[Interview] Age of Wushu: Launch Interview

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Snail Games' Age of Wushu has finally hit retail release after a productive beta that yielded a lot of helpful suggestions subsequently implemented by the team. We spoke with Project Lead Hao Han about Age of Wushu. Check it out before discussing your experiences in the comments.

MMORPG.com: What are some of the lessons learned in Beta that you were able to implement at launch?

Hao Han: During the closed beta period, we learned to continuously adjust skills in-game, and redefine the values of variant Kung Fu. Since Age of Wushu involves many different skills and no strict character levels, we can only conclude the power of skills via player experiences. In this way, we have learned quite a lot about all the skills involved. Of course, we have also identified and fixed many bugs and modified inappropriate game rules.

"I believe Jianghu Relations and Wushu Skills best capture the Wuxia Culture. We did not pre-set any alliances in the game, so animosity between players is naturally created through gameplay."

Spot on. This is what the game is at it's core. This is what pvprs have been missing.

Eroupe is playing Wushu now. Wulin has become an after thought to most it seems.

not true theres an russian version that you can translate to english it have more EU players playing there and waiting for EU release

and why they still saying the game have no levels?

levels are everywhere ( internal level, skill levels, proffesions and other things)

Did they make the combat not so clunky? and make killing npcs worth it? or is it still just the same boring as hell do your dailys stuff its always been?

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

if you didn't care for it in beta you won't like it now.. game itself hasn't really changed as a whole

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Classic post. The funny thing is, he's not even trying.

I've been playing the hell out of this game since the start of closed beta 2 and still have a blast with it to this day. However, everytime I see them say "level-less" system I want to start making it rain bullshit flags. A tomato called a fish is still a tomato.

I see flags too :p Now that the Meridian sysytem is in, I understand what they are saying. There's a big difference from a max internal guy, and a guy with max internal and chi all over the place.

I've played it on and off for the last few weeks and while there are elements that interest me, overall the game ends out pretty flat.

Combat animation is great... combat isn't

Graphics aren't bad at all but they aren't great.

The auto pathing is one of the worst I have ever played in a game ever. It needs to be designed by someone who knows how to dev.

Quests seem daily to me. I've done the same 'kill 5 crimials' quest over and over throughout the last couple weeks. It makes you feel like what is the point.

I'm pretty sure the game just isn't for me. It is really too bad, but the game is just boring. It feels very very grindy.

Kind of a let down because there are quite a few elements in the game that are really good. Lot's of good ideas that just are not implemented correctly.

Anyways, that is my 2 cents.

You played it wrong, those auto path quests are optional, and gives very little reward. It's so frustrating to see so many players just don't get it. Maybe AOW was just designed for elite gamer.

Here's a tip: avoid this term. You end up sounding like a huge douchecanoe. Also throws up a red flag for anyone thinking about playing to avoid it. Also, HUGE DOUCHECANOE. I hear it has the full support of Jet Li, and that matters!

Edit: Been playing the same 2 MUDs for 15 years, so I like grind.

It's not about my attitude right or wrong, it's about you play it right or wrong. Obviously you wasted a few weeks of your time playing it wrong. Unlike other players who are spending time to study the game, asking questions on the forum, digging deeper into the game, you just clicking auto path doing those optional quests that no one bothers to do.  Be lazy or be active, you choose your attitude, I just hope you don't come here spread false information.

My apology, I take back that silly 'elite gamer' comment. The bottom line is AOW is not for everyone, it takes time and effort in order to fully enjoy it.

are the rest of u not getting terrible lag and skills that waot 4 seconds before firing. Essentially iys a pvp game and I lovee that also very very in depth... so many skillsets combos and moves to master ingame. Item shop is horribad the pve element is an afterthough really and terrible latency makes the game for the most part unplayable.

    false informations?

its true the game is getting bored after some time

its based on daily things and the PVE part is lacking terribly

you do the same thing every day and if you do all of these main events then you have free time to go farm plats or whatever your profession is or just gank lowbies

theres nothing to do when you get all your flying skills and reach max level just do events and kill lowbies, yea sure you can repeat these boring instances (just rush in, gather all the mobs and aoe crap of them)

i probably should evade the term "max level" becouse how the devs says game have no levels :P

The latency issue is because about 70% or greater of the people who play AoW are over seas. I started playing during CB2 and really enjoyed the game while I was figuring everything out. Once I got into the open world pvp scene actively and realised how bad the latency issues where. Game is littered with koreans who have played the game for years over seas and just came to the US one so they could grind all the instances and get all the best gear before everyone else did and then sell the ebst gear at a rediculous price and pretty much jacked the economy up from the beginning. I have a really good friend in game who is in russia and played the chinese version and said the prices on items in game are WAY higher then what they are on the CN server.

Over all its a very fun game! I love my Monk!

I have something I do everyday and it is more or less the same all the time: it's called: a job. I don't need another. And LOL at "you're playing it wrong." If people "can't figure it out", your game design sucks. People had no problem figuring out EvE and SWG and those were greatly lacking explanations at the beginning as well.

Did they ever add an invert mouse feature, as each time i tried it the camera would drive me nuts as i move my mouse nad it shoots off the wrong direction, got dizzy and disorintated, so used to having the mouse work the other way.

So till they add that i dont think im gonna look at the game again, which is pity as does interest me.

Game is great. You'll either love it or hate it. Yes a lot of people are crying at the first hurdle; learning takes some time and patience. The game isnt about any daily quests and the like. It's pvpcentric and money making. Sink or swim! No hand holding in this mmo, no stupid "op" pay2win cash shop either. Few issues but its just began for the NA release. Patience. In all a good game!

This game is a definite love or hate type of game... there isn't any middle ground.  I personally  enjoy the change of pace from what most western gamers are used to.  Definitely no hand holding and it might just be too complicated for some to find enjoyable.  I played the beta and thought it was okay but was completely sold after I got some of my friends to join up with me during launch.

What sold me was the escort mission...  we had six of us escorting a caravan when a clan of 10 - 15 tried to gank us right at the city gates.  We kept the caravan safe from point A to point B while being outnumbered.  We returned to the city to see that the same clan was trying to escort their own caravans.  We took down three caravans before they left the city gates until their clan leader bowed down to our pvp skills.  Another clan even decided to come help them and we took them down over and over again until my infamy got so high, that when I finally died, I was thrown in jail for a couple hours... most fun I have had in a long time as far as pvp is concerned.

On a side note,  economy is kinda crazy compared to the beta server at the moment as far as prices are concerned.  It  is only temporary since the servers have just come up and some players have no idea what's going on (very noticeable) It will balance itself out in due time once people start realizing how the various systems implemented work and the economy gets going.  Classic law of supply and demand...
