I haven't seen any official word yet on how well it's selling so I'm not sure, but it IS selling well on Steam...been on the top sellers list (currently #5) since release. This makes me think it must be doing pretty well. It's also decently high on the Twitch streams list (usually page 1 or 2) meaning good # of streamers / viewers.

Trion isn't a publically traded company, they have no obligation to release numbers publically and with their prior game (Rift) never have -- at least not in any meaningful sense. Unless, for some reason, their deal with SyFy requires that information be released -- and I can't think of any reason that would be the case -- I wouldn't expect anything more than a few carefully worded claims about how many unique accounts the Defiance site has, or some such silliness, that will then be religiously repeated as boxes sold by fans everywhere.
In the end it really doesn't matter that much. People like Trion, for whatever reason, and will see a success regardless. Look at Rift, 58 US servers at launch, 8 US servers today, yet still declared a raging success and model of a good game launch by many of the same people who slag games that have done similarly in that timespan as utter failures.
Mind, I liked Rift, and played it from the first Betas through nine months after release. I'm not trying to slag the game, or Trion, I just find the kind of fantasy that has grown up around it to be quite odd. Perception is all in this game, sad to say, actual numbers are mostly just fodder for the tinfoil hat crowd.
Comcast(NBC/SyFy)+Trion = deep pockets when it comes to marketing potential
Finally I find it just fun to play.
USA channel has been advertising it alot to..uhh the female that is always with nolan (Irisa Nyira) and one of the big blue guys was in a commercial with the main char (Shawn) was pretty funny
Financially Rift was a huge success, the game cost around $50mil to develop and sold more than $100mil in the first month.
Defiance cost around $50 mil according to reports from Syfy, and Comcast may have covered half of that cost, which would mean Trion only spent $25 mil out of pocket.
I wouldn't be surprised if Trion made back all the Dev cost in presales alone.
That $100m was in the first year, and it was revenue not profit and has been in a state of decline since.
The game is booming on the 360, constantly 80+ playerrs at any arkfall. Co-ops take seconds to pop etc.
I can only imagine its more so on the PC. If you go into it looking for EVE online or WoW, look elsewhere.
If you go into it looking for Gears of war with thousands of other players, ull be in for quite a treat.
Yup, Defiance is not 3-D chess.
If you like shooting things, blowing them up, setting them on fire, electrocuting them or killing them in a number of other visually entertaining ways with a wide array of weapon types, then you'll have fun in Defiance.
Will it last longer than 2 months ? Who knows ? And who really cares ? I've already had my money's worth, because I've had as many hours out of it as I usually get out of similarly-priced single-player games. And I'm still having fun, so another month or two will be a pure bonus !
Its been a top seller on steam since like two weeks before the game launched. Not sure wha that really means though numerically. Also a lot of people, like me, purchased on steam but play though trion, so im not sure if that changes the number.
i dont think we have any way to see how many xbox and PS3 player bought the game either.
Originally posted by Isturi I think Defiance has been more sucessfull then what people want to give credit for.
Not at all. Sure, there have been a number of luke-warm reviews, but it's still up there on the Steam bestsellers list and its appeal is pretty wide so I see it doing well for several months. I plan on getting it too, just not yet. The only possible problem I see is "serial gamers", people like my friend who just buy the new hot titles off Steam, etc. and play them for a few weeks at most, then it's on to the next eye candy.
It's got plenty of players, but I do worry for the longevity of it. I mean, a buddy and I burned through the main quest and all side quests in a few days. All that's left now is PvP and trying to get gold in races. It was really fun while it lasted and I definitely got my $60 worth of enjoyment, but I don't expect there to be many long-time players.

20 years ago, I would have been the same way. But these days, I got to school full time, work full time, and have a wife and two kids.
I started at 6pm on April 1st when the servers truely went live, and I just finished the final boss of the main mission today, have silvers in about half the races, a gold in a couple, and I think I finished most or all of the side quest in Tam tonigh, so I still have quite a ways to go with side quest to run out of stuff.
For as little time as I have to play, I have been playing hard too.

Trion never released full financial info on rift so anyone quoting figures is pulling it out of their rear. You, me and everyone else here has no idea at all.
Now going by those charts means your $100m in a year is way off indeed sorry to say when you also include monthly subs on top of the amount of box sales

It is probably as successful as APB when it firstr launched I think (maybe doing a bit better than APB).
While not exactly the same type of game/crowd Defiance is close to being PvE version APB (but with more sci-fi and less crime oriented).
I'd imagine it probably stole a good portion of APB crowd. I personally know a few who have switched and not played APB since Defiance came out.

Not sure how reliable this information is, just found it using Google, I know VGcharts has been around a long time.
As of April 6..., that is almost a week ago, and only a few days after the intial release...
Copies sold...
PC 50,000
PS3 70,000
Xbox360 170,000
Not so nice guy!

Just hit Ego of like 470.
Not so nice guy!
So essentially a shallow TPSMMORPG, got it!
I had to go to 4 stores to find a 360 copy which is a first for me. Best Buy was even sold out of the PS3 copies and there was only one PC copy left.
I think, above all else, 360 players just really wanted their first MMO for the system.

Oh I did find this on vgcharts

Don't know about platforms other than PC though.
OK but this is not 2011.
If you read what someone else said then you would see my response was to answer and to correct them
Good idea to read before replying then you would know why I posted this
OK but this is ilrealivent. This is a thread about Defience not Rift? Not sure how it applies?
LOL np I was just wondering why we were talking rift?? But anyways TY for the responce.
