your username and password and decides if you’re allowed to play.  Authentication information is always kept secure, even in our databases.  Once the daemon has decided that you’re allowed to play, it fetches your security permissions.  Based on your permissions it will present you with a list of realms you are allowed to play on.  Once you select a realm, you will be handed off to other sets of daemons, and the Auth Daemon is fundamentally “done” with you.

My head hurt's after reading that.. However I will see that was something no other developer has cared to do, so for that I give them a A+.  Now if they would just tell us a little more about their game engine! :)

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

So without further digging into the fancy words, phrases and missleading terminology, YES they will use the instancing system, common in all the latest releases of MMO's.

    In short:

A game "world" is comprised of a number of computers called servers, these servers run programs that facilitate various needed processes to make the game and game world function.

This is the real heart of an MMO. He mentions SQL Server which is a database engine designed to store, retrieve and manage vast chunks of data. Millions of players playing tens of thousands of hours generates tremendous amounts of data. SQL Server is the software responsible for making sure this performs well. Every time you change a talent, earn a skill point, loot an items, or gain XP, the game will talk to the SQL Server database to make sure that this is recorded and saved away safely.

Part of his discussion was basically saying that they designed their system in such a way that they can bring more servers online to provide more compuing power to any daemons that may be struggling to perform at an acceptable level.

    Hope that helps.

    1. Auth - if passes it checks the database for what then account is entitled to play

    2. Shard selection (one world server design games like TSW or Defiance do this dynamically, Defiance has no shards, TSW only uses a shard concept as a starting point for a character)

    3. Load player data from DB, initiate client game server connection

Its pretty strange that they would announce something that's been since the earliest online games.

    From the post:

"A post was pointed out to me over on Wildstar-Central today with user “Mizpah” asking about how MMO servers work."

So he gave a broad high-level answer. Pretty sure he's not claiming it's a new paradigm.

People like to read this stuff for the same reason they watch Discovery Channel shows about building Megastructures. They're never going to build one, but it's interesting to hear about how other people have.

"the team reveals the mysteries of the servers"

Well I thought they would present some new server architecture.

But it is the same, same as always. Same architecture that has been used for a long time.

Would love to see more specific information.

Sure for the people that has no clue how a game server operates that is more then enough :)

I don't think he was being serious, but that's just me being Captain Obvious.

Feel the same way; really looking forward to this game. These kind of posts are like fillers. Show us the other races, or let us see the ptp/ftp/btp model ... SOMETHING the community is asking for.

I thought they were going to explain the server rulesets hehe.

Oh well, it was mind expanding to learn how mmo server architecture works. From my perspective as a layperson :)
